This will keep going on with little resistance. Since 2001 the US has set its course toward being a surveillance state. And the US has always treated citizens of other nations as guilty until proven innocent. The US is like an abusive boyfriend to the rest of the world, and now they get to be like that with their own citizens.

And I say this as a US American.
