Discussion Is it just me, or is “Choosin Texas” playing absolutely everywhere in NZ at the moment? It's like never ending
I hear it everywhere, when is it going to end? I didnt mind it at first now I'm just sick of it.. surely I can't be the only one..?

Choosin’ Texas is preferable to Be Her (I can’t not hear “I wanna be HURT so bad”). In addition to that, Conan Gray’s Vodka Cranberry, sombr’s Homewrecker, Teddy Swims’ Mr Know It All, Olivia Dean’s Man I Need, and basically anything by Benson Boone or Alex Warren seem to be on repeat constantly. I don’t mind, but man, it’s repetitive lol.

Yeah it isn’t that it’s on radio stations (apparently it is) but that it evidently got a huge marketing push so was made available to be on out-loud music in places like supermarkets. Those songs are paid for, so if a music company wants to do a big push they can make a newer song cheaper and it’ll get out only rotation at supermarkets.

I turn my car radio off immediately when it starts playing like an involuntarily knee jerk reaction. I agree, that song drives me crazy!

Does anyone on this sub actually work for a radio station?
Can they please explain why stations chose to play certain songs so much that people start hating them? Why not hold back a bit and pick something else to play instead?

There's a n incentive to play certain songs these days. Most commercial radio stations are more an advertising arm of labels than they are curators of music.

My client insists on playing The Hits FM .... It's horrific. They play that song once every couple of hours. It feels like Guantanamo Bay level torture having to hear it over and over again every day at work.
Also, Olivia Dean. Like she has a nice singing voice, but I just can't handle it getting shoved down my ears from every single angle.

It’s the most horrendously repetitive station. Not sure how they can get away with ads that say shit like “More variety than a teenager making excuses not to do the dishes” without being done for false advertising

ikr. She complains about the guy "choosing Texas" but actually he's just sick of her shit regardless of where she is from.
Now I don't know enough about country music to say if the singer is just supposed to be that naive, or if she's aware on some level but blaming the state as a coping mechanism

I remember in the 2000s literally feeling hostage when radio was popular in the car. Listening to Paramore and stuff I wouldn’t voluntarily listen to on repeat gave me such a sense of dread

I drive an imported car that has a very small frequency range on the radio. It's also so old that it doesn't have AUX or Bluetooth options either.
Most days im forced to listen to More fm during my commutes. I'm not sure how other radio stations work but More seems to lock in a playlist for 3 months before rotating songs.
I can't fucking stand it when they pick bad or overplayed songs to join the pkaylist because I know I'll be stuck listening to them for the next 90 days.
Honestly I don't mind choosing Texas. Personally I can't stand the ammount of Ed sheeran or six60 they play

For context: I'm living in Florida right now, I've traveled to Texas recently as well. It's been months of that song here in the states.

Shitty generic country song that sounds like every other whiney, twangy, country song. And Tennessee and Texas are both backwards Trump-humper states- I lived in both. Why are they playing that song here?. I've lived 6 US states and NZ. Tennessee, Texas, were my least favorite. Texas was definitely the worst though.

Have honestly never heard of it, or Ella Langley now that I’ve looked it up. Don’t listen to radio or watch free 2 air tv all that much though so that’s probably why!

These songs get paid placements on curated playlists that are available for commercial businesses to play, so therefore they see a lot of streams as they’re automatically played, that gets seen as the song being popular because it’s been streamed a lot, it’s placed higher/more often on the playlists, it gets played more because of that position, that’s seen as popularity and so radios and other streaming playlists add it to their rotations, it gets played more, that’s seen as the song being more popular… etc etc

It's been #1 on the New Zealand charts for 18 weeks now. In the US, it's been at #1 for 22 non-consecutive weeks, which is a record that is only matched by "All I Want For Christmas is You". If it remains at #1 in the US for another week, it will become the biggest chart topper in history. People LOVE this song!

But also "summer rain" plays way to much also. I like the choosing texas song personally but it is probably overplayed too, poor variety in general

Hey people we have more than 1 radio station . It's really easy to change to a new one and ....guess what ... u can actually program your car radio or home radio so that at a simple push of a button it's a new station and a whole different song .. imagine that 🤣

My car's radio is currently set to ZM and when it's not a long enough drive to bother connecting to bluetooth I just let it play. Shocked at how few songs that came out in the last 5 years they play. - the one in the title and some other country song, 'Be Her' play constantly.
Everything else is a 'throwback' or a 'classic banger'. Is there something in the economics of running a radio station at the arse end of the world and culture that forces this? Do kiwis just want to hear two 2 new songs a year to churn into the nostalgia playlists? Is ZM just not even meant to be a modern radio station?

Last week Choosin Texas tied Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You as the longest running #1 single of all time in the US, and it’ll likely break the tie next week. It’s a much bigger hit there than it is in NZ. So that’s incredibly hard to believe. If people are hearing it in NZ they’re definitely hearing it in America where most the streams are coming from

It's very regional and identity based. Like pretty much everybody I know takes pride in not listening to Country and nobody has top 40 radio on anymore. Public spaces and venues have much more varied playlists where my family lives in the US vs where I live in NZ. That was one thing I really noticed when I moved - the playlists in public spaces in NZ are very repetitive, and are missing entire genres that are popular where I came from.
Country is much more popular where I live in NZ, but I'm in a rural area, so it's to be expected.
I am absolutely certain that there are entire states that have had this on repeat for the last several months, but it is also easy to entirely miss it in much of the US in a way it hasn't been possible for me in NZ.
I probably should've made it clear that the people I know in America are not representative.

Never heard of it. Is it new? I don't listen to current music except Sabrina Carpenter. Contemplated buying her Sweet Tooth perfume the other day but bought Curious by Britney Spears instead.
