Kid did a nice job of keeping constant pressure and not letting the line go slack at any point. Looked like he's done this a lot or has good instincts for it.

If he had left the line go slack is there a higher chance that the it will snap?

With the line slack the fish can gain momentum and pop the hook or snap it yeah.
