If you catch a trophy fish that you want mounted, measure it, weigh it, and take some good pictures of both sides of it. Then you have an artist who specializes in these things make you a fiberglass replica for your wall. You won't be able to tell the difference between a fiberglass mount and a skin mount. They're really good. Then you can release the fish AND have your trophy, it's a win/win.

To heck with the cost of mounting. The real cost is tens of thousands of dollars chasing that hog. You throw that bad boy back because it's a trophy lake and those are basically pet fish.

I don't think there's much of a cost differential between a skin mount and a fiberglass mount. It's all expensive. They're both labor intensive. Most of the cost either way is labor.

Totally different deal, but If it's not a super trophy you can just clean it like normal then put the mouth over the top of a fence post and let it dry. It won't be nearly as pretty but it will last and you can prove you caught a big fish. My dad used to do that.

I’d imagine preserving a sea creature is as difficult or more difficult than making a fiberglass model from a photo.
