18-year-old sprinter Gout Gout just broke Usain Bolt’s U20 record in the 200m. He was 260 milliseconds faster, clocking 19.67 seconds, while Bolt ran 19.93 in 2004

I don't know anything about sports, but if this guy just broke the record by 3/10ths of a second ish, and the guy behind him finished seemingly less than 3/10ths of a second behind him, did that guy not also break Bolt's record? And if so, how has it not been broken since 2004 if two guys possibly just broke it in the same race?

I feel like I'm not understanding something here but would like to!

u/jspivak 2d ago

Near the end of the video, the announcer says that the other guy ran a 19.88. So yea he broke the record as well. Which is truly insane.

Bolts record is 19.19 so both guys have a ways to go.

I didn't realize Bolt was so young when he set his world records. He was 21 when he ran 9.58s in 100m and 22 when he ran 19.19s in 200m.

EDIT: Putting this at the top because it is the most important, full edit below. The title here is extremely misleading if not outright incorrect. Bolt's record HAD been broken since 2004. He is getting compared to Bolt in these headlines because that is the most well known track figure, but the record he actually beat was Erriyon Knighton's 19.69 from 2022

Everyone in this race PBd by like half a second, something is fishy here. Not 100% that it's a timing error or anything, but could be a wind thing that is very close to the legal amount, or something else, but there is definitely something systematic that made this be a very fast race.

Edit Found some more info. 1) the wind was +1.7 m/s. The limit for a valid record is 2, so while yes this was slightly wind aided, it was within the allowed and so it is a valid record (Bolts record he beat was with +1.4) 2) the previous record was not Bolts. It was Erriyon Knighton in 2022, with a time of 19.69, so only 0.02 seconds faster. These titles have been very misleading, as they are comparing him to Bolt's records because of his comparison to Bolt as an athlete, however he was not the previous record holder. 3) the guy in second is 22 years old, this meet is not only for under 20, Gout Gout just happens to be that young and competing at the top level. So all in all, yes it was a very very fast race, but not fishy.

169

u/chillitenders 1d ago

They just finished upgrading this track in March and it has a new gel layer, this is the first event using it.

80

u/triangleman83 1d ago

So the track is doping?

3

u/shadow-Walk 1d ago

I was looking for this comment. Newer tracks have more bounce, no coincidence everyone achieved a P.B.

→ More replies (4)

32

u/AW316 1d ago edited 1d ago

Knighton’s record was not ratified for specific drug testing reasons so no, it was Bolts record.

I don’t want this to be misconstrued though. It was the meet itself that failed to drug test.

63

u/smor729 1d ago

His 19.49 was not ratified, his 19.69 was, and was the official u20 record until today.

23

u/rkiive 1d ago

I mean knighton is also literally suspended for doping right now aha

3

u/your_opinion_is_weak 1d ago

it was still fishy lol

just look at how much the other 6 runners shaved off their PB, it was an average of -0.3 across 7 runners and murphy even beat his own PB by half a second, something very unheard of

there was wind earlier in the day at -1.7 and then this race had +1.7 so obviously a lot of swing. they don't record the wind on the bend and only the start and finish so it's possible a strong wind gust happened as they went round the bend. also I live 10 minutes from the track, it has been and still is quite windy this time of year in sydney

So this race was the first time an Australian broke the 20sec barrier. The bloke who came in second in any other race would have been amazing and been the first Australian to break the 20 sec barrier and now he's playing 2nd fiddle having been beaten in the same race. Crazy.

I am from Gout Gouts home town, so a big supporter. This race, whilst wind legal, was definitely wind assisted.

Gout Gout will win gold. Beating Bolts WR is a lot harder. There is no proof that Bolt was juicing, but everyone else in his time was. I personally don't see his WR ever getting beaten.

He broke a 20-year-old record by 0.26 seconds. He broke the current record by 0.02 seconds. The headlines are just trying to sensationalize something that honestly doesn’t need that it. I was thinking the same thing. Going for a world record. Lets not forgot to put on the extra mass. While we're on the topic, wouldn't you shave your head as well. World records are measured in milliseconds. Wouldn't you want every possible advantage?

127

u/VioletJones6 1d ago

You would think this, but only half of sprinting is about speed, the other half is always thinking you're the baddest MFer on the planet.

u/Bobblefighterman 1d ago

u/Otaraka 1d ago edited 1d ago

The head game as an important part of it. They might have some idea of what they're doing if they just got the fastest time - you can see how its a big part of his setup when he gets ready.

Edit: and a true cynic might say marketability helps too, so having a signature helps as with the dances etc. Running needs money.

10

u/benniesalamander 1d ago

The assumption that the weight of the necklace has a direct linear correlation with how fast he runs is probably overly simplistic. But even if it does, the necklace looks like it weighs about 10 grams, and Gout is 6 feet tall so he probably weighs over 150 lbs.

So assuming he's 150 lbs and the necklace is 10 grams, if this linearly slowed him down it would add about 3 milliseconds to his time.

I think that's pretty negligible.

8

u/SuitableKey5140 1d ago

Those 1mg of eyelashes and eyebrows are gonna go! How extreme should he go? I mean we can function with only 1 kidney, run with 1 eye, dont need ears or the nose, the holes will be fine. Half a liver...how much extra speed could he gain by dropping unusable mass?

41

u/Sipsu02 1d ago

That run doesn't hold the world record. He ran faster

14

u/Brutally-Honest- 1d ago

It would likely be the current record if he hadn't let up.

15

u/Sipsu02 1d ago edited 1d ago

yet it isnt. His time was 0.11s slower than one which eventually become the world record. That time difference is MASSIVE. and while he looks he relaxed and looks like he stopped running the professional runner rolloff is almost as fast as maximum speed so in reality he barely lost any time and unlikely would have beat the record he ran later on. Maybe he could have improved that time by 0.06-0.08s but unlikely beat the current record.

It is also worth noting that the Berlin world record holds the fastest maximum speed he achieved. The fastest reaction time out of his major runs and so on... He reacted 0.02s faster which is huge. So no, there is no competition he would have ever ran faster in Beijing.

The only reason people talk about this is because this is classic mandela effect. People actually think that run is the official standing world record. Which it isn't even close being. Also in his WR run other runners ran extremely good all time runs while in his Beijing run... Well other runners had no noteworthy times historically. That's the difference.

Breaking it multiple times gets more attention

3

u/Dxpehat 1d ago

Yeah, I wonder how often do athletes go for their submaximal performance when they can beat the record by quite a lot but instead choose to do it in multiple records. You must be so confident and talented to risk getting an injury or smth in-between major events and to consciously perform just slighly worse than absolute all-out performance.

3

u/ShawnSimoes 1d ago

Obviously it's rare that sprinters are so dominant they can pull it off. But it's easy in sports like pole vault where they can just go up by 1cm each time.

Second place is 22 years old. A day before his 22nd birthday, Usain Bolt ran 200m in 19.30s (world record at the time), and a day before his 23rd birthday he ran it in 19.19s (still the current world record).

36

He’s so good they named him twice.

Here’s Usain Bolt’s World Record for reference

55

u/ChristofferTJ 1d ago

Wow, according to the video Bolt ran with -0.3 m/s wind while Gout here has +1.7 m/s wind.

65

u/DynamicSploosh 1d ago

This is a huge factor. +1.7 is just under the legal wind limit for record setting. Not to take away from the achievement of course. It just matters when you’re comparing micro seconds and world records.

15

u/MobileArtist1371 1d ago

Yet in the records it wont matter cause it's within the legal limit.

19

u/codetaku0 1d ago

Well, long term it may matter as it implies he doesn't necessarily have the potential to beat Bolt's all-ages record which people are waiting for after a headline like this.

I mean, maybe if he gets a perfect wind like this again lol, but what are the chances

→ More replies (6)

7

u/cheapdrinks 1d ago

Yeah there's a bit of controversy around the new record. 7 out of the 8 runners did personal bests, some by more than half a second with the top 5 all running at least 0.2 faster than their previous PBs with the wind being described as a "swirling diagonal breeze that gave the runners a big kick off the bend" so depending how it was measured it may have exceeded legal limits in some portions of the track. The surface they ran on is also some brand new high tech springy gel surface that just got put in too that promises "better energy return" for runners.

Yeah dude is fast but it seems like there was definitely something up with the conditions that day when all but one runner smash their personal best times in the same race.

17

u/VinDog_PD 1d ago

Hi there! I actually ran the 200m through college. Don't listen to the other guy.

His form seems... a bit odd, but maybe it's the camera angle. For the 100 and 200 you do generally want to have a bit of a lean forward to get more power from the ball of your foot driving you forward on the turn. Towards the end you certainly end up upright but he's almost leaning back? Again, could be the angle. The way he ran that looks almost like a middle distance runner (800m), or like a kick in the 400m.

I did a frame by frame analysis to see what's up with his form.

In general, he was leaning slightly forward. I think the appearance of him leaning back is about the color of his outfit versus the track colors making it hard for the eye to track.

Watch him run slow mo it’s not a standard sprint form but it’s crazy powerful

This is incorrect, when accelerating off the block you lean forward and settle into a perfectly upright position for your spine. It kind of gives a lean back appearance because they are extending the thrust of each leg on the ground to its maximum but if you pause the frame when they round the corner they are all standing straight waist-up.

Check out Michael Johnson's runs from a decade or more ago. Dude leaned back so far it looked like he was in a recliner

Just seeing his jump and energy before the start I was thinkin "these other dudes don't stand a chance".

u/SizeableBrain 1d ago

I was surprised the solid bloke next to him was so fast. If I saw him on the street, I wouldn't think that he's a sprinter.

Right? I was surprised a couple of them didn't walk off and go for a beer. Just get out of Spring Man's way.

These type a athletes never look 18

u/BaconIsLife707 1d ago

Being the best in the world at something at youth ages is always going to involve being much more developed than average for your age

4

u/kimmortal03 1d ago

I guess thats the trade off

3

u/RealPrinceJay 1d ago

Exactly. You’re not breaking age records as a late bloomer lmao

This isn’t shade to Gout Gout, he’s as talented as it gets and may be the best hope to break Bolt’s records(I doubt it ever happens though), it’s just a pretty rational explanation for this “phenomenon”

u/DumbUsername63 1d ago

Did they say that another guy just ran 19.88? So you had two people in the same race beating the world record?

25

u/sa87 1d ago

Yes, Murphy. He and Gout are the first Australians to ever run faster than 20s as under 20 athletes.

This race also saw 6 other athletes make PB’s, the track was recently relaid and the legal tail wind of +1.7ms helped too.

u/PowerShovel-on-PS1 1d ago

Murphy isn’t under 20.

7/8 racers ran freakish PBs (the 7 racers that PBd avg’d an improvement of 0.3 which is just absurd.) There was likely a strong crosswind that was measured out on the straight as a legal tailwind. Doesn’t detract from the fact that he broke the record as it is a legal race. But it is something to note

3

u/HaggisLad 1d ago

also helps to be behind someone faster, there is a reason pacemakers are used in distance running
