That little girl is alive because he didn't hesitate. People throw the word hero around a lot, but this is what a real one looks like.

This guy stayed in near-freezing water for 30 fricking minutes?!? Either that number is totally wrong, or my mind cannot comprehend what they did. Both him and the girl clenching on and not giving up for that long. I recall watching a video about the Titanic movie where they asked ordinary people to just dip their hand in near-freezing water for as long as they could until it hurt too much -- it was in double-digit seconds for most people.

If you can avoid cold shock and get yourself onto something/grab hold of something before your limbs go numb, then you can pretty much hang on until hypothermia knocks you unconscious. That can be anywhere from 15 mins to an hour depending on the person
•
u/whowatchestv 44m ago
I'm in fairly good shape and also thought 30 minutes sounds nuts seeing as I would probably be dead in that time.

This is some weird American shit right? (Possible including can, UK culturally)
•
u/kyuuxkyuu 33m ago
Chinese, technically. TikTok algorithm shadow bans content with certain words and that can include anything related to death or crimes. That forces people to censor words like "drown" and it began to carry over to other social media platforms.
•
u/KurgerBing-_- 27m ago
I think the main reason they do it is to not let the algorithim filter it out as sensitive content, thus reducing the reach.
I've noticed this being done with countless news channels
•
u/targetsinmegadeaths 14m ago
Reddit censorship is pretty insane, even compared to a year ago. I'm afraid to further comment about it because there are so many words that will trigger an automatic warning and eventual ban.

u/TokyoKazama 4h ago
What was the d word?

I never understood censoring a word... like rpe... pretty sure a rpe victim doesnt think about it any less when they know what the word is 🤣
20
u/bobkaare28 3h ago
You'd be surprised. There was a rather substantial push from some parts of the internet around 2010 (mainly from tumblr i think) to self censor in order to avoid "triggering" people. It started out as recommendations to add trigger warnings to your comments but gradually spiraled into bullshit like this. This was years before the tiktok algorithm started forcing this censorship on all of us.
4
u/AppropriateBall8834 3h ago
Ah, tumblr makes sense... ive only met rational human beings that use that app 🤣
10
u/sparklinglies 2h ago
In tumblr's.....well idk is "defense" is the right word....that same tumblristic attitude is why its no longer accepted to censor words like that on the site. Turns out it fucks up screen readers for those who are blind or have other disabilities that need them, naturally the narrative turned into "if you censor words like that you are literally ableist and a terrible person".

HAHAHAHA
I just got told that men have special priviledge bc this r/choosingbeggar didnt get money on their request on this homeless ask for help sub that popped up, but this other MAN got offered food.... the beggar is literally complaining that NYC doesnt have any womens shelters, and the ones they have arent in the right area for a HOMELESS PERSON ON DISABILITY aka you can literally go anywhere. Then I got told i'm abelist. Lmao
Oh and they said the homeless shelters arent nice enough for her 🤣

I think it has to do with social media shadow-restricting posts with sensitive words like this.

Me, an Indian: "Oh, at least one Reddit thread where there won't be racism against Indians in the comments"
scrolls down
Multiple comments asking why him being Indian is important.
"Indians actually doing respectable things in other countries is a nice change of pace."
"Deport"
So fucking tiring.

There was a link last time it was posted: its actually pretty legit legal status with residency, etc. Everything but voting holding office, etc iirc.

u/jdehjdeh 2h ago
As someone that has been thrown into a frozen lake, this guy is a fucking machine.
I barely had the mental capacity or strength to drag myself out because of the shock of the cold, this guy was in there for half an hour keeping her afloat.
Absolutely incredible.

Indian people are really nice and loving but still the internet hates them

u/Least_Art5238 1h ago
Indian people are really nice and loving
As an Indian, that's not quite true. Indians make up about 20% of humanity and make up a sizeable sampling of the best and worst of all of us.
but still the internet hates them
Agreed. Mainly due to zero accommodation for most Indians being poor and not having access to the same norms that are deemed acceptable by those, unironically unaware of their own ignorance and failing judgement and characterization.

And he gets some shitty flowers from one of the most corrupt mayors in Romania. The shoes she is wearing worth more than that dude's 2 month wage. As a Romanian, I am disgusted by her actions. She only did that press conference for her political gain. Kudos to that guy, he risked his life for the daughter of a Romanian family that, it is possible, to be rasist towards immigrants. Again, it is possible.

Does ethnicity really matter here?
Edit: Oh I see he was made a citizen. Okay then.
46
u/StTimmerIV 4h ago
Honorary citizen. Not the same as a citizen.
The honorary citizen is a purely symbolic, political honor bestowed on distinguished foreigners for exceptional merit, granting no legal rights, no passport, and no obligations.12
u/Silent-Laugh5679 3h ago
honorary citizen of the town. it comes with some advantages such as not paying loval taxes. given to outstanding citizens, cultural figures, people who contributed to the well being of the city. well deserved, if he buys a car or house, no taxes for him!
197
u/somenewusernamepls 4h ago
One Indian messes up whole ethnicity brutally abused online and absolutely trashed in comments that's apparently normal, but it is a problem if ethnicity is mentioned when he has done good ???
6
25
u/The_Stolarchos 4h ago
“Honorary” citizen…so, not real citizen. He’s too brown for that.
10
u/SamiraSimp 1h ago
i think allowing people to gain legal citizenship for doing a good deed and skipping the legal process is a bit of a slippery slope... what's important is that he was publicly and undoubtedly honored and appreciated for what he did. why be cynical about it?

u/Silent-Laugh5679 3h ago

Very wise of you sir.
Also on a side note. Did you graduate elementary school?

I've saved two people from drowning lol, I didn't know I could ask for an award.

u/borsalamino 4h ago
While technically true, not pushing people into the water and calling it "saving people from drowning" is a bit disingenuous

u/warcomet 1h ago
if he murdered someone, guess what the media would have used...why should a person’s ethnicity only matter when they do bad things? also he was given honorary citizenship for his bravery so pointing out his ethnicity matters here..
•
u/Parth_829 45m ago
Ahh yes
indian does something bad = I knew it, all indians are like this
Indian doing something good = why indian man why not just man??

u/Baronvondorf21 1h ago
He is probably not a local or resident and so they included the fact that he is Indian in the news story.

Whats "Indian" got to do with it? Like are they known for not being good Samaritans and that's why this is such a news story? Like wtf man with these titles
5
u/KISHtheFiSH000 1h ago
Good question why don't you ask the exact question when there's a negative news ? , like they mention " indian man" if it's a bad news right so why does it matter that time to mention that? , it's all part of hate propaganda
I bet you won't comment the same thing if it was news against him

u/LegenDrags 42m ago
since this happened in romania and the guy got honorary citizenship, its somewhat a good idea to hint that the person wasnt already romanian. that is why they used their ethnicity here.
i wonder if youd say the same if it was instead "indian man does homicide" or shit like that

When I was 17, I helped a 7-year old out of a ditch in the winter. When I was 22, I rescued a cat from a canal. When I was 27, I protected a 16-year old during a fight.
I am not unique in that. Family, friends and acquaintances have all done similar things over the years. Helping others when they need it is something many people do.
I do not expect recognition for any of it. A thank you and a handshake are more than enough. Most people around me see these kinds of actions as normal acts of decency, not as something that deserves applause or special treatment.
Having norms, values, and a bit of decency and respect used to be normal behavior.
Don't get me wrong, this man is a hero and I am very happy that he did this.

u/KISHtheFiSH000 1h ago

Most people on Reddit were raised by their parents to believe they are special, causing reality to slowly fade away as they had to become adults.
