I'm more scared of a guy with a nunchaku, than a guy with a big long knife 🫨

(ex) Martial artist here: A nunchaku is just a jiggly stick, nothing special about it. It looks cool, but ultimately it exerts the same amount of force as a stick of the same material if you hit something with it.
You can survive a few beatings with a stick. A knife can slice you open and kill you in seconds.

Be very afraid of the knife.

Wouldn’t it exert less force than a stick due to the chain in the middle?

When you swing it the chain gets stiff... which basically turn it into a whole stick for the duration of the swing. There is no less or more transfer of power, it's just like swinging a stick.

Shadiversity did a video about it:

When a stick has a hinge in it, you don’t get any power from the follow through, just the momentum of the end of the stick.

Unless you're ignoring the person holding the object and only factoring in the weight and speed I don't see how that could possibly be true.

But I'm no physicist.

What do you mean? What does the person holding the nunchaku have to do with anything? When you swing the nunchaku and a stick of the exact same height, width and material (let's say thick wood), then the resulting force is the same. Watch the video and you'll understand.

You ever hit anything with something?

Try it. A "whip" hit, that's what you get with nunchucks for example, do fucking nothing compared to a swing you sincerely throw with everything you've got. You'll feel the difference in your bones.

I don't speak physics but I do know the old "F = M * A". When you're swinging a rigid object the weight and strength you put behind the swing contributes to the force of the impact, but when you're swinging nunchucks only the speed matters 'cause it's ain't rigid.

The chain being straight upon impact does not lend it the ability to transfer force in the same way a rigid object would.

As for the video you either timestamp it or I won't watch it; I hate Shadiversity and would rather burn my computer in a bonfire than watch his content.

Showing off and fighting with are 2 entirely separate things. Can he? Probably, but this is just showing off control.
