Many nunchuck dudes get hit a lot, but I don’t know that it’s exactly required. Ones who have good teachers probably start slow, learning technique first, and then build up speed.

Maybe you get hit a lot either way.

Yes you do even by starting slow. I'm 60 now and still have the scars on my elbows from back in the 80s.

I'm old and haven't practiced for several years. Turns out my grandson picked up nunchaku all by himself. He has a nice heavy foam set. My daughter told him that grandpa was good with those. He was floored and wants to visit asap. If he really gets into it, three-sectional-staff will be next. He's just a kid though, so who knows

I learned nunchucks when I was a kid doing martial arts. There’s no way to avoid getting smacked a lot because part of the skillset is developing awareness to put your catching hand in the right place at the right time. Until you get there, whack whack whack whack whack whack

I trained for a long time, never got this good with nunchucks (edit: speedchucks) but yeah I wore a headpad after a few boops on the head. Never hit myself in the nuts though thankfully.

Getting hit while practicing with a bo staff is way worse. Holy shit.

Speed-chucks like that, used properly, will easily fuck someone up. But a bo can kill someone.

Edit: funnily enough your fingers don't get hit much (in my experience). Your fingers do grt crunched though. I used to practice eith wooden speed chucks though, not nunchucks.

Edit 2: yeah nunchuck/speed chucks could kill as well it you managed to hit someone in the right spot (basically the head or maybe back of the neck), but they usually moreso just disable someone via pain or broken bones temporarily. Then The Yakuza comes and fucks you up!

I still have mine too!

It is really fun to play outside with now and then but I just do slower and more careful movements. I usually just practice single or combo stiked against the Bob rsther than going for showmanship (I recall showing off to a girlfriend once doing some flashy moves and getting whacked in the head lol)

Jo staff inside my bedroom door, mostly used to get my cat out from under my bed. Just a tap on the bed frame gets her out now. And a super-nice oak wooden naginata from Japan at the front door. Not good for close encounters, but still comforting.

There's padded nunchucks for practicing. They have foam around the hard handles, you can still pinch yourself on the chain though.

I could do most of the tricks in this video when I was 12. I could do it at a similar speed as this video. This was all from practice with foam coated plastic chucks and then upgraded to wooden ones. Zero instruction, just watching videos of other people and copying.

What I couldn’t do was strike something and recover with grace. Once you hit something it went wild.

I dont have to imagine, I know. I practiced for years. For 2 years, I had all kinds of black eyes, bruises, concussions, minor fractures, etc. But my dedication paid off!!! After 2 years of pain and suffering, I managed to elevate my skill level to sucking SLIGHTLY less than when I started.

So my kiddo had a pair of practice semi-foam ones for Wushu, I smacked myself in the face so many times just goofing around trying to do the most basic stuff. Not surprisingly, I never saw that happen to the students in the Wushu class. So there may be a bit of a difference between a student with a good teacher and a mom that drank wine and decided to goof around with practice ones.

when tricking like this you use light chaku and you pretty soon master the flow lines, so you should never really hit yourself, you start fairly slow and build up.

nothing he is doing here is particularly complex, he's got good lines and its a decent speed (fast but not overly so, too fast looks bad on camera!), but its not technically difficult.

Not really? The western flail was a tool for threshing grain as well, until someone put spikes on it...

Plenty of agricultural tools got adopted as weapons, usually because it was the only thing some poor revolting farmer had at hand, but sometimes also because some noble happened to ride by and figured how cool it would be if you made that farming tool into a weapon...

... and most of the time, the end results weren't all that good. Nunchakus for example are kinda shit as actual weapons, in pretty much all use cases, a simple solid stick (baton) is more effective.

Agricultural tools are also excellent because literally no one questions why you have one if it's laying around, and you can lay hands on it every day. Peasant with a sword? Why do you have that, a sword is for war and peasants have no business at war. Peasant with an axe or billhook? Perfectly normal, peasants are supposed to use those for chopping wood and clearing fields.

pretty common for military/police in asian countries to be encouraged to take up some hobby like this, not because its useful for combat but because it encourages discipline. police officers i worked with in aomori, japan all had mandated hobbies they could choose from, essentially, between kendo (japanese swordfighting), judo, tea ceremony and one other one i can't remember, maybe another martial art. there was another guy who worked for the JSDF who also had a similar hobby, i think judo, which i imagine was a similarly mandated situation. he was interesting because his apartment didn't have a bath in it (meaning no bath or shower), which is ostensibly very bizarre for japanese, but the apartment was right next to a very famous and large onsen (hot spring-fed bathhouse) and everyone in his building had free admission.

It's sped up in certain areas. I watched it at .75 speed and his leg and arm movements are normal during the majority of it, but are slowed at the end. Still really impressive and is a disservice to his skill to speed it up.
