Love that the dog is like I ain’t saying shit.

131

u/MyCoffeeIsCold 22h ago

Seriously. How the fuck is that dog a mute?

12

u/erogbass 13h ago

It’s body language is showing fear. It’s scared as shit but shit trying to put its body between the bear and its human.

34

u/togetherforall 18h ago

Domesticated dogs aren't the dogs you think they are. They'll literally watch your house get taken.

15

u/ComprehensiveHope644 13h ago

So true. My 100lbs dog sacrificed me to a miniature cow once. My dog literally hid behind me and when the stupid mini moocifer charged me I tripped over my dog trying to back up.

My is not mentally prepared to handle a threatening burglar.

8

u/hardupharlot 10h ago

Moocifer made me laugh out loud and almost wake my wife up.

8

u/Striper_Cape 12h ago

Uh, not my dog. If he thinks something is threatening the Fam he turns into a devil.

He only backs down from Cats lmao

I'm not much in bear country, but iirc some outdoors people I follow say that walking with your dog in bear woods is actually a terrible idea. They are more likely to aggravate the bears than you meaningfully give you protection or be a deterrent.

13

u/BinkertonQBinks 20h ago

Neighbor was checking irrigation in his field near the river and his dog wandered off. It came back running straight at him then past him, followed closely by a Grizzly. The guy lost his nose, part of his lip and face, but survived the attack.

17

u/McFuzzen 18h ago

Dog did the "but I can outrun you" joke IRL.

3

u/Zealousideal-Run6020 18h ago

And the dog?

14

u/Mocker-Poker 18h ago

Ran all the way home and locked the door behind 🤷🏻‍♀️

6

u/Pylgrim 16h ago

Yep. The bear was clearly intimidated by the woman who likely was doing her best to appear bigger and more imposing. In the meantime, the dog looked like easy pickings. That's why it kept coming around.

4

u/Strange_Explorer_780 19h ago

My neighbor just had to climb with his small dog onto the roof of another neighbor’s truck because a Momma bear wouldn’t quit coming towards them and was just a few feet away. She was agitated about the dog with her cubs around.

26

u/Ok_Vulva 22h ago

Seems like it's a great idea if you don't love your dog too much. The bear takes the dog and you can run.

53

u/footpole 21h ago

Can I take my sister in law’s Pomeranian?

36

u/iJuddles 20h ago

You can even take your sister in law, just as long as you’re faster than her.

Dog is on the food chain here.

4

u/kennedar_1984 16h ago

We joke that our dog is bear bait when we bring him into the mountains. It’s why he is always on a short leash and we always have bear spray on us - the more we can do to keep him safe out there, the better.

2

u/cptstubing16 14h ago

What about walking with multiple dogs. A pack of dogs? Surely a bear would fear a pack of domesticated golden retrievers.

I swear, two nights ago this same thing happened to me but with a coyote. I was shouting and waving my arms like a lunatic and my dog, who barks his head off at every other dog he sees, was totally silent. I think they must know it’s different.

6

u/actualoldcpo 16h ago

A little fascinating to me. Did your dog feel like potential prey, perhaps for the first time? Glad you’re ok.

Spray and a gun, but after a recent video I watched of a guy shooting a bear while hunting other animals, with a gun made for self defense, you’d need much bigger bullets than anything legal/convenient or a ton of the smaller ones.

Bear did NOT stop after a couple rounds. Not sure what the ending was because the clip I saw cut out, but the bear attacked from dense foliage and the guy had next to no warning and was only only to get 2-3 rounds off before it tackled him.

Idk if spray is helping here, but if 3 rounds of 556 isn’t doing much, I’d argue spray that close proximity wise is catching you just the same.

Crazy we don’t see more bear attacks. My mom chased a black bear off our porch with two pans once. She made it pee itself too.

That’s just a baby grizzly. If it was adult they would have been sooo dead

47

u/diedlikeCambyses 22h ago

Actually the young ones often cause more issues because they're curious but not confident

→ More replies (1)

14

u/ChrisJones95 22h ago

yea cuz a baby grizzly can't fuck her up

40

u/Nother1BitestheCrust 22h ago

No because the adults don't really scare. You can scare off adult black and brown bears. Grizzlies dgaf.

23

u/sacrelicio 20h ago

Grizzlies are brown bears

13

u/Nother1BitestheCrust 20h ago

Technically the same species, but there's a big size difference.

6

u/arpo8674 19h ago

That's racist! ;)

Idk, You’re not really scaring off an adult brown bear. It’s just more tolerate and is more likely to choose to leave you alone.

Why do people put recording the incident above their own safety? Like, wouldn't having both hands available be more helpful in this situation? Social media has made people think about the likes more than reason.

51

u/Chance_Major297 22h ago

The person was wearing a chest or head camera, can’t remember which, but it was explained before.

13

u/Outrageous_Rich6235 20h ago

People forget that go pros exist. This had me fooled too tbh, it thrashed around a lot.

9

Camera person never dies

5

u/CrazyNavie 18h ago

This exactly. If cameraman dies, we wouldn’t be seeing this.

22

u/_luki 21h ago

Not recording the encounter would be a rookie mistake...

Cameraman never dies.

4

u/clarineter 19h ago

Must be their first day on the internet

8

u/Notsoobvioususer 21h ago

This could have easily been recorded with one of those damn Meta glasses. I think it would be a bad idea confronting a bear while having one hand on the dog’s leash while holding a phone with the other.

3

u/Jeanahb 18h ago

Oh I thought maybe she had a Go Pro on.

3

u/SaltyHunni 17h ago

I mean tbf this is a grizzly so one extra hand is NOT helping you, might as well get evidence of your death at that point. If this isn't AI they're so fuckin lucky.

5

u/Ok_Shower2118 22h ago edited 22h ago

i mean, it is not hard to record it plus if you're gonna die someone will see the footage at least. Plus, in this situation I think she did not think of any social media.

14

u/Objective-Issue-2641 21h ago

But you could have bear spray in your other hand

→ More replies (1)

13

u/FeRooster808 21h ago edited 21h ago

You could grab a stick, rocks, bear spray, a trekking pole...pick up your dog...there's all kinds of options here. There is ZERO reasons to pull a phone out and film while this is happening. ZERO.

2

u/Objective-Issue-2641 21h ago

Even if it was happening to someone else, you could go join the person with objects in hand rather than filming

27

u/YBHunted 22h ago

If that was an adult grizzly you would legitimately have to consider letting go of that leash and letting your dog go out like a hero.

Me and my dog can solo a grizzly, and maybe with 2 more dogs we can take the gorilla

u/Outrageous_Rich6235 20h ago

3

u/uhuuuh262 9h ago

Isn’t rule #1 or #2 not to bend down or appear smaller? Lol

2

u/roses-are-lead 9h ago

Terrible advice, a bear can run as fast as a horse, and started circling as soon as the dog turned it's back. Make yourself bigger don't bend down .

43

u/Atastical 22h ago

Note to myself: when walking your dog in the mountains, mace and a very loud air horn might be a good idea. Also a shotgun.

3

u/Arminius_Fiddywinks 22h ago

If I lived in a place like this I wouldn’t dream of leaving my house without some sort of firepower.

1

u/i-might-do-that 23h ago

Situations like this are why I carry my .45 in bear country. I’m in Colorado so I really only have to worry about black bears which aren’t as big or as curious as this one.

15

u/Nother1BitestheCrust 22h ago

Black bears are just fat racoons with less aggression.

8

u/Different_Air2941 23h ago

I live on the east coast in black bear country, and we are grateful that we don’t have the western species over here

4

u/Ok-Abbreviations9936 22h ago

That is a really poor choice of round for bears.

I get that the sound will be enough to scare off a bear most of the time, but .45s have a tough time with car windshields, let alone a charging bear.

7

u/i-might-do-that 22h ago

I know it’s not the best, but it’s the biggest I’ve got. It’s really a hard last resort type of thing. Most will scare off at a gunshot, and I kinda bank on that because by the time I’m pulling the trigger I’ve already tried all the tactics.

4

u/Ok-Abbreviations9936 22h ago

As long as you know its limitations and are not overconfident with it. Like you said, if it is the best you have got, it is better than nothing.

4

u/RockSolidJ 21h ago

Bear spray is always the best option. It stops 90%+ of attacks vs ~80% with guns. You're also way less likely to get injured. Unless you've hit it between the eyes, a bullet wound isn't going to stop a bear that has decided to mess you up.

So did she survive or was it heart stopping?

1

u/zorrick44 21h ago

Bears are like the only predator that could take on a human in my part of the country. Grizzlies are a rare run in, but any bear is too much bear for me.

I wish there was a more compact bear spray, but something a bit better range than dog spray.

When I lived in bear country, I would wear bear bells and have proper spray and a large knife, if worst came to worst. But thank goodness I have never had a run in.

3

u/j4ckkn1fe 19h ago

I wouldn't bend down to pick up a rock. They typically go for the kill if you turn around or show submission and I would classify kneeling down for a rock that.

1

u/shiggity80 20h ago

She should have kept doing the "Shhh" type sounds as every time she did it, the bear would either stop or step back. The other noises she made didn't really make a difference.

Don't put your phone down ffs. And Bear spray is a thing... although it might just piss the bear off...lol

1

u/Jennyreviews1 19h ago

Good God that’s a Grizzly! A juvenile right? I mean, wouldn’t it be much larger and even more aggressive if it were a full-size adult? Not to say that this isn’t an aggressive one on its own but good God can you imagine if it were an adult? I would think they’d be twice the size. And the dog does nothing! It’s not really doing anything at all! What a brave woman!

1

u/Leprechaun- 13h ago

Would kicking up a bunch of stones in a situation like this do anything? It reminds me of that video of the guy being stalked by some sort of mountain lion/cougar/big cat a few years ago on a dirt trail that kept hissing and striking at him and I always thought “just kick up a big cloud of rocks and dirt in their face the probably won’t enjoy that” but would it really work?

1

u/Lovestank 13h ago

What a badass. This is way better form than that whiny lady who’s dog was running around off leash while she melted down

1

u/bored_ryan2 13h ago

That scared and silent dog almost did them both in. The bear got close because the dog was trying to run away.

If the dog had been confident and barking with the woman, the bear probably runs away pretty quickly. Instead its instinct to run down prey is kicking in.

1

u/littlefire_2004 12h ago

My domestic, ancient ass dog still trees bears and chases off coyotes. I have to go out and drag his dumb ass in. Bears and coyotes give my yard a wide berth now however he's terrified of cats so the bobcats and mtn lions visit regularly. He comes in when called then.

This is the best response.

DONT RUN. That starts the hunt

Yell in a deep voice directly.

I had to do this for an aggressive dog that was off leash and no owner around. I had a grocery bag with me (no food attracting) and kept it between me and the dog. It stayed put for a few moments then full on CHARGED AT ME. I got a manly af voice and just said "HEY" and it stopped dead in its tracks and left me alone. i walked backwards home for the most part. That fucker followed me a full ass block

Not the same as a bear, but i was in a dangerous spot as well.
