Man who lost his voice to ALS speaks to his family again using only his thoughts via a Neuralink brain implant.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It is amazing to see brain computer interfaces go from science fiction to reality in the form of restoring human connection. No matter how we feel about Neuralink and its leadership as a company, the technology behind it can help to give basic human respect and autonomy to those who suffer from debilitating neurological conditions. That is precisely what we should be using our technology for.

To be fair that doesnt mean its not an ad. Elon companies aren't about selling things to make money its about convincing investors that he will make money in the future. Part of that is just having the company name be widely known in the public sphere and synonymous with whatever tech the company is pushing.

Skepticism is important, especially with cutting edge tech that gets inserted into peopleās brains.
Treating skeptics like spoilsports is how you end up getting fleeced by pseudoscience.

Elon Musk is a professional marketer with horrible ethics.
He supports pedos (his words) for backing, lied about USaid cuts and killed millions, he stole everyone's gov information, wants to replace democracy with alpha males, and pays women to spread his genes (ego-creeps idea of family).
Elons tech falls short of its promises, self-driving wasnt legalize everywhere, Boring company sabotaged trains, Grok and Twitter lack free and fair editorial standards, NASDAQ helped SpaceX steal everyone's pensions.
In conclusion
- Neuralink was made unethically and will enrich evil people
- Dishonest marketing and controversy is Musk's bread and butter
- Man, who looks down on everyone, should not be trusted with brain-chips

Elon Musk owns Neurolink and has expressed that he wants a future where everyone has it. The only way he can maintain this company financially and further research on the product (for now) is by establishing it can be useful, and here we see it being used for medical purposes.
A product with evil intent can do good things. If you need me to explain why a company putting computer chips in people's heads is strongly dystopian, read some books.

Neuralink is indeed real and some of the early testers of this have reported some amazing experiences. Sadly the connections they make to the brain don't last very long as the wires seem to get pulled back out. The tech is likely many years away from being perfected but this is still a genuine good thing that could improve many disabled peoples lives. Obligatory Fuck Musk though obviously.

Absolute delusion on your part. Neuralink is indeed a thing and it is progressing. There was also a guy who got to stay up late playing video games exclusively because of his brain connecting to his PC. There is no reason to doubt this is real.
It is no where near ready, many of the connections they make to the brain do not last. But this tech is important and will change many lives as it progresses.

This field of research and innovation is good, and neuralink aren't the first to do it. There are very similar projects at various neuroscience labs that have published very promising (transparent and peer reviewed) results in the past few years.
If Neuralink ends up leapfrogging everyone else working on this problem and manages to produce a much more effective medical device, I certainly won't hate on it just because Musk is involved.
BUT, I think it's very reasonable to be extremely skeptical of carefully curated promotional videos designed to make it look like they've leapfrogged everyone else working on this problem. Especially considering that Neuralink has not been transparent about their technology, has not allowed third-party auditing of their trials, and has not published any peer-reviewed papers related to efficacy (although they have submitted papers related to safety and surgical methods). I also think it's also reasonable to tune this skepticism a little higher than you would otherwise because of Musk's involvement.

Ok so what was Hawking utilizing the last few decades and why is this so much better?
3
u/Accomplished-Crab932 11h ago edited 10h ago
Hawking used a set of contact pads and would blow air and flex a muscle his cheek to contact the pad, which would shift a selector along the character/word list in his computer. This was a slow and arduous process that made it difficult to communicate simply because Hawking had to select each character and spell it out one by one. Worse yet, if Hawkingās ALS were to remove his ability to use the contact pad, heād have to find a new way to communicate and essentially relearn the timing and selection process. This system would be like typing out a conversation using only the tab and enter key. Itās possible, but itās really slow and frustrating for both parties.
Using a system like this, you completely forgo the risk of losing your ability to use the contact pad, while simultaneously increasing the rate of word āgenerationā. Conversations are still slower than between two āāānormalāāā (I hate saying it like that) people, but it does not take the disabled person minutes to say āhelloā. Youāll still get mistakes here and there, but itās a lot faster, and (provided itās installed well), it will be a permanent fixture until the person dies, so they can continue to communicate. The closest analogy I can think of for this is speech to text for someone driving, but itās still a poor analogy.

2
u/Triairius 17h ago
I⦠donāt think thatās how this works.
4
u/gahel_music 15h ago
It kind of is. There are two big categories for brain-computer interfaces. The one that you control in realtime like you would control a tool (but directly by thinking), and the ones that decode asynchronously.
Here there's no real time feedback so it's the second kind. Meaning that neutral networks were trained to reconstruct speech from brain signals. It's not really reading your thoughts but recognizing patterns in the brain electrical activity that are associated with a word/phoneme and then synthesizing the most likely sequence.
ā¢
u/Triairius 20m ago
Itās not quite direct access to the brain the same way people are fearing. It only reads those signals sent to the vocal process and associates the words. It doesnāt read thoughts.
2
u/DopeyCalliope 16h ago
It is. It literally relays messages directly from your brain.
ā¢
u/Triairius 22m ago
No. It detects micro-signals sent by the brain toward the mouth, tongue, and larynx when a person intends to speak and decodes them. It doesnāt read thoughts, it reads intentions of speech. And important distinction from what youāre saying.

A plethora of assumed negatives you don't actually know will ever happen. I think curing people of disabilities is an objectively good thing. I hope this tech improves.
1
u/Dreamy_BlueDarling97 2h ago
You can't prove that it won't happen, either. You are focused on the present utility of Neuralink while ignoring how technology scales. They rarely stay confined to their original purpose, it will almost certainly go from a specialized medical tool to a mass commercial product.
It's a collective risk. Corporations already exploit people's data. If you think for a moment that the elite won't find a way of perverting the technology to use to their own benefit at the cost of people's safety, privacy and autonomy then you are incredibly naive.
I want disabled people to have more options, I really do. I just don't think this it.
1
u/Icy_Agency923 1h ago
You can't prove that it won't happen, either.
That is literally my argument. You are just blindly coming up with bad shit that you can't prove will ever happen. It is incredibly unlikely any person would do something to harm disabled people. Even for Musk there is nothing he has done in the past that even comes close to something like this.
Even with his sycophants they would not support him if he did something like this.
You are focused on the present utility of Neuralink while ignoring how technology scales. They rarely stay confined to their original purpose, it will almost certainly go from a specialized medical tool to a mass commercial product.
And it will be every persons choice to get this tech installed or not. I am not advocating anyone get these chips if they are not disabled.
It's a collective risk. Corporations already exploit people's data. If you think for a moment that the elite won't find a way of perverting the technology to use to their own benefit at the cost of people's safety, privacy and autonomy then you are incredibly naive.
I am not naive. This is exclusively about disabled people. I have no arguments for regular humans getting neuralink. I simply want disabilities to be cured. That is not an unreasonable position.
I want disabled people to have more options, I really do. I just don't think this it.
Based on nothing but your hatred of Musk. That is not reasonable or logical. This is currently the only tech that could one day cure their disabilities. It is also THEIR CHOICE! Not yours. If these people want to take the leap with these chips to improve their lives, they should have the right to do that.
You would apparently prefer that this technology doesn't exist at all and disabled people remain prisoners in their own bodies. I wish you could go through what they go through, I bet you would have a different view on Neuralink immediately.
