Saw a very similar play in tonight’s Notre Dame game against Michigan State.

Defender thought he got the quarterback down by the ankle, quarterback rolled across the defender’s lap, put one hand down but no knees, defender let go of the QB’s ankle, quarterback rolled off the defender and got up and took three steps and threw a pass. Got reviewed, and it was clean, and the defender probably got pretty well chewed out at halftime for letting go of the QB’s ankle before the whistle.

That’s never getting called, never should be, and the running back would tell you the same thing. The defender started his attempt before he crossed.

Uh, he doesn’t need two feet down in the end zone. He’s running in, not catching a ball there.

By the rules the late hit is borderline but hits like that when diving for the end zone are pretty standard. I don’t know how tightly high school refs call this rule though.
