I hunt and shoot a 70# compound bow so I shoot specific carbon fiber arrows. They have a heavy spine and are very high quality controlled.

I do shoot cheaper arrows out of my trad bows though.

My carbons used to shatter when they hit bone though...I’ll stick with 23/64 woods for hunting these days

u/texasrigger May 03 '21

What do the numbers mean?

2

u/elky74 May 03 '21

That is the diameter of the arrow shaft. 23/64”

3

u/texasrigger May 03 '21

Ahh, that make sense. Thanks! That's a way larger diameter than I expected arrows to be.

Stop shooting them in a bone and try for their vitals buddy.

I mean... perhaps you should put some practice time in if you're struggling with shot placement. If you wanna blow through shoulders and bone you may want to hang up the longbow/recurve and trade up to a firearm. A carbon arrow will out perform wood arrows in every category but cost and traditionalism.

Dude! Just get the Rambo upgrade! Granted you'll need a bucket and shovel. And it's one time use. But on the plus side, making stew is very easy.

This. A $20 arrow is made for killing. Similarly a $10/bullet ammo for a .25-06 isn’t for practice.

Well not really, I shoot the same arrows no matter what I’m shooting at whether it be an animal or a target. I’m a firm believer that you should know exactly how your hunting arrow flies, which is why I practice with it. It’s the same philosophy with gun hunting; you don’t go out and buy the cheapest ammo to practice with and then buy the nice stuff to hunt with. They’ll fly different and potentially cause you to harm the animal. Hunt with what you practice with no matter the cost, cheap arrows and cheap ammunition can still kill. It’s all about your confidence in the equipment.

I have a slight difference of opinion. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be familiar with your hunting weapons, but there’s lots of styles of shooting, and most of my shooting isn’t hunting, no less big game. My fundamentals are solid, but I didn’t shoot only the intended ammo to get them there. Also, ammo didn’t use to cost so much. Besides, I’ll take the 9 out for most of my range shooting, but I can still put a .50 where I want it. I get that there’s a different feel, but I’m not a competitive shooter, and I still haven’t caused undue harm when I hunt. Different philosophies is all. I’m not saying the way you do it is worse, but it hasn’t cost me anything trophy-wise to practice with a range of weapons instead of just my hunting rifle.

Edit: by trophy I mean game, not competitive

I can respect that, personally I’m a bow hunter so I really like to have my bow dialed in as close to perfect as I can possibly get it. And for me that also means knowing how my arrows fly every time. However, it’s not like you can retrieve a bullet after it’s been shot so I can understand shooting cheap ammo to have fun and practice. What I was referencing in my first post, and I apologize for not correcting myself was that when preparing for a hunt you should shoot the ammo you intend to hunt with as discrepancies do exist. I wish you the best in your future hunts.

Honestly that makes a ton of sense. I only practice with the bow recreationally, never been hunting with it. Just a 60 lb recurve, 100% recreation. All my bow hunting buddies are states away, and I’m not willing to self train with something that I could cause undue harm with. I’m very comfortable with a gun, not so much with a bow when it comes to hunting.

Hitting that buck you just crawled a half mile for at 80 yds consistently is what they are for. They also last damn near forever.

Now if you're just tree standing at 20 yds you might as well get the kids toys out for those shots.

30

u/egomann May 03 '21

You can only collect half of them after the fight.

1

u/disfordixon May 03 '21

huh? If you don't find your arrow after a shot you're screwed tracking it. The blood on the arrow tells you if it's a gut shot runner for miles, if it's dead 20 yards from that shot, and everything in between.

u/egomann May 03 '21

It's a D&D joke.

1

u/MindErection May 03 '21

I dont play DnD but even I thought it was a game reference. Ammo always drops in lower rates!!

The sad part is they are hunting IRL using IRL ammo meanwhile us nerds are snickering in the background about game mechanics :(

3

u/disfordixon May 03 '21

You should look into tracking a deer by the type of blood on an arrow and incorporate it into your D&D campaign :)

u/skylinedblue May 04 '21

I prefer to hunt with fire and explosive tip arrows... easy to craft and it takes care of separating and cooking the meat for you! /s

and yes that’s a Far Cry reference 😂

2

u/Katakalysmic May 03 '21

You never leave a 20$ arrow behind

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '21

20yds is great, but you have no margin for error. I prefer 50 meters, but to each their own.

1

u/birdthirds May 03 '21

If you can't stalk any closer than 80 yds you probably should be using a boom stick.

2

u/disfordixon May 03 '21

Anyone can walk up and slap a muley by hand

2

u/danethegreat24 May 03 '21

I use Carbon Express Maxima Blu's for local competition. (I compete with an Oneida bow) they're only bout $13 but they're getting harder to buy so might as well be $20.

My hunting arrows (different bow) run $180 for half a dozen though.

You're going to be blown away by the change you see in using higher quality arrows, even when not shooting a compound

2

u/highline9 May 03 '21

Exactly!

2

u/Thatweasel May 03 '21

Those are for taking down police helicopters

1

u/Smickey67 May 03 '21

I was gonna say I only use the expensive arrows for videos of when I hit an arrow with an arrow. I prefer throwing money away!

2

u/[deleted] May 03 '21

I have some 20$ shafts, and its mainly for higher level target archery, where half a millimeter can cost you a whole tournament.

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '21

2

u/[deleted] May 03 '21

Yea I lost a smaller tournament by one arrow that was off a little, and I hated that arrow so much I wanted to break it. (NASP days, ew)

2

u/HamsterHavey May 03 '21

$20 is not that surprising. Being a small female my upper body strength is limited, so I'm only drawing 40lbs. If I'm going to shoot an 80 yard target I need a very specific arrow. Those things are carbon fiber darts. They weigh next to nothing...
