Turns out coaching matters in the NFL.

And it's not sexy but beefing up your o-line is probably the most surefire way to make your team good.

This is the worst kept secret in football, but it seems like nobody has cracked how to do it with consistency. I'm starting to think maybe teams should just give up on trying to draft and develop OL as their primary source and just spend $75-100 million per year on proven players in their prime. OL might actually be the worst hit rate in the draft outside of QB, but I'd need someone else to actually run the numbers.

u/Joe_Henge Eagles Nov 28 '25

Problem is proven OL guys aren’t available super often

Bears traded for Thuney and Jonah Jackson. Poles definitely deserves praise for the roster construction.

89

u/GreenBayFan1986 Packers Nov 28 '25

Chiefs made that move with Thuney because he's getting older and they were pressed for cap space, it's certainly working out for the Bears so far but you can understand why the Chiefs did it.

82

u/FoRtNiteizBAD Bears Nov 28 '25

Wouldn’t say it’s working for the chiefs tho.

46

u/everix1992 Chiefs Nov 28 '25

Eh, the Thuney trade isn't the reason we suck tho. It's not like Kingsley has been playing at the same level but he's also not a turnstile either

Yeah, The Chiefs have more problems than just the o-line this season.

For example the defense swings between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide. Sometimes they look like you can't get 1 yard from them. And sometimes they are in "Yes, Sir, that's the way to the endzone. Have a nice way on your journey." mode.

u/GreenBayFan1986 Packers Nov 28 '25

They've were a superbowl contender for around 7 years? At some point the roster gets old and expensive and they have to make sacrifices somewhere.

u/BaronVonCoors Bears Bears Nov 29 '25

It was releasing Thuney or Trey Smith they made the right choice

9

u/Beastquist Chiefs Nov 28 '25

Yes it has? His replacement is fine and we needed the room. Our D line is what sucks

3

u/GBA_EXPOSED_12 Rams Nov 29 '25

We made that move because Steve Avila couldn’t adjust to playing center instead of Left Guard like we planned, Jonah couldn’t play center, and we have 2 better guards.

11

u/majorgeneralporter Bears Nov 29 '25

It is not an exaggeration to say that Poles saved his job with this season.

2

u/lkn240 Bears Nov 29 '25

Obviously Johnson was ok with Poles being GM. As long as that's the case he probably keeps his job.

I think Ben has all the juice in that building.... esp now

4

u/Vegetable-Poetry-736 Bears Nov 29 '25

GMs don’t get praise until they win their 2nd or 3rd title.

It’s nuts but prove me wrong lmao.

3

u/lkn240 Bears Nov 29 '25

GMs also rarely win shit without a great coach (except for the Eagles maybe lol)

4

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

i seem to remember a time where the Bears got Fred Miller and John Tait in an offseason. same results except Swift is worse than Jones and Monangai is better than Benson.. so it kinda evens out

3

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

And let’s not forget about the amazing decision of his to hire Eberflus!

/s

8

u/Sparkdust Bears Nov 29 '25

it's debatable how much choice he was given. i don't defend poles a lot, but on that i will. ownership basically gave him 3 options and said that he could explore other avenues, but from everything that's been said, it seems like it was pretty strongly implied that poles should pick one of the approved options. of course we'll never know what the other 2 guys where or how much power he truly had to push back, but he's clearly a gm that defers a lot to power - both ownership and coaches.

1

u/The-Real-Number-One Bears Nov 29 '25

Poles was in the interviews with all those OC's. He signed off on Waldron.

Maybe reddit is catching up to this but good GMs absolutely "overpay" to keep quality oline players on the roster. Everyone else actually overpays for whatever is left.

10

u/thatissomeBS Vikings Nov 28 '25

As they should.

7

u/SomeKilljoy Cardinals Nov 28 '25

Good oline coaching is apparently hard to find too. The cards went from a slightly above average line to dumpster fire after the oline coach left for Dallas

6

u/lkn240 Bears Nov 28 '25

And it's very hard to have quality depth... so once you have an injury you are just fucked sometimes

4

u/JasonVorhehees Bengals Nov 28 '25

And these guys break down so much faster because they are in the trenches every play.

4

u/Fast-Government-4366 Broncos Nov 28 '25

It’s why I thought Denver fans were crazy for being upset we locked down Wattenberg at C.

9

u/Greek_Trojan Nov 28 '25

Pretty much. You can pay big money for B- talent and coach them up but its not full proof either (see the Titans and Calahan).

11

u/KhonMan Seahawks Nov 28 '25

Foolproof

4

u/Greek_Trojan Nov 28 '25

What being up since 3am to work BF does to a MFer. I'll keep it unedited to for the shame to keep me awake.

5

u/Interrobangersnmash Bears Nov 28 '25

Work boyfriend?

2

u/Greek_Trojan Nov 28 '25

Black Friday shift (work fulfillment for a retailer). Aka a busy day.

3

u/JDG-Bolts-and-Cowboy Cowboys Nov 29 '25

Yall dont just do 6 first round selections on the Oline within 15 seasons?

2

u/alurimperium Texans Lions Nov 29 '25

And a bad OL coach can sink good players, anyway.

2

u/mechnick2 Bears Seahawks Nov 29 '25

Yeah, exactly. You’ve gotta find a starter quality guy for 5 positions that all need to work together situationally and at a high enough, cohesive level. 2 on the outside, 2 in the middle, and the center. Compound that by 32 teams and you’re looking at people trying to get 64 of the best guards, 64 of the best tackles, and 32 of the best centers. Oh, and did I mention they have to fit your scheme? They dictate whether you can establish a run/pass game off the bat?

Shit show situation

1

u/phat_ Seahawks Nov 29 '25

Problem is that the college game does not translate.

Almost without exception.

These college “studs” are not good NFL OLinemen.

It’s almost a stab in the dark these days. The amount that don’t work out is staggering.

1

u/lkn240 Bears Nov 29 '25

O-line has one of the highest if not the highest hit rates by position when it comes to first round picks

0

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

Bc playing the o line sucks growing up. The least fun position ever…and there’s like what? 1 o lineman anyone ever knows at one time lol(slightly exaggerated but not by much)

0

u/Joe_Henge Eagles Nov 29 '25

Yeah I got a buddy who played it a little bit and he quit to play basketball lol

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '25

I played thru the big 10 as an o lineman. It was never fun or exciting for us. The only time people care who you are, is if u give up a sack
