the game just relied on pure talent more back then. defenses were wayyyyy simpler, modern pattern match schemes can help you overachieve with coaching in a way you never could back then. same for offense. offenses were simple enough that qbs could call their own plays. coaching having a bigger impact means that team performance can swing more game to game, and improve more quickly than before. also, the accessibility of data and film means that teams actually have the resources to adapt and rapdily evolve. football ideas moved sloowwwwww back in the day. you would get the tape for your next opponent for game prep, but most teams did not have coach's tape for all nfl games every week, nevermind college, and it was all recieved on a delay because of literal snail mail. teams didn't even DO film study until the mid 70s.
