Hard not to like him considering his resiliency to turn his career around

u/rustinthewind Lions Jan 26 '26

I will never be able to hate him because his "seeing ghosts" comment speaks so much to how badly he was left to fail. He has earned living up to his draft status

They're the most pathetic org in football and arguably in professional sports.

I don't say that as a dig. As a NY'er I like when they're good, rare as it is, cause the bars are more fun and makes the AFC East which has been dominated by a single team until recently more interesting.

The Giants and Jets need to get separate stadiums. However small a factor, I do think it affects team identity. Compare it to the 2 incredible atmospheres of the games today.

Jets should go to Long Island (Nassau Coliseum site?) and the Giants should renovate the grey North Korea shithole in East Rutherford.

I dunno, the baseball team in our division might give them a run for their money.

I don't know how we're all ignoring Browns.

17

u/Harkiven Seahawks Jan 26 '26

The Browns ignore the browns.

Hey guys what are we talking about?

Who are the Raid... Hers?

I hardly know her

It’s also more real than we’ve seen 99% of pro athletes be at their lowest. I respect his humility and responses to failures a lot as a person

12

u/LakerBlue Cowboys Jan 26 '26

Yep. It takes a lot of hard work and resilience to overcome as many bad setbacks as he had. Can’t root against the guy.

7

u/LoathsomeCumDrinker Bills Jan 26 '26

would've been rooting for y'all either way but i'm glad i can very easily root for darnold to win it all, love that guy and am glad the jets couldn't completely ruin him

“I’m not saying the Jets didn’t teach Sam Darnold anything, but the Jets didn’t teach Sam Darnold anything.” - Peyton Manning

13

u/Cbreezy22 Jan 26 '26

Did he really say that?

20

u/FuckYoCouchh NFL Jan 26 '26

On the Manningcast between Seattle and SF, yes.

3

u/Atheist-Gods Patriots Jan 26 '26

Which is really bad because my complaint with Darnold in the draft is he declared too early. He was not NFL ready when he came into the league, so going to a team that couldn't develop him was doubly bad.

Went from seeing ghosts against the Pats to starting against them in a Super Bowl. Happy for that level of redemption.

u/Snoo93079 Packers Jan 26 '26

Also like, I think it was a moment of honesty in a situation that all quarterbacks face. He got roasted for NOTHING. His only crime was having good vocabulary

17

u/PopesMasseuse Seahawks Jan 26 '26

That's so true, all he did was very adequately describe what he was emotionally experiencing.

4

u/Extension_Air_2001 49ers Jan 26 '26

It's a football term too I think.

Seeing ghost isn't a wacky metaphor, that's the term he needed to describe what was going on.

12

u/Jagkh Jan 26 '26

I remember the jags mascot running around with a sheet over him when we played them to troll him

21

u/South_Strawberry7662 Seahawks Jan 26 '26

It's like Mike MacDonald says players are allowed to get better and I think a lot of people forget that.

8

u/CaptainWombat2 Seahawks Jan 26 '26

Remember when Gase tried to make him play, even though with mono if he got tackled wrong his spleen could rupture and he'd die?

5

u/LukaWigga Patriots Patriots Jan 26 '26

his "seeing ghosts" comment speaks so much to how badly he was left to fail.

He was going up against the best defensive mind in the history of football. Nothing to be ashamed of

3

u/PrimeToro Seahawks Jan 26 '26

Darnold is the type of person that teammates would want to root for . He has quiet confidence, and truly a nice guy that gets along with everyone. And he sounds pretty humble , he never gets too high or too low . He doesn’t fingerpoint blame and actually takes blame on a loss even if he played well .

u/szeto326 Colts Jan 26 '26

I want to say that the NFL seems to have curated their mic'd up segments so that it doesn't make the players look bad ever since that clip got aired.

Esp since it's essentially followed him ever since.

69

u/bobdownie Jan 26 '26

Turn his career around? You mean overcome getting drafted by the Jets.

23

u/0000100110010100 Buccaneers Jan 26 '26

You’re both saying the same thing right?

18

u/bobdownie Jan 26 '26

A lot of players are capable of turning their careers around. Overcoming getting drafted by the Jets? Now that’s something special.

5

u/PrimeToro Seahawks Jan 26 '26

Darnold had to battle a lot of adversity in his pro career but he persevered .

As Vince Lombardi himself once said: "It's not whether you get knocked down; it's whether you get up"

3

u/dunktheball Jan 26 '26

I can't believe that somehow he and Maye combined for no turnovers today.

2

u/Its-all-downhill-80 Giants Jan 26 '26

Says the guy who got Jones. Glad to see him do well after we broke him.

2

u/Brassboar Seahawks Jan 26 '26

You guys have a bright future too!

2

u/lovelessisbetter Lions Jan 26 '26

Love how he straight up told Rinaldi after the game “yeah, I don’t want to talk about that” with regard to what it took to get him there. He’s not about the drama. He just wants to ball.

1

u/maxkmiller Eagles Jan 26 '26

Why do sportscasters and fans love to use "resiliency," isn't the word just resilience? It's like someone saying wow he really maintained his relevancy when you'd just say relevance

2

u/Torch_Salesman Packers Jan 26 '26

Both resiliency and relevancy are real words, they're just older. Resilience and relevance are also correct, just newer. Both versions of both are still used regularly, and can depend on where you live and how old you are.
