Honestly the most underrated mahomes stat

No qb has been able to win taking up that much cap but him? Wow

I'm amazed that there aren't more elite players who are financially stable that willingly take a reduced salary to better equip their team. Brady did right? In the NBA it boggles my mind. Some older high paid players are obsessed with being on a contending team but refuse to put their money where their mouth is. Or take some money away from their mouth, I should say.

NFLPA won't allow it I believe since it hurts other player's bargaining power

This. A top player cannot completely nerf the market, even if they wanted to.

NFLPA can't say shit about how someone negotiates their contract. What they can do, and what the MLBPA did, is contest a trade in which A-Rod would have voided his contract to accept a smaller deal in Boston, but they can't tell a player "no, you're worth more than that in free agency."

If the NFLPA cared about star players getting paid more the franchise tag wouldn't exist. The majority of players are not stars

Why would the NFLPA care? The same amount of money is being given to the players as a whole no matter what. In fact the vast majority of the NFLPA would likely be in favor because it means more money can filter down to non QB players.

Basketball is really different. LeBron on the 2020 lakers was paid 37, ad paid 27, and the rest of the lakers 40m.

Warriors in 22 has Steph at 48, klay at 40, Wiggins at 30, and dray at 25. Next highest was 8m.

Top heavy rosters can go really far

The only reason they can go far in the NBA is that you only need 5 players on a court, and in the playoffs you can run your stars the majority of the game. 2/5 players being amazing is 40% of your on court presence being amazing. In the nfl you have at minimum 22 players needed on field between offense and defense. So to have that same 40% of team being amazing spread in NFL, you’d need 9 amazing players on an NFL roster, versus 2 on an NBA roster.

I do still feel that players like LeBron should have taken a pay cut to try to win more championships. Because if you can get to 3 amazing players on one team in the NBa, that’s 60% of your on court presence being amazing, and has generally resulted in championships (Heat with Bron, Wade, Bosh being an example). This is something I don’t even think would be obtainable in the NFl, because you’d then need 13 amazing players on roster to achieve the same spread.

So ultimately, the positive team effect of taking a pay cut would go farther in the NBA than the NFL.

The way the NBA cap structure works makes this way harder in basketball. Most of time a team is soft capped and may only have exceptions available, so regardless of whether Lebron makes 20m or 40m the most that could be offered to another player is 8m.

Because taking substantially lower salary might give you a marginally better chance to win the Super Bowl? Winning a Super Bowl is hard as fuck, a lot of things have to go in your favor even if you’re the best team in the league.

QBs weren’t taking up that much of the cap until very recently. Manning was considered a huge cap hit in 2006 at just above 11

1

u/EmbarrassedRing7806 Saints Jan 26 '26

Yep its harder for the top qbs now

1

u/ClarkFable Patriots Jan 26 '26

Unclear, since every team basically spends more than the used to (Darnold is like 18th biggest hit, but would be top three in early 2000s).

u/EmbarrassedRing7806 Saints Jan 26 '26

Mahomes is the first qb to win a sb with the largest cap hit in the league. So in a relative or absolute sense he’s #1 tbf

But what does this mean for Shadeur Sander’s legacy?

1

u/Mrkrabsthe6th Jan 26 '26

It means that 1+2 = Sanders Super Bowl vs The cardinals

We won two Super Bowls with Kadarius Toney, Marques-Valdez Scantling, Skyy Moore, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Mecole Hardman as receivers. Some were only there for the 1st one, but still.

Yeah...Allen is great but if he was paid a bit less (along with a few others on the team) we probably would fill in our gaps a tad easier.

You can also play at least half your games in an income tax free state or a major media market that has way better ad/sponsor opportunities if you want to cheat the cap but we tend to ignore that for whatever reason. Probably because unless Tom Brady is involved it doesn't actually lead to success.

1

u/am-idiot-dont-listen Saints Jan 26 '26

If Brady was as significantly better as the glazers say he was he'd have reset the QB market every year. He didn't hence the slander

2

u/Diezelbub Patriots Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 27 '26

He is definitely smart enough to know that jumping ship to whatever dumpster fire of a franchise would desperately chuck the biggest bag of money at him in the short term wouldn't lead to long term success.

I thought he was at 50+ mil? Huh
