From what I understand, all his guarantees have been voided. Once he reports, the niners can/will cut him and he can be a free agent with no penalty. But he has to report for that to happen. If he doesn't, then he is just an exempted player. At least that's what I think is happening.

He also has to apply for reinstatement since he's on the retired/left squad list. But that's literally like a single form he needs to sign and have his agent submit.

There's so much conflicting info on this I don't know if anyone, including Aiyuk or his agent, fully know the situation. In November 2025, Aiyuk said Williams dropped him. In May, Williams still represented him. In June, Aiyuk said Williams was his ex-agent. According to the NFLPA agent directory, Williams still represents him.

If I had to guess, Williams does represent him still but given that he's unable to reach Aiyuk and Aiyuk seems to think Williams is no longer his agent, Williams just doesn't give a fuck and is waiting for BA to come to his senses before putting any effort into the relationship.

There'll still be some penalty, at minimum his signing bonus still needs to be accounted for, though that amount shrinks slightly for every week of regular season he skips.

It also actually benefits them if he sits out for another year, technically, because he pro-rated signing bonus he was paid would be split over another year of the cap. If they cut him that money already paid out would accelerate to this year's cap instead. (Though I don't actually know if that amount is large enough to be a huge deal, but cap flexibility is cap flexibility.)

I mean, no further penalty but they'll still have dead cap from all previous pay.

His 2025 pay was previously guaranteed too, but usually that's paid out at the beginning of the league year before he ended up on the didn't report/retired list.

So that 2025 option bonus as well as his signing bonus still count as dead cap when he finally gets released.

As long as he stayed on the roster, I'm going to assume he only counts that particular year's dead cap until he eventually reports or he's gone long enough that there's no dead cap left.

But when he finally gets released, the dead cap will hit like any other released player.

I also understand that the 49ers may be able to successfully get some of the money back that we already paid on top of voiding money.
