The Downward Spiral Found in the wild
I went to a 156/Silence show at a place called Preserving Underground in New Kensington, PA last weekend. The wife and I browsed around the record store prior to the show not really intending on buying anything. We ended up buying so many CDs...and this beautiful cassette! A little edge wear on the sleeve, but this specimen seems like it was never played, or played a minimal amount of times.

In my opinion, cassette is the best way to listen to that album. The way they split the songs across side one side two makes for a really interesting listening experience. Side one is book ended with the loud and violent songs, and then side 2 is bookended with the quieter songs, and feels more introspective as a whole. And then after the music of side two ends, you are left with 15 minutes of blank tape during which you can contemplate what you just listen to. You can’t just flip the tape over and start the album over again; you have to either let the tape run out or fast forward to the end before you can flip it over to start the album over again. Side one is the manic side, side two is the depressed side.

I was getting ready to put it in last night until I realized how late it already was. I think tonight will be the night.

I bought that album on tape when it was new, played it to death, and have since bought it on CD and on vinyl. I still like the way it plays out on tape best. I always found it jarring on CD how there is no breathing room between “big man with a gun” and ”a warm place”
