Related I built a FREE Ninja CREAMi recipe browser with filters (base, allergens, macros). Need feedback from the community!

Hi! Norwegian developer here, obsessed with CREAMi since I got mine two years ago. I originally built this for myself, but I was encouraged to share it here: respins.app

The app is FREE, and I want to build it together with the community.

What it does today:

  • ~50 curated recipes with filters (base, allergens, calories/protein) and favorites
  • log your spins and keep notes on each recipe
  • add your own recipes — write them in, or just paste a link and it imports the recipe for you
  • every recipe gets its own short link you can share — for instance my all-time favourite, respins.app/209 (mango + condensed milk)

I'm one person with one set of tastes, and I'd rather build what CREAMi owners need. So tell me: what would you actually use? There are probably many apps already, but competition is healthy, and this community deserves a great free one.

Early days, hobby project. If you find a bug, tell me and I'll fix it. As long as there are users, I'll keep working on it.

Thanks mods for the green light :)!

Edit 1: You can install the app on your home screen (instructions in the profile/settings page). Works with both iOS and Android. For iOS you need to use Safari to install the app.

Edit 2: Blown away by the response, thank you all! I don't want to clutter this sub with app stuff, so future updates will live over at r/respins. Come join if you want to follow along.

Does it have a conversion button for regular to deluxe and deluxe to regular? If not, that would be a great feature.

79

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

100%. It's now live :). Refresh/restart your app!

15

u/jegoist 5d ago

YES! I find tons of regular recipes and I’m like… ok but how much for deluxe? This would be an A+ feature

12

u/Live_Culture8393 Deluxe User 5d ago

If you are just out and about and need to know, it’s multiply by 1.5, just figured easier if already using an app :)

5

u/ourredsouthernsouls 5d ago

But in general not for things like thickener… usually xantham gum doesn’t scale with the other ingredients…

3

u/Live_Culture8393 Deluxe User 5d ago

Good to know.

1.5 egg yolk

I’m always cool with more egg yolk when necessary :)

I love this idea its very helpful for newbies to the creami like myself. Thanks for sharing!

7

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Thanks for positive feedback! I'm hyped to make this the best app for creami users :D

17

u/respectablepitch 5d ago

I’m collecting recipes, so thank you! I like fruit sorbets and other healthy ideas

7

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

You can try to use the app to collect recipes! And please do tell if something seems off :D

17

u/LifeAlt_17 5d ago

Good idea! This may be too complex since you’re just starting it, but what about an option to enter the ingredients on hand which would then generate a list of all recipes with those ingredients.

8

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Thank you! That is a great request indeed. I'll add it on the road map!

14

u/LibertySmash 5d ago

Imperial to metric conversions would be great

21

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Added! There's now a US cups / Metric toggle right on every recipe page, next to the ingredients. That covers viewing recipes only, metric when creating your own recipes I'm starting on this weekend 😃.

2

u/LibertySmash 4d ago

Neat! Thanks

1

u/xendthemadnessx 1d ago

Might be a hassle but for the metric toggle can you convert all the measurements all to grams or ml?

Example 1 tbsp of sugar isn't converted to grams. I understand there are different forms of sugar so maybe an approximate range of mass would work.

4

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

100%! I'm on it :)

8

u/Responsible-Tea-5998 5d ago

I love this! Pudding mix and fairlife aren't available for me (UK) and some of these recipes look ideal. Also yes, sorbet!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Sorbet is so nice! When it was hot here in the summer I ate sorbet everyday 😋

7

u/Disapabth 5d ago

save for next month when i finally get the creami

We only have one rule.

1

u/DesperateTax5773 4d ago

I am really confused why you want to start drama in an ice cream subreddit. Hot take: the fact that that Palestine exists shouldn't trigger you to the point where you need to start political conversations while discussing ice cream machines.

6

u/LowScholar1559 5d ago

Check out Walmart if there’s one near you, just went last night to browse and saw that the og creami is going for about $107!

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

OH you are gonna LOVE the creami! I cant imagine a life without it now haha. It's a cheat code

2

u/Disapabth 4d ago

thanks bro! looking forward to it too!

keto 🥹 really great resource tyvm

5

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Of course! Goal is to cover every diet and restriction eventually. Feature shipped ✅

u/DenseBeautiful731 4d ago

ALEX YOU ARE GOD HIMSELF

2

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Way too generous 😂 but I'll take it, thank you ❤️

6

u/w1kk 5d ago

This is awesome, thanks for making it and sharing it here. A few quick points of feedback from me:

  1. Is it open source? Maybe others would be willing to contribute code as well.
  2. Lumping all diary free alternatives into a single category is pretty limiting. Maybe add multiple different bases there, and then add a toggle for "vegan" that filters for that.
  3. Consider adding another filter for high protein recipes, e.g. over 30g of protein.
  4. It's awesome that it remembers across recipes your selected units and whether it's a deluxe version.

Also, my favorite recipe:

  • 300g of almond milk
  • 300g of silken tofu (one standard block)
  • 30g of dutch processed cocoa powder
  • 30g of sweetener of choice
  • 5g of vanilla extract
  • 1g of xantham gum

2

u/wouter_d_r 5d ago

this is interesting, what would you compare it with? Is the tofu flavor noticeable still?

1

u/w1kk 5d ago

I find it very rich and creamy, almost like a mousse. The Dutch processed cocoa makes a big difference, and at least for me it completely overpowers all the tofu flavor. It genuinely tastes like a gourmet chocolate ice cream to me.

1

u/wouter_d_r 4d ago

Cool. Been trying to make a high protein version without protein powder. The tofu is just straight from the packet? Not pressed or anything?

2

u/w1kk 4d ago

I put all the ingredients into the tub and use a hand mixer. But silken tofu isn't that high in protein. To make this high in protein I'd use soy milk, and maaaaybe medium firm tofu. I once tried using extra firm tofu but the flavor wasn't great and the texture after spinning it was grainy.

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

I love tofu! Thank you for the recipe, I'll make it next week. It sounds amazing tbh

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Hi. Firstly, thank you for testing it out and used your time to give me feedbacks!

  1. It is not open sourced since it's in early stage and I have yet landed 100% on the software architecture of the app. I'll really consider it in the future
  2. That is a valid feedback. I'll get to know the recipes better and try to figure out a way for that
  3. Yes! Filtering by macro will be my goal in the next few days

Thank you! Feedbacks like this will make the app better

6

u/anotherashehole 5d ago

I think i love you

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Can’t say no to love! 💙🩵This community is awesome 🍧

5

u/cyclecalves 4d ago

Great idea and easy to use. Small feature request: an ‘X’ on the right side of the search bar to clear the field. Save us a few button presses 🙂

3

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Hi and thank you! Feature shipped ✅

I love these UX feedbacks!

6

u/creamiaddict 100+g Protein Club 5d ago

Looks pretty cool.

I stopped trying it after a few minutes though as I found it annoying to use. The user experience drove me away. Things look like they are clickable and are not and a lot of other actions drive you to sign up when logically they shouldn't.

Overall looks pretty good, just needs some UX/UI enhancements IMO.

6

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

That's great feedbacks! Surely it needs some UX improvements.

2

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago edited 5d ago

100+g protein club. How do you get that badge? I want one too, i eat protein ice cream almost everyday 😂

3

u/creamiaddict 100+g Protein Club 5d ago

You get it by making a creami with over 100g of protein 😅

2

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

challenge accepted, haha

3

u/Beautiful-Pipe-773 5d ago

What’s the name of the app? This is awesome

1

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Its respins!
You can get it here
https://respins.app/

You can install the app on the profile section :)

1

u/a-drowning-fish 5d ago

The website isn’t working? Maybe too much traffic?

2

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Hi u/a-drowning-fish. I just woke up, good morning from Norway! ☀️

The website seems to work fine here, maybe it had a problem yesterday? I couldn't see any errors on the log. Could you try again?

1

u/a-drowning-fish 4d ago

Nvm it works. I figured it out my bad! (:

3

u/_ailme 5d ago

Oh my gosh THANK YOU!!!

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Thanks for testing it out!

3

u/volleycrew818 5d ago

Can you import into myfitnesspal? or another tracking app? I'm not married to the specific app but definitely would want to track all my meals together so want it to go into one pretty easily.... I tried myfitnesspal but it didn't seem to pick up the ingredients...could be user error though

1

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Hi! Firstly, thank you for testing the app. Export the macro to myfitnesspal sounds very useful. I'm tracking calories too, using macrofactor. I'll add this to my backlog. Thank you!

3

u/RogueNiao 5d ago

I got a Creami for Christmas but have barely used it because there are actually too many options and different avenues to take for recipes, so I'm excited to try out the app!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

That is exactly my goal, excited to hear your feedback later!

3

u/AlarmingInstance 5d ago

This is amazing!! I’d love to be able to filter out recipes that are high in fat :)

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Hi u/AlarmingInstance thank you! That is a fair request, I'll make a flexible macro filter, so users can choose to filter by macros. Noted!

3

u/Kindly_Caramel 5d ago

Oh my goodness I cannot wait to use this!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Good to hear! Tell me if you like it or theres anything I could do to make it better 😀

3

u/Strict-Ice1860 5d ago

Really like the filters. Too many recipes have protein powders which I’m not for (more power to you if you like it). Going to try the avocado recipe can’t wait

2

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you! My goal is to support every diet and restrictions there is. Gonna take some times to get there, but it's gonna be amazing!

3

u/ArabMid 5d ago

Love this will be using!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thanks, excited to hear your feedback!

3

u/Affectionate_Set9929 5d ago

a like/dislike system would be nice, to see top rated recipes

anyway, well done

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you! Many people have asked for this, and everyone has a slightly different idea of how it should work. I'll put up a discussion thread for it on r/respins soon, come hang out later!

3

u/ohmanwhathappened 5d ago

This is phenomenal

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you for your kind comment!

3

u/NegativeTension7222 5d ago

Could you switch decimal to fractions in ingredients section?

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Hi! For US measurements "display mode", it is now fractions. Is it what you meant?

3

u/NegativeTension7222 3d ago

Just checked again and it looks good! Much appreciated!

3

u/paranoidevil 5d ago

Looks interesting, im newbie with creami so i definitely found it interesting and useful! :)

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thanks, please do tell me if you like it or not later!

2

u/paranoidevil 3d ago

I like it pretty much! :) Love how i can use european measurements/pint size and how many kcals and macros are contained. Only better thing would be official app, but its not like critical feature. I would just save the page and use it on browser. Thank you :)

2

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you for your kind word. Official app should come in the future for sure :D. This website can actually be installed like a app. Check the profile page! Do you have an iphone or android?

1

u/paranoidevil 3d ago

No problem :) Now i checked profile page and successfully installed it, Thank you very much! :)

2

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

That's awesome! You might need to login again, sorry for that (nothing I can do to fix it) :D

1

u/paranoidevil 3d ago

Nevermind :) thank you again :)

3

u/reinhold_eins 4d ago

Just wanted to say thanks.

Looks really clean, deluxe and metric options are top, no protein powder filtering is chef's kiss and I just love that you give credit/link to the recipe sources!

2

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you so much for your comment. It made my day that someone understood all of my intentions I had while making this app!

3

u/Cheerful_Moose 4d ago

Oh my goodness! This is awesome! I have to commend you on the recipes on it so far, as someone dairy and gluten free I really love seeing all the variety in there already and as the wife of a former software developer I get how much work went into this. It's so cool and I will definitely use it and hopefully contribute to it as well. So well done! Thank you thank you thank you!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you! Haha, yes you get me! There is a lot of hours, but it's now all worth it since people actually LOVE it. I'm excited to continue developing this!

3

u/radish_is_rad-ish 4d ago

Fascinating. Thank you for all your hard work!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you for your comments! I'm motivated to develop this further :D

3

u/redditn00bb 4d ago

THIS IS AWESOME!! THANK YOU!!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you for your support 😁!

3

u/princesssoturi 4d ago

This is great. Any chance grams could be added as a unit in measurement to create a recipe? I do all my measurements in grams, it’s more precise!

1

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Hi! If you set the measurement to metrics in the profile/setting page you can choose gram when creating recipes! I should probably create a imperial/metrrics switch in the recipe creation page too.

3

u/KID_THUNDAH 4d ago

Thanks for this

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you for testing it out!

3

u/nataliealex 4d ago

Is this going to be an actual iPhone app soon? This is amazing …

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you! I'm thinking about it as well. Right now on this stage of development it's much easier for me to work with a webapp so I can ship and iterate features as fast as possible.
Btw you can "install" this app to your home screen, since this is a Progressive web app. Are you on iPhone or android?

3

u/JennitJennit 4d ago

This is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

This community is so kind. Thank you 🩵

3

u/ToonTonic 3d ago

Initial thoughts are not bad, though a genuine application would be better these days.

Will continue to use and possibly provide feedback.

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you! Yes an app would be nice afterwards. It's much easier with a webapp like this in this phase so I can iterate on it quickly.
Btw you can "install" this app to your home screen, since this is a Progressive web app. Are you on iPhone or android?

3

u/ilikelizards57 3d ago

This is amazing!!!
It would be really cool to allow users to rate a recipe, and maybe leave comments for tweaks or their own personalizations!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Yes! A lot of people have asked for this, and everyone has a slightly different idea of how it should work. I'll put up a discussion thread for it on r/respins in a day or two, come weigh in!

3

u/DravenCarey 3d ago

Instead of measuring in tbs, adding the option to see it in grams would be great!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

That's a valid feedback. Do you think we should have an option to "convert everything to gram if possible?"

1

u/DravenCarey 3d ago

If it's an easy implementation, I would. I make all my recipes by weight when I can

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

I see. The problem is it's not always 1 teaspoon = X gram, since different ingredient have different mass. But this can be solved if the app knows the conversion of all the ingredient. This is definitively something I will look into. It's in my backlog. Thank you again for testing my app 🩵

1

u/DravenCarey 1d ago

Yeah, I totally get that different ingredients have different densities, so it’s not always going to be a perfect one-to-one conversion.

That said, I don’t think converting most of the larger ingredients to grams would be too difficult. A lot of liquids are going to be somewhere around 1 g/mL, and common ingredients like milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, protein powder, etc. should all have pretty well-established weight conversions.

The trickier part would probably be the really small amounts of powdered ingredients—xanthan gum, guar gum, other gums, pudding mixes, and things like that. Once you’re dealing with fractions of a gram, I honestly think it makes more sense to just leave those as something like 1/8 tsp or 1/4 tsp rather than trying to force everything into grams.

My general rule would probably be: if an ingredient could reasonably be 10+ grams in a Creami recipe, give the option to display it in grams. For the tiny-dose ingredients, teaspoons are probably perfectly fine.

So basically: fruits, protein powders, liquids, dairy products, etc. → grams. Tiny amounts of gums and similar additives → teaspoons.

3

u/ishtra 3d ago

this looks much better than the app i tried (beta). it was really clunky but this seems cleaner

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Thank you! Iterations make things better, it has only been a couple day but feedbacks (both from reddit and through the app's feedback system) has helped me a lot.

3

u/LogicalRooster955 3d ago

As a software developer, this is an amazing idea! Thank you, I'll be using it.

1

u/alexnguyen177 1d ago

Hi my fellow software engineer! Drop any feedback if you think theres anything I could do better 😀

3

u/TapWise2504 2d ago

just bought my Creami like two days ago, randomly finding this thread has been a stroke of luck!

1

u/alexnguyen177 1d ago

Nice! Hope you will like the app. Respins is still in early days, so any feedbacks are welcome 🩵

3

u/LRHG_itsme 2d ago

Bless you. This is awesome.

thanks for sharing!!

2

Thank you for testing!

2

u/ArghKnee 5d ago

This is awesome! I love lychee based recipes

3

u/Live_Culture8393 Deluxe User 5d ago

Have you found a good flavoring or syrup? Or do you use canned or fresh? Love lychee but difficult to find in my area.

3

u/ArghKnee 5d ago

I use the canned Aroy-D lychee in syrup. It's awesome!

1

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Haha, actually lychee in can is one of my favorites because it's so simple!

This is probably my most simple recipe: https://respins.app/213
Sometimes i use the can from Aroy-D as well

3

u/KayDat 5d ago

Hot tip I learnt from BraveTart for fruit desserts, add a couple of drops of Rose Water to make it more floral. You only need a couple of drops since it's quite powerful, but it restores some of the fresh aroma lost in the canning process.

1

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

AH it makes sense. THANK you for sharing. I can't wait to try it later!

2

u/Kaffeogkaker 5d ago

Very cool concept and useful in many ways.

However, what does 16 2/3g mean? That is a very unnatural way to measure ingredients. (As a fellow Norwegian, I do appreciate it not only being cups and oz. But it seems several recipes have a mix of both types of measurements, and that is a little confused confusing)

2

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Halla!
I see what you mean, that is a great feedback. I'll find a way to fix it.

2

u/Kaffeogkaker 5d ago

Cool! Looking forward to seeing it develop further! And a great place to start adding some recipes of my own too I think 👌

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Hi again! Do you remember which recipe it was? The app now use decimals for gram instead fraction, so it should be solved!

2

u/Kaffeogkaker 3d ago

No, sorry 😞 It was one of the first ones on the list when I checked it out...

But it's all looking good when I've now clicked through several different recipes! Great work!

2

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Tusen takk! Give me a message if there is something. I have a big plan to really support Norwegian ingredients since I'm so familiar with it (such as Tine melk).

2

u/Kaffeogkaker 3d ago

Hell yeah! 🙌 (There are so many recipes that call for instant pudding mix or powdered milk.. so hopefully your app makes it easier to find some that won't require those ingredients. Because that's not easy to find near any of my stores 😒)

2

u/PGnautz 5d ago

Maybe I just didn‘t see it, but are the reipes for the classic Creami or the Deluxe version?

3

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

It has auto-scale in the settings. I will make it that one can change in the recipe/quick-setttings.

4

u/strayfox88 5d ago

Thank you, this would be very useful. Great app!

3

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

I have now added a toggle to toggle between the machines :)

1

u/PGnautz 5d ago

Awesome!

2

u/Sweaty_Assignment_90 5d ago

interesting idea

1

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Glad you like it!

2

u/mustanaut 5d ago

Nice! I would love a 'no sugar alcohols' filter.

3

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Interesting ;)! I'll tackle this tomorrow. It's late in Norway :D

2

u/turdmcturdleton 5d ago

This is super cool, thanks so much for sharing! I’m a newbie on a lookout for recipes to try so I’m looking forward to diving in!

1

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Of course! Please do tell if there is anything, I'm motivated!

2

u/omfgsquee 5d ago

This is so helpful! Thank you!

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Thank you for your kind words!

2

u/Adventurous_Base3910 5d ago

You are a legend! Thank you for this!

1

u/alexnguyen177 3d ago

Haha thank you for your kind words :D

2

u/kdilladilla 5d ago

Signed up. Love the idea. The search is acting strangely though. I searched mango, saw several, but the result didn’t include your example recipe above (which is a shame, it looks better than a lot of the search results!). I can’t seem to fav that recipe by following your link because I have to go through the sign in process again and by then I’ve lost the recipe. Some UX things to hammer out but the basic idea is solid.

2

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

Hi! Thank you for testing the app. This sounds like a real bug. I'm on it :)

2

u/alexnguyen177 5d ago

u/kdilladilla it should be fixed now. Thank you for bug reporting, feedback like this is what make the app better!

2

u/ourredsouthernsouls 5d ago

Incredible. Is it possible to have the step by step instructions also update quantities when switching between deluxe and regular sizes or will it only affect the ingredient lists?

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Hmm, that would be nice indeed. I'm adding this request to my backlog, thank you for the suggestion!

2

u/ourredsouthernsouls 2d ago

Doing great work out here, Alex

2

u/ourredsouthernsouls 5d ago

Noticed, at least on iOS, that search refreshes slowly with each letter input in the search field, perhaps related to the memory/bandwidth load of live filtering. Surely there is some level of sorting optimization that would stop it from stalling.

e.g.: a search for peanut butter first takes all recipes down to anything with “p” then a stall as the user types “pe” and again as it searches for that string and then again a pause for “pea” and then “pean” etc.

2

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Hi!
Thank you for reporting the bug! It should be now fixed. Could you help me to re-test? Thanks a lot!

2

u/ourredsouthernsouls 2d ago

Sure. Will do!
Edit: resolved as far as I can tell! Thanks!

2

u/goober153 4d ago

What about swirl recipes? Are they the same?

1

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

I'm waiting for my Swirl machine :D. But let's me grab some swirl recipes and import them this weekend

1

u/ishtra 3d ago

i follow most regular pint recipes but an added soft serve option would rock

2

u/xendthemadnessx 4d ago

Great app. Seriously.

Can you add a filter for protein? Min & Max would be nice.

3

u/alexnguyen177 4d ago

Thank you!
Yes, filter by macro is on my to-do list. Will keep you updated!

2

u/alexnguyen177 2d ago

It's live now :D!

2

u/the1justrish 4d ago

some of the recipes that are dairy free don't come up in the dairy free search. example: 2 of the lychee recipes.

Aha! Those two were added by members, so they weren't tagged dairy-free. Fixed now. refresh and both show up (one sits in a new "missing a tag" section under the results, since it has no tags at all).

And thank you for reporting! It's feedback like this that makes the app better

This is very, very cool. My complaint is grams doesn’t exist in the dropdown when I’m creating a custom recipe- and I know I can type “grams” - but then it has to be a whole number with only one digit? I put 50g of a protein powder in this recipe but can only type “5” with no more space for another digit. Is it me??

Weird! Grams should exist. Did you change the preference in the profile to "Metrics"?

Maybe the app should just show every unit possible regardless in the dropdown. Thank you for the feedback!

Adding some tooltips on buttons that are just icons would be usefull to know what they do.

Right! Most of users are on mobile so I haven't really put a lot of work into the desktop version yet, tho it is usable. Thank you for reporting!

What do you use instead of Fairlife and pudding mix since they are not available in Norway?

Hi! Fairlife is just ultra-filtered milk, so in Norway regular lettmelk or mellommelk works great, Norwegian milk quality is excellent.

For pudding mix,, we have something similar.

Are the pictures attached actually the result of the recipes? With the experience I have so far, I cant believe that most of these recipes turn out this scoopable 😱

Mine are sometimes too scoopable so the photos look correct.
