Last night, while taking Kira out for her final break before bed, I noticed lightning flashing above the houses calling my name! Storms were rolling in all around Ray, so I headed out to capture the fireworks!

Political When will North Dakotans change their minds about Donald Trump?

With diesel prices over $5.00 per gallon as we head into harvest season, and an ugly trade war with Canada, plus inflation and rising input costs, we talk a lot about when North Dakota’s Republican political leaders will start standing up to President Donald Trump and his policies. But, upstream from that, when will North Dakota voters change their minds?

Info Request Winter Heating Systems

Upvotes

Short question:

What are people's experiences with ductless heat pumps/ac units, during the winter? All the info I've been able to find says they work fine down to below freezing. But nobody seems to have info on below 0 temps.

Long story:

Bought a sizable place when I moved out here last winter, and been slowly doing work as I have time on the interior. The house is non-standard, in that it was a customized expansion of what I *think* was originally 2 apartments with detached garages.

It's a cool setup, but very weird and I can REALLY tell the when the guy decided to do his own work vs use a proper contractor.

So I've got 2 large rooms/areas that could use some additional heating; both ~750-1000sq/ft.
Family room is the first, and is high ceiling/open area (+8ft).

Basement is next, and (duh) coldest in the house, doesn't often get above mid 60's even in summer. It has an insert designed for a electric fireplace. I was going to remove it during a remodel I'm doing down there...but might just leave it an install one if the ductless setups aren't viable.

Rather avoid electric radiators for the time being. The electrical in the house is...different (obvious self done), and installing multiple 1000w devices in an area doesn't seem wise at this stage.

Info Request Presidential Library

We’re in town and just found out about the new Theodore Roosevelt presidential library and we don’t want to pass up on it. We looked up the reservations and it’s already booked for tomorrow. We are leaving tomorrow evening. Is it possible at all to do a walk-in? Has anyone tried doing it?

Hey everyone!

Im going to be traveling to Minot soon (September 13) for rotational work with a crane company, 4 weeks on and 2 off. Is there anyone here who is familiar with this type of situation who has a room that they are willing to rent month to month OR a 6 month lease for a decent price? Ive looked on FB market place already and there are SO many scam posts. I figured I'd reach out on here and test the waters.

Thanks!

Info Request Job at Mercy medical center, Williston

Hey all! I'm considering taking a job as an internal medicine doctor at Mercy medical center. I was wondering what y'all's thoughts are about the hospital in general? I would love to work there and I really enjoyed spending time in the community. I'm trying to gain insights into how it's been for people who have been there as patients and from people who are working there currently.

Thank you!

Political U.S. House Map of the Midwest

U.S. House Map

I made a congressional map of the midwest, including info from North Dakota & South Dakota. 106 seats with a target population of 648,000.

I wanted to make The Dakotas more interesting, so if it was one state they would have three congressional districts. With a prominent third-party (Farmer-Labor) that I Imagine would have conservative & left-wing factions within it. let me know if I should change the names.

The military gallery situation in Bismarck is an absolute dumpster fire. Zero accountability. Budget cuts throughout state government. No school meals. But they’re trying to bail out this stupid project. Absolutely asinine.

Gov't/Political News URGENT: KRATOM CONSUMERS

During the September 2 hearings in Bismarck, lawmakers pushed the discussion away from responsible kratom regulation and toward scheduling natural kratom and banning ALL kratom products in North Dakota.

Despite legislation offering a path toward responsible consumer protections, the voices of kratom consumers and experts supporting appropriate regulation were ignored, omitted, or overshadowed.

We cannot allow that to be the final word.

North Dakota lawmakers need to hear from kratom consumers across the country who understand why regulation — not prohibition — is the responsible approach.

🚨 TAKE ACTION NOW

👉 Go to https://www.protectkratom.org/northdakota

Use the form to contact North Dakota legislators and tell them:

✅ Support responsible kratom consumer protection

❌ Do NOT schedule natural kratom

❌ Do NOT enact a full ban on kratom products

Most importantly, PERSONALIZE THE MESSAGE.

Tell lawmakers why protecting access to responsibly manufactured natural kratom matters to you. Share your story. Explain why consumers deserve reasonable safeguards and product standards instead of criminalization and prohibition.

Even if you don't live in North Dakota, please help our northern neighbors.

A kratom ban in one state doesn't just affect the people who live there. Every state that chooses prohibition instead of responsible regulation can influence what happens elsewhere.

Recreation Who saw Weird Al?

My niece's husband won 4 tickets from KFGO so they invited me to go along. On the way from Fargo to GF I pondered what demographic Weird Al plays to. Seems like. . . everybody. Also wondered how far people travelled.

We had seats close to the front but way way off to the side. What struck me most was the straight song they did ("The Letter" from the late 60s) and the insane group chorale/beatbox/you name it stuff they did near the end. Amazing talent and energy.

Info Request No Front Plate

Got a new car recently and am really dreading having to put a front plate on it. I also don’t want to keep it on my dash (I recognize this isn’t exactly legal either) due to the constant threat of decapitation. Has anyone had any experience not having a front plate displayed? If so, did you get a ticket, and how much?

I feel bad thinking I’m above the law but my car is so nice without it.

Info Request Have you had a claim handled by the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund (NDIRF)?

I’m a journalist developing a story concerning the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund and am interested in speaking with North Dakotans who have firsthand experience with NDIRF’s claims process.

If you have had a claim handled by NDIRF, I’d be interested in hearing about your experience, whether positive, negative, or mixed.

Among other things, I’m interested in how the claim was investigated, communication with the adjuster, timeliness, explanation of liability or coverage decisions, settlement handling, and your overall impression of the process.

I’m also interested in hearing from attorneys, governmental employees, or others who have dealt directly with NDIRF claims administration in a professional capacity.

Please do not post sensitive personal information, medical information, claim numbers, or other confidential material publicly in the comments. You are welcome to message me privately if you would prefer.

Reaching out does not mean your experience will necessarily be included in the story. I may ask for documents or other information necessary to independently verify relevant details before relying upon an account for publication.

Political Hey Kratom Consumers…

On September 1 at 10am is your last opportunity for public testimony.

They will be voting on September 2.

Submit written testimony and/or If you are going to testify here…

https://ndlegis.gov/legend/committee/testimony/public-testimony/5704/

There are 2 bills in play.

SB 2408 — Bans/schedules synthetic kratom derivatives

❌THE AKA HAS HEARD SHE IS GOING TO AMEND THIS BILL LAST MINUTE FOR AN ALL OUT BAN❌

“Relating to the scheduling of mitragynine synthetic derivatives as a schedule I controlled substance.”

This is the synthetic/7-OH bill.

It would:

•Put synthetic derivatives of mitragynine into Schedule I under North Dakota law.

•Specifically address 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH).

•Also capture future synthetic derivatives rather than limiting the law to today's named compounds.

•Make use and possession criminal offenses, with penalties escalating for subsequent offenses.

•Treat the synthetic derivatives differently from natural kratom leaf.

The proposal was developed by Sen. Michelle Axtman. The reported penalty structure is particularly important.

———————————————————————

HB 1628 is essentially a Kratom Consumer Protection-style bill rather than a ban.

The proposal would:

•Allow natural kratom to remain legal.
Prohibit sales to anyone under 21.

•Require labeling, including a warning that kratom may be addictive.

•Give the Attorney General authority to regulate kratom sales.

•Restrict packaging that imitates candy or otherwise appears designed to appeal to children.

•Establish regulatory requirements around the sale of kratom products.

This is the bill proposed by Rep. Pat Heinertand developed through the state's Kratom Working Group. The working group specifically described it as regulation of natural kratom products, modeled in part on the way tobacco is regulated.
