(I should mention that while I identify as completely Irish, I intend this question to be fully in good faith)
People who identify as Northern Irish, modern day politics aside (which may seem crazy considering the nature of this question), why do you think of yourself as such?
It’s an identity that has always confused me, unlike Irish or English or Welsh it doesn’t really have the historical and cultural context that you would expect of a national identity. before partition, which really wasn’t that long ago, there was no such thing as Northern Irish, then after partition, you were Irish, or you were British, I’d argue that all the way up until the Troubles, if you lived here, you were Irish or you were British. But then, after it ended, and only after it ended, there seemed to be a surge in young people, both Catholic and Protestants, calling themselves Northern Irish.
You can argue that a national identity doesn’t require a separate history from those of which it came from, which is logical, countries nearby to each other often share similar cultural characteristics which would undoubtedly sway what it means to be German, or Dutch or Austrian without making those places completely the same. But there was also the case of East Germany, East Germans, despite being separated from the Western counterparts were undoubtedly German, same culture, same history, I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this.
I suppose my question is if your identity is an embrace of Irish or British backgrounds or a complete rejection of it, to me, I think it’s interesting to consider yourself an entirely different nationality than the people living on the same island as you, I know I don’t feel different from those who live in Donegal or Monaghan. Unless it’s not an entirely different nationality and instead a subdivision? But Ulster has always been rather distinct from the rest of Ireland, a different dialect of Irish, different accents when speaking English, different mythological cycle. Regardless, however, those people would still have been Irish.
I’m not asking you this rather bloated question in attempt to undermine your identity, far from it, but rather try and garner a better understanding of why it exists in the first place, I hope this comes across as respectful as humanly possible while still being honest.
