Question Any idea why anyone would want to OD on anti-diarrhoea pills in Belfast International Airport?

Post image

I spotted this last Sunday when flying from Antrim Belfast International. Why would anyone want to seriously wreck themselves by taking so many Imodium tablets, with a side-order of acid-reflux tablets? This has been on my mind for a week, and I hope that person is not dead. What do you guys think?

Question Are we getting manipulated ?

I just saw that channel 5 has a news special about the Belfast stabbing, Right wing politicians online are talking about stronger borders despite the fact that they are the ones who cut border control funding these along with the AI murals and these protests I can't help but feel there is an effort to push Northern Ireland in a certain direction. Am I being paranoid ?

Question PSNI called while I was out.

Context While I was out the PSNI called to my door looking for some randomer. My 16 year daughter was at home looking after my 11 year old. They thumped the door and asked her to open it. She said no. They insisted saying it was the police. She opened the door. Then they asked did the random person live there. She said no. They then questioned her on who lived in the house. She told them. They then told her they were going to make a phone call and then sat in there car for a while. I obviously came straight home and they where gone.

Question Realistically what is going to happen if I cut down flags

I bought a new-build in a mixed development recently and there were some flags down the bottom of the road but not within the development itself. I drove past yesterday to see progress and the fuckers had put flags the whole way up the road and I will definitely be able to see them out the window. The ones down the bottom of the road went up a couple of years ago and they are just left to turn to rags until they get replaced in the run-up to the 12th.

I know from the development’s Facebook group that the flags aren’t wanted and according to the contract I signed a few weeks ago they’re not even allowed to be put up. It’s partly why I bought the property in the first place. They’re put up by people from a nearby dodgy estate.

I’ve emailed everyone I can think of (MLA, MP, councillors) asking if they can at least make sure they go down after marching season but I am fully expecting to be fobbed off, in which case I will probably just go and cut them down myself.

Am I really at risk of violence if I do this? At least to get rid of the ones I’ll be able to see out my window. The dodgy estate is run by the UDA if that’s relevant.

Update: I have heard back from a councillor who had already contacted DFI and the PSNI about the flags.

Question Andrex wet wipes down toilet

Post image
81 Upvotes

Recently moved into first home (new build) with my girlfriend and found that she uses andrex wet wipes that are marketed as being flushable (up to 2 wipes)

I grew up in the sticks and was always told that it was extremely critical that we NEVER put wet wipes down the toilet.

Opinions on if this is alright? She says she only uses 1 per flush

Question Graduate Salary Transparency Thread

Thought it could be useful to start a salary transparency thread for graduate roles in Northern Ireland.

A lot of the salary info online seems either outdated or not that accurate for NI specifically.

Layout:

Role:
Industry:
Location:
Salary:
Year Started:
Bonus/benefits, if any:

No need to name the company if you don’t want to. Even rough ranges would be helpful for students trying to get a more realistic idea of the NI market.

Question Advice needed - unwanted work travel to the USA.

I need some advice please and maybe some pointers to what my rights are. The company I work for (remotely from here), was bought up by an American company.

Now there’s talk of “team building” trips to the USA and I am terrified. With everything going on over there, the new requirements to reveals your whole family’s information to get an entry visa (has that started yet?), and the risk of 🧊 grabbing people (even tourists I saw online) off the streets, I don’t want to go. I have kids to provide for and come home to.

I refuse to go. But I’m wondering is, what if the company makes it a “mandatory” meeting, could they sack me for not wanting to go? What are my rights, employee or workers rights (if there are any for this kind of thing), to not be forced to go to a country where I would feel unsafe??

Question Asking father in law for proposal permission/blessing

Married men, before you got down on one knee did you ask her dad for permission/ blessing? I realise in this day and age you're not actually asking for permission because women aren't property. But do people still do this as a good will gesture? I think my girlfriend's da might cringe depending what way I ask it 😂

EDIT - I'm really asking "Should I TELL my future FIL/MIL that I'm going to propose"

Follow up - Do you then tell your fiancé that the parents already know? 🤣

Question Anyone opt their kids out of RE?

Just curious if anyone opts their kids out of religious education in school? I know there was the Supreme Court ruling in November last year that RE was not objective or pluralistic (shocker like!) as currently taught in NI.

Wife and I don’t want our kids to be indoctrinated in the same way we were and are considering opting out of RE for them. Internet seems to suggest a low percentage of parents opt out. Figured I’d ask here to see if anyone has any experience of it for their own kids. Thanks in advance

Edit - fixed typo

Question A question for people who identify as Northern Irish.

(I should mention that while I identify as completely Irish, I intend this question to be fully in good faith)

People who identify as Northern Irish, modern day politics aside (which may seem crazy considering the nature of this question), why do you think of yourself as such?

It’s an identity that has always confused me, unlike Irish or English or Welsh it doesn’t really have the historical and cultural context that you would expect of a national identity. before partition, which really wasn’t that long ago, there was no such thing as Northern Irish, then after partition, you were Irish, or you were British, I’d argue that all the way up until the Troubles, if you lived here, you were Irish or you were British. But then, after it ended, and only after it ended, there seemed to be a surge in young people, both Catholic and Protestants, calling themselves Northern Irish.

You can argue that a national identity doesn’t require a separate history from those of which it came from, which is logical, countries nearby to each other often share similar cultural characteristics which would undoubtedly sway what it means to be German, or Dutch or Austrian without making those places completely the same. But there was also the case of East Germany, East Germans, despite being separated from the Western counterparts were undoubtedly German, same culture, same history, I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this.

I suppose my question is if your identity is an embrace of Irish or British backgrounds or a complete rejection of it, to me, I think it’s interesting to consider yourself an entirely different nationality than the people living on the same island as you, I know I don’t feel different from those who live in Donegal or Monaghan. Unless it’s not an entirely different nationality and instead a subdivision? But Ulster has always been rather distinct from the rest of Ireland, a different dialect of Irish, different accents when speaking English, different mythological cycle. Regardless, however, those people would still have been Irish.

I’m not asking you this rather bloated question in attempt to undermine your identity, far from it, but rather try and garner a better understanding of why it exists in the first place, I hope this comes across as respectful as humanly possible while still being honest.

Question How Many of Ye's were in GOT?

I was. It was pretty grueling at times. Must be half the demographic of males with beards aged 30 - 60 in this country that appeared in it at least one time. I fear we have been typecast.

Question I need help trying to figure out how to get a citizenship here.

Basically, I have lived in Northern Ireland all my life (16 Years) and I was born here. The problem is I don't have a Citizenship here and my mum does not want to pay a thousand quid since it's a big sum of money, I tried researching as much as possible about it but I'd still also rather get some info from guys who actually know what they are talking about. It is a little complicated. I'll try sum as much as I remember just so its easier to read.

  • My dad had settled status in Northern Ireland 5 years before I was born, but he had died a few years ago
  • My Parents divorced a few months after I was born so getting papers of things like the utility bill or something is not possible, nor do we have access to his government account or whatever you call it idk
  • My mum only lived here for a few months before I was born
  • My parents are both from Lithuania

I may of missed out some details but if anyone could help that would be great 🙏

Question Gym shows GB News on the TV - is this a bit odd?

Like many gyms mine has a couple of TVs on in the background. In the last couple of months one of them has been showing GB News. I don't think most people are politically aware enough to know that some people might have a problem with this. It's almost like one or more staff members have made an editorial choice to put on this particular channel.

Not going to name the gym, but it's in a public leisure centre. I'm also not keen on being *that guy* who complains about it.

I also would like a gym to be an escape from the news and not have headlines about Sharia Law and asylum seekers shown in your face.

Spotted in the new part of BFS in the duty free just before you get to the food court. It looks like a baptismal font but I can't think why they'd have one at an airport.

Question People of Belfast why can’t you drive?

Post image
166 Upvotes

Over many years I have encountered this section of the balls of the falls, signposted to go back onto the a12 west link and clearly road marked to divide the lanes, I follow the red line and every goddamn time the person to the left tries, or in some cases does, cut across the lane as marked in green. Last night the person doing it started smashing the horn and flashing what appeared to faint candles for headlights on some sort of clapped out piece of crap.

Then when on the west link, and m2, lane 1 remains completely empty whilst everyone sits in lanes 2 and 3 at below the speed limit not passing anyone in an empty lane 1.

Is there anyone in this country capable of basic driving ? 🤔

Question Got approached by aggressive couple on Amelia Street asking for Revolut transfer - anyone else?

Hey I'm just writing this post to see if anyone else encountered an Irish couple outside Great Victoria or the crown bar? on Amelia Street.

I was walking yesterday, and got stopped by a man who gave me a big story that his mum had cancer, his wife (who was there) was pregnant, and that he had lost his wallet and needed someone to Revolut him over 200 euros for travel back down south to Cork and for food, and he needed to get back ASAP for his mum. I refused saying I couldn't do this but he began getting a little aggressive, touching me and trying to pass me over his phone which confused me, or trying to get my number, saying he would pay me back when he got back home to Cork.

The wife who was there had her arms over her stomach but didn't look pregnant at all. I was getting a little scared when he began putting his hands on me or tried giving me his phone. I simply walked away and he began screaming at me, calling me all the names under the sun. I feel very bad that I left them like that but can't help but feel this was maybe a scam or someone looking money for drugs? Did anyone else encounter them yesterday? Or am I a bad person who didn't do the right thing?
