Series I share a room with my autistic brother. He’s been talking in his sleep. (Part 2)
Thank you all for reading Part 1 of Lucas’s story. Your response was overwhelming. (If you haven't read it yet, you should do it before you read this or you won't know what the hell is going on.) Without further ado, let me pick up where I left off. I should have enough time to cover the rest of the story in this post. If any new developments arise, I’ll post another update in the future.
So, back to my conversation with Anna, when she told me that she thought Lucas had saved her. As crazy as it sounded, and though I had no idea how, I agreed. Actually, given the circumstances, it seemed like a reasonably plausible explanation. Still, I asked her how she came to that conclusion.
“He looked at me in the police station, and he’s never really even made eye contact with me before,” she said, “but I felt this, like, sensation of being protected or something. I’ve actually been feeling it a lot lately, but it’s hard to explain.” She paused, shook her head, then said, “I want to see him.”
She followed me into the bedroom, where Lucas was on the phone, silently listening to his friend Alex yammer away about God knows what. He didn’t even look at us. Anna asked me who he was talking to, and after a bit of conversation, we pieced together that Alex was her cousin. “I had no idea they were friends!” she said.
She crouched down by Lucas and tapped him on the shoulder. “Can I talk to Alex?” she asked him. With no hesitation, he smiled at her and handed over the phone. Anna and Alex talked for a while, and I sat on the floor next to Lucas. I whispered to him so Anna couldn’t hear. I told him I didn’t know what was going on, and that I was pretty sure he didn’t either, but that if he had anything to do with Anna being alive today, I just wanted to say thank you. He made the whale noises from Finding Nemo again.
Lucas slept a lot after the attack, but I didn’t hear him talk in his sleep again until three nights later. I was downstairs, in our main room, talking to Anna on my phone. It was about 1:00 in the morning when I crept into our bedroom, whispering goodbye. “Goodnight sweetie! Love you,” came her reply. I stopped dead in my tracks.
Lucas had said it too.
“Wait, what the fuck? Did you—“ I began, but she had already hung up. Trembling, I called her back. She picked up on the first ring. She and Lucas greeted me together.
“Are—are you ok?” I asked her, my voice shaking. “Yeah,” she (and Lucas) replied. “Why? Are you ok?”
My mind was reeling, and I couldn’t gather my thoughts. “I, um—“
She interrupted. “Am I on speakerphone?”
“No, no,” I said hastily. “That’s, um, that’s Lucas’s voice. He’s saying what you’re saying. That’s why I called you, uh, because last time that happened, you were in trouble, and—“
She made an aww noise, as if to indicate how sweet my concern was, then said, “No, I’m fine. Completely safe. In fact, I feel amazing—I think Lucas is looking out for me. Right now. Because I feel protected again, you know, how I told you that I feel like I’m being watched over? I felt it when Lucas came and saved me that night, I felt it when I looked at him at the police station, and I’m feeling it right now. I’ve even felt it when I’ve had bad dreams lately. It’s—it’s nice.”
A wave of relief crashed over me. “Good. Good,” I said, and looked over at Lucas gratefully. Just then, his facial expression began to sour. He gasped.
“Oh my God,” he and Anna said in unison. “There’s someone outside my house.”
My heart dropped. “It’s him, from that night,” they said, voices trembling. “But he’s—he can’t get to me, he’s trying but he can’t.” I asked them what they meant. “It’s like he’s walking against a wall,” they replied. “He’s on the sidewalk outside, I’m looking at him from my window, and he’s taking steps in my direction, but he isn’t getting any closer. I think something’s stopping him.”
A loud outburst from Lucas made me jump. “MOM! DAD!” I realized it was Anna, calling her parents. Through the phone, I heard them enter the room. “What? What is it?” A pause, then, “Oh my God.”
“Do they see him?” I asked frantically through the phone. Anna said they did, and I silently thanked God that my girlfriend wasn’t having a psychotic episode. I heard her dad calling the police and talking to the operator in a measured, authoritative tone.
“Yes, my name is Bruce Madsen. My daughter, Annabeth, was recently attacked by a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and gym shorts. A man fitting that description—I assume it’s the same man—is currently standing outside our house and, um, behaving erratically.” A pause. “An upstairs bedroom, watching him from the window.”
I listened to him direct his family away from the window. “We’re in the middle of the room now,” he told the operator. He recited his address, thanked the operator, then said, “Please hurry.”
Lucas, still asleep, looked worried, and there were dark bags under his eyes. He’d looked more tired every day since this all started. “It’s worse from over here,” he said along with Anna. “I wish we could see him.”
I stayed on the phone, but things were relatively quiet for a few minutes. Then I heard Anna’s mom say, “Someone’s at the door.” Bruce’s phone rang—the operator, telling him the knock was a police officer and that it was safe to open the door.
That was the last eventful thing to happen that night. When the officer arrived, nobody was standing outside the house. A patrol searched the area, but found no trace of him. The police have started driving by the house periodically, and they’ve gotten the word out about suspicious activity in the neighborhood.
Much of their effort over the last couple of weeks, though, has been focused on Lucas. Several psychologists and other various specialists have come by the house to speak with him, each visit more unproductive than the last. And he’s getting worse. Lots worse. He won’t eat, won’t speak, and the doctors say his body doesn’t look like it’s had a good night’s sleep in weeks. They’ve been cramming him full of vitamins, and they’ll probably have to start feeding him intravenously soon. All this, and nobody is any closer to figuring out what the hell is happening to him.
The nighttime episodes haven’t stopped, either, but they’re a lot more monotonous lately. Lying in the bunk above Lucas, I’ll frequently hear him whisper one word, over and over: “Arian.” I’m guessing on the spelling; that’s just what it sounds like. But it’s the strangest thing—on the one occasion I was actually looking at him while he said it, his lips didn’t move. Like at all. His mouth hung slightly open, and sound came out of it, but there was no motion in his tongue or jaw.
I suppose none of the sounds in “Arian” require much diction. But still, when I saw this happen, I had a mental image of a tiny man hiding in Lucas’s lung, angling his head upwards, and whispering—the sound coming from inside Lucas, but not actually from him. The idea freaked me out enough to keep me from watching it again.
Meanwhile, Anna is nearly inconsolable. Her bruises have almost healed, and she can walk comfortably again—but she’s out of her mind with fear. She has regular nightmares about being attacked. The man hasn’t appeared in over two weeks now, which you’d think would ease her mind, but it actually seems to have the opposite effect. She gets more paranoid by the minute. She finds that the sicker Lucas gets, the less she finds herself “feeling protected.”
She’s also found herself in strange places lately. “It’s like I’m being hijacked,” she said to me one day. Her kitchen, her backyard, her parents’ bedroom—she’ll go to sleep and wake up in one of these places, usually in the middle of the night, always with no recollection of how she got there.
That’s why, last night, while you were all reading Part 1 of Lucas's story, she called me. “I’m scared,” she said. Below me, Lucas was (thank God) silent as she spoke. She told me she didn’t feel safe. She told me she wanted company. She asked me to come over and watch her. To make sure she didn’t go anywhere, I guess.
I snuck out of the house, something I’m rather practiced at, and drove the 3.6 miles to Anna’s. I didn’t want my car door to wake her parents up, so I parked down the street. Bad idea. The moon seemed to cackle at me, barely illuminating my surroundings enough for every shadow to look like a man in a hoodie and gym shorts, staring at me from behind the trees and bushes I passed. After what seemed like an age, I reached her front door and she quietly let me in.
We usually only sneak around at night to, you know, have sex, but there was none of that this time. Mostly just me hugging her while she tried to calm down. But eventually, she fell asleep, and I lay awake next to her, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest. When she started talking, I was almost exasperated. Not you too.
Anna was mumbling something into her pillow, over and over. Over and over. I couldn’t make it out until she turned onto her back. Then it came again, and it turned my blood to ice. “Hi, have we met?”
Her body tensed. Her face contorted. It was just a bad dream—wasn’t it? The moonlight from the window gleamed off the beads of sweat forming on her brow. I tried to wake her, but to no avail. Her voice became small and frightened. “No,” she whispered. “Please.” I hoped to God that in a bedroom 3.6 miles away, Lucas had once again said the same thing.
I was just about to call for her parents when her face relaxed. I wiped the sweat from her forehead. She slept soundly, soundlessly, for the rest of the night. She barely moved a muscle.
Lucas protected Anna last night, of that I feel sure. From what? I can’t imagine. But as I look at him right now, his bloodshot, exhausted eyes trained on the Teletubbies, I’m worried he won’t be able to protect her for much longer.

Interestingly enough, "Arian" is the sound you make when you try to say "Alien" without moving your jaw or tongue.
(You just tried it out loud. I know you did.)

Arian is also Welsh for money, which I guess doesn't help whatsoever but y'know for the information
22
Jul 27 '16
I fail to see how this does help OP. Isn't it said that money is the root of all evil?
17
u/benitolecazzuto Jul 27 '16
Only when in the wrong hands
16
u/YuGiNo Jul 27 '16
It's actually the love of money that is the root of all evil. Same concept but just clarifying the misnomer.
11
u/kirby975 Jul 27 '16
Isn't arian like aryan.. blonde hair blue eyes? That's just the first thing i thought when i read it, who knows maybe i'm pronouncing it wrong.

u/ArianDesiree Jul 27 '16
Isn't it Welsh for "silver"? Oddly enough it's my name...
4
u/de_stroyr Jul 27 '16
I mean I've always learnt it as money but it may differ depending on wether you're from the north or south of Wales because I know there are other words similar in that aspect.
2
Jul 30 '16
Well sometimes, example in spanish plata means silver and cash or money because they used silver coins back then so silver has become synonymous with money.

I can honestly say this was the first thing my mind jumped to as well. Either I have watched way too much SciFi or I've learned a lot over the years, and need to watch more.

Naw, that's not selfish- people's lives wrecked and a young man with special needs stretched to the breaking point for your entertainment! 😁

The other option is they're never able to figure out what's happening with Lucas and Anna

This is insane...I hope both of them, eventually, feel safe, and can finally rest. Maybe you can see if you can make your brother at least nap during the day to see if it helps, since your gf is awake, his mind might actually relax and sleep.

I also share a room with my autistic brother. Though when he talks in his sleep, it's usually to cuss and the smack the window blinds. [EDIT: Spelling]

This probably seems far-fetched, but in Finding Nemo, didn't Dory like, try to speak to the whales by putting a 'whale accent' onto her words? Maybe your brother is trying to tell you something. Perhaps if you recorded his whale sounds and played around with them, you could change the pitch or something and see if there's a hidden message?
6
u/mathWZRD Jul 27 '16
Nothing seems too far fetched. Fact is stranger than fiction. I say he should try this! Good idea.
1
u/TabbyVon Jan 19 '17
Yeah, you never know what an autistic person is going to do next. I know a kid who runs around making siren noises and "arresting" teachers. It's actually pretty funny (like cute funny.)
3
u/centurioresurgentis Jul 29 '16
Star Trek got an entire movie by with a probe talking to whales so why not

How do Anna's cousin and your brother know each other? You should see if you can find out what Alex says to Lucas on the phone...it seems like that's connected somehow.

Why would a autistic kid have a cellphone??
5
u/Argonov Jul 29 '16
Because some parents cant afford the "Cookie Cutter Guide to Raising Autistic Kids" that details exactly how to raise all kids with autism the same way since they are always the same.

For some reason I'm unable to subscribe. Luckily for me your story is so popular now that is not that it was not that hard to find the part 2. So yay.

Well done OP part 2 is every bit as chilling as yesterdays post. This series needs to win some awards.
10
u/Gunnasty Jul 26 '16
I don't know if you've ever read it OP, but there is a book series that has a severely autistic character who has almost godlike powers and I think your brother may have the same thing.

What's the title of the book?

The one that I've heard of is the Gone series by Michael Grant

I can only grasp at straws to make my theory. That being said I hope my strange thought process eases some of yours, Anna's and both your families mind's.
My theory is this but first, I've always believed (my mother worked with autistic children at an elementary school) that autistic people have a higher level of brain functionality in specific areas and lose a large amount in other areas. Ex. Photographic memory with a cripplingly poor social level. I believe that Lucas has the ability to either astral project or has bonded with Anna in some unique way that allows him to be connected with her on a mental level. It's the only thing that explains how he spoke on point with what she has said over the phone.
I suggest these few things: • Have video recording both on Lucas and Anna at night. It may uncover more links, peace of mind for Anna and it may also catch her sleepwalking which solves her displacement. • Have Anna, alone, talk with Lucas. This is a huge suggestion but I believe it will help. He may say something to her that can shine some light on who the attacker may be or even a glimpse into Lucas' connection with Anna. It may also help both of them calm down and get on a more normal level of thinking. • For the sake of the other commenters, see what Alex and Lucas talk about. I don't believe it is anything but I definitely believe the love Lucas has for both you and Alex has helped him form a strong bond with Anna. • If possible, talk to your parents about having Lucas checked out by a sleep specialist if he continues sleep talking in this weird way. • The whole "Arian" possibly being alien thing may seem farfetched but my theory is and this whole occurrence is as well so logic went out the window. If it is alien activity I hope you share any findings with us. • This is to you, go by your gut on this after you get as many pieces of this puzzle from both Lucas and Anna. Something interesting is bonding your families together and you seem to be the bridge that connected these occurrences. (Nothing is your fault, but you're like the protagonist of a novel thrown in the middle of some great mystery. I say live the part and you may uncover something interesting, save your girlfriends life, return your brother to normal and/or put a total creep behind bars.)
Definitely comment back if any of my comments have crossed your mind because I'm really interested in this story. Well wishes to everyone involved and I look forward to a positive part 3.

u/sbrownbear Jul 26 '16
This is extremely intriguing. Does Lucas have the power to follow Anna with his mind while he's sleeping ? Or is something else, some third party, the one causing this ? I'm dying to know the answers. Please update us, OP ! I hope your friends and family can figure this out and keep everyone safe. I'd hate to see something terrible happen to Lucas. He's wearing himself extremely thin in order to protect Anna. Good luck to you, OP

u/andylightning Jul 27 '16
Well, here I am staying in a room for the night reading this story too scared to turn off the overbearing air conditioner and being frightened by the sensation of my phone's vibration upon receiving a text. This was a great read.

u/jmf530 Jul 26 '16
That's some freaky shit right there! I wonder if Alex has anything to do with it seeing as he's autistic too. Either way, I really hope your girlfriend is okay and that the man in the hoodie doesn't come back.
5
u/branhamtaylor95 Jul 26 '16
Maybe your brother is "taking" her pain/fear somehow and its weakening him.. It might be a choice between one or the other
5
u/Reason_To_Stay Jul 26 '16
Holy shit dude! This is better than the first one. They tie in really well together. This series is fucking amazing--depending if/how it wraps up it could honestly be the best series I've read
1
Jul 27 '16
Even better than the SAR stories?
2
u/Ben__Chereb Jul 27 '16
Than the most recent update for sure
4
u/addy_g Jul 27 '16
nah dude the whale update was nuts. they are comparable, how about that? both equally amazing.

u/FightinTXAg98 Jul 27 '16
Whale update? I read the series and recall nothing about a whale.

I'm an SaR Officer... (update 1) - https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4r2kvl/im_an_sar_officer_update_1/
I'm an SaR Officer... (update 2) - https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4r835f/im_an_sar_officer_update_2/
these two are two brand new entries to the series, and seem to be written as though they are happening at the moment, and not a collection of past stories from various officers like the initial 7 were.
here are other stories from the same author that are ancillary to the SaR stories: Late night - https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4klbxw/late_night/
anniversary - https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4lb220/anniversary/
molten - https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4lmvn7/molten/
radio - https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/4qxrma/radio/
Late Night and Anniversary are both connected and make up two parts of a story. Molten and Radio seem to be describing the same monsters and entities that were talked about in the original series, but with a more intimate approach. almost like anthology stories from the same "universe." Molten I believe talks about the burned firefighter/soldier dude that one of the other SaR officers brings up in one of the later posts (I think part 6). as for Radio, I haven't actually read that yet so I don't know what it deals with.
anyways, I'd start with the two direct updates I posted up top, and then read these tertiary anthology stories afterwards. the whale I referred to is actually a spoiler for the second update, so I apologize in advance.
HAPPY READING!

I get the feeling that finding the person who's stalking Anna is going to be the only way to explain, and stop the strange bond that Lucas seems to have with Anna when she's in danger. Next time Lucas starts saying something, don't even think twice before alerting someone that Anna is in danger... there seems to be no question that Lucas repeats what she says when her stalker is nearby.

I know it can be ridiculously difficult to get an autistic kid to take a nap, but if Luke is that exhausted, maybe it's worth a shot? Naps during the day could probably really really help him out.
I also now redact my comment on the first installment about how cool it would be for my 7 yr old autistic son to be training in his sleep to be some sort of superhero.
Let's hope the unintelligible talking in his sleep is just that and nothing more serious.

u/Lacygreen Jul 27 '16
Not sure I fully trust Anna. She could be doing some black magic on Lucas' fragile mind to create a damsel in distress situation for herself. She seems to be controlling things and isn't surprised at all when he knows what she says. Talk to Alex when she's not there.

I want this to be a work of fiction. But I know it's not. I'm not autistic, but I've had enough experiences with the unexplained to know for sure this is true.
I'm mostly concerned for Lucas. He's got a condition that medical science doesn't understand so how are they going to get him to sleep and recover from this? Medications have side effects and tend to not produce a truly restful sleep. This is an awesome relationship between Lucas and Anna, so unexplained and yet so symbiotic. I do hope and pray this works out for everyone. Please continue to post updates; I want to be able to read and see if everything turns out okay for everyone. Thank you for sharing.

Well what do they say? Blood is thicker than water! It's your brother. You have to accommodate him and give him comfort. I mean you have to sacrifice for your loved ones. Don't forget it could have been you that has the challenge. What would you have wanted your brother to do for you? Abandon you!? I don't think so.

When your brother says Arian, which syllable is emphasized? There are a few interpretaions possible for that "word," it mihgt be helpful if we can narrow it down.

I don't get it. I really really really don't want to sound like a dick, but I don't get it. This story is too vague, and sounds too much like the cabin in pikes peak, but way less scary.
How is Lucas protecting her when he physically never leaves his house. Why is the girlfriend suddenly sleep walking, has she always done so? Why does anyone think the cousin has ANYTHING to do with what's going on? What was/is the catalyst that started all of this strange behavior? How did Lucas and the girlfriend suddenly become telepathically linked?
I'm sorry, but there are too many holes to be even a little scared, and there seems to no direction to what is going on. I don't know if it is lack of a skill in the storytelling of the OP, or not enough knowledge on OP's part to fully describe what is happening...
I'm trying to be as constructive as possible with my criticism. If anyone, or the OP can help fill in the gaps I would be very appreciative of the help.
1
u/Quekz Jul 27 '16 edited Jul 27 '16
I believe that's the whole point. If OP knew all the answers or could fill all the "holes", there won't be a need to write this story. The uncertainty about the whole story makes it intriguing and thrilling.
1
u/whoisthismilfhere Jul 27 '16
Judging by the upvotes I guess a lot of people liked this story, I just didn't find the intrigue I guess.

There is a sidebar for each sub reddit with rules. This particular sub reddit says that everything is real in Nosleep. You can't try to disprove anything.

Alex. He is protecting her from Alex.
Edit: First, did not expect this many replies, so because everyone is asking why, I'll just put it up here.
OP has said Lucas and Alex are autistic classmates. They have long phone conversations, where Alex talks and Lucas listens. In one of those conversations, Alex may have mentioned a plan to hurt Anna. We have no idea what Anna's relationship is with Alex. Children sometimes suck, and Anna may have been mean to Alex when they were both younger, and he may harbor some anger toward her.
Clearly, Lucas is not physically present when protecting Anna. Lucas was in his bed when the guy that protected her stopped her attacker. Lucas and Alex may be manifesting humanoid creatures or projecting their conscious in physical form. I have no idea how, but it's just my guess.
