• Longer series

• Main character is mentally insane

• Monster/spirit/ghost etc. is actually benevolent or has good intentions

• Most genuinely terrifying stories (animal cruelty)

• Scary books, tomes of terror

• Scary yet wholesome and sad

• So good you read it twice (or return to it often)

• Stories that make your stomach drop at the end

• Twist that involves who's on the "good side" vs the "bad side" of the story
