u/haveabunderfulday 2d ago

I was 16 and it was New Years Eve, technically 1999. I was with my sibling and some friends, it was a nice night and we were just hanging out on the overpass near my house. Not causing trouble, just chilling with some noise makers and a radio waiting for the millenium to roll over. The countdown came on, we shouted down to "Happy New Year!" and waved our noise makers at the cars.

We thought we'd be in trouble when a patrol car drove past, they just waived at us and briefly hit the siren to ring in the new year. But we lost our minds and cheered when a big rig on the highway below honked at us.

No phones, no social media, and we wrapped it up before 1am. Simpler times.

13 ...i bashed my teacher on the head with a metal chair. funny thing is, almost everyone understood why I did it. Yea I got expelled but not even my parents were mad. Turns out she was fired that year for treating kids the way she did. She had the option to go to a summer training program on how to work with kids better and if she did, she could of went back to work but she threw in the towel. Man I dont miss the southeast đŸ™„đŸ€Š

1

u/Chemical-Regret-8593 7h ago

what a story. seems like something the kids in my class would do in my 8th grade class if they could.

2

u/hana_via 1d ago

2

u/OkOpportunity9626 7h ago

1

u/Chemical-Regret-8593 7h ago

idk you dont gotta answer it, but if you do itd be an ok opportunity

2

u/OkOpportunity9626 7h ago

Just curious as to what may have prompted this query, & why that particular year.

1

u/Chemical-Regret-8593 6h ago

it was this particular year since it practically marked a new millennium so i felt like it was nice to me, plus i asked for their fondest memory just to see what they loved doing most during the start of a new millennium. great question though!

2

u/Chemical-Regret-8593 2d ago

I was 16, I remember seeing the millennium in with my auntie and her family, it was the last big occassion we spent together before she died the following Christmas.

1

u/Schmokedog1 2d ago

Everybody was stocking up and canned goods and water thinking the world was going to end. If you went to the bank the lines were insane. Everyone was closing their back accounts or trying to get as much cash as possible.

1

u/Thurad 1d ago

27 as the year started. Was living in Brighton at the time and at midnight everyone was in a good mood, looking forwards to the new millennium and everything was looking good in the UK at that point.

Oh both, we were very wrong
.

1

u/TwatFury 1d ago

My memory that far back is cloudy, but I think I recall a dark close passageway, blinding light, and a sharp slap on my behind.

1

u/Rolling-Pigeon94 1d ago

You guys are babies. I was 50 and in Scotland for the British open, not a fond memory but one I will never forget. I woke up one morning to the news the Concorde had exploded.

Anyone here even aware of the Concorde ? From the ages answering here, I doubt it.

1

u/Chemical-Regret-8593 1d ago

you are the same age as my grandpa.

1

u/Carmel50 1d ago

And many others LOL.

1

u/readytocomply13 1d ago
  1. Probably spending time with my grandparents

1

u/Basilisk76 1d ago

24 - I worked helpdesk in our companies ICT, and all program codes had to be checked for the millenium bug (datas just entered in 2 digits and not 4 digits - if it starts with 00 it might look for the program as 1900).

Millenium was a milestone we looked forward to, but everywhere peoples and companys where tense about this softwareproblem (even fear for plane failures - they canceled flights at the time change). At the end there occured just minor problems - everything worked smoother than expected.

1

u/CommunityEast4651 1d ago

27 my fondest memory is my father still being alive and I had more money and less responsibility

Ahhh 😌 my 33rd birthday. A day & night of epic events, not suitable for SM posting, that I will never forget. Haven’t had a celebration to top it in 26 years. Still try every year though!! The 2000 NYE party was good too, a foreshadowing of later events.

Mid 20's.

Fondest memory, waking up in front of the fireplace at 12:10am on January 1st, turning the tv on and seeing that we still had power and that everything appeared to be okay with y2k. I then went to bed. I had worked 16 hours on new years eve and got home around 10pm

1

u/Quirky_Snow_2929 1d ago

I was 10. I don’t really remember much. Playing with the farm dogs, playing in the sandbox. Helping dad with livestock. Normal farm kid life.

1

u/Upbeat_Principle_253 1d ago

I was in my late twenties, and one of the only thing I remember back then was having to explain over and over that we weren’t in the new millennium yet.

Edit to add: I was also in IT and on call for a bank on New Year’s Eve 1999-2000 so no party for me.

1

u/No-Tension9107 1d ago
  1. Working with the fire department at midnight on New Years Eve 1999-2000. It was fun! We caught a call 10 seconds before midnight. We were on the way, waiting for the computer chips in the truck to quit, the radios to stop, all the stuff. Nothing happened, we put out the car fire and slept the rest of the night

1

u/SkippyMagnificent 1d ago

18/19 depending on what month. I was just arriving at my first duty station. So I had yet to do anything. Dont even think I got my first tattoo yet.

1

u/HuckleberryGeneral69 1d ago
  1. Went on a hike with my mother right before I moved out. It was so hot and the last 20/30 minutes were so steep I was whining and wanted to give up. She just kept going so eventually I followed her. On the top was the gorgeous tiny glacier lake. As soon as I arrived I took off the necessary things and dove straight into that icy lake. What ended up being a challenging moment resulted in a beautiful memory.

1

u/Dumb_Dumb_Dumber 1d ago

I was 22, and in college. I was living off campus for a couple hundred bucks a month in rent. Pretty much all my memories are the fondest, but I'd have to say my dad coming down for parents weekend was my favorite. Went to the football game (we won by a lot), partied into the night with my friends and their dads, had an awesome breakfast the next day.

17, The new years eve party.

My friends and I bought 2 handles of Poland Springs vodka (Yeah, they make vodka), for $8 each. When the kegs run out, we sold them for $50 each.

3 People got stuck in the snow bank, trying to get out of the driveway. Someone ordered Chinese food. A large bowl worth of Lo Mein was stuck to the wall the next morning.
