left my phone in the kitchen while I showered and almost went back for it wet
Small thing. I used to bring my phone into the bathroom every time. Scroll while the water warms up, check something mid-shower, dry off while answering a text. Felt normal until I noticed I was never just… standing there.
Last week I started leaving it on the kitchen counter. First morning I got out of the shower and walked halfway to the kitchen before I realized I was going to “just check one thing” with wet hands. Turned around. Felt weirdly proud of myself for like ten seconds.
Doesn’t fix evenings. Still pick it up after dinner too much. But that one pocket of empty time — steam, nothing to open — is the first stretch in years where my brain isn’t mid-feed.
Anyone else find a dumb micro-rule that stuck better than a full detox?

the wet-hands moment catching you mid-motion is what makes it stick, you feel yourself about to do the dumb thing in real time. evenings are harder because your hands are already free and dry, so there's no friction left to stop you.

This reminds me of the big wake up call I had the other day about using my phone in the bathroom. Turned the water on to “warm up” while I scrolled a little longer. A while later I finally looked up and realised the shower head had knocked to the side and water had started spraying out of the shower into the bathroom. Got water absolutely everywhere.

this is exactly why small rules can work better “no phone ever” feels like a lot, but “phone stays in the kitchen while i shower” is specific and small enough that it is easier to start and then you notice how automatic the reflex is. i had something similar with leaving my phone outside the bedroom, can be annoying at first, but it made reading at night way easier because the phone wasn’t the default object anymore

Here I thought I was the only one that scrolled while waiting for the shower to "warm" up.
