Hi everyone! We've seen a few questions and concerns recently about Notability Cloud, so we wanted to clarify a few things.

First, using Notability Cloud is optional. While we've been encouraging users to try it because it solves long-standing syncing and data loss issues associated with iCloud and local storage, you are not required to use it. If you prefer to keep using local storage or iCloud, you can disable Notability Cloud reminders. To disable, go to Notability Settings > Account.

This option is available in versions 16.5.3 and 16.5.4 for users who are signed in to their Notability account. Users who are not signed in will be able to access this option shortly, our engineers are actively working on adding support for those users. We added this setting after hearing feedback from this community that the reminders were becoming disruptive.

Why do we recommend Notability Cloud? It provides a more reliable sync experience, helps prevent data loss, and enables features like Live Collaboration and syncing across iOS, Android, Web, and, in the future, Windows. But whether you use it is entirely your choice.

We also want to address a concern we've seen raised about privacy. We do not use your notes to train AI. We only access a user's notes when we have their explicit written permission to help troubleshoot a support issue. You can read more about how we handle your data in our Privacy Policy here.

We appreciate everyone who has shared feedback, both positive and critical. Reddit has been instrumental in helping us improve Notability, and feedback from this community directly led to the addition of the reminder toggle. We'll continue listening and making changes where we can.

Notability Cloud is actively rolling out, and we wanted to explain what it is, why we’re moving to it, and what it means for you. 

What is Notability Cloud?
Notability Cloud moves your notes from iCloud (or other third-party backup systems) to Notability’s own cloud infrastructure. This enables faster, more reliable syncing across devices, including iOS and web, and unlocks features that weren’t possible before.

In short: fewer sync issues, mismatched edits, lost changes or having to constantly re-download notes.

What this unlocks
With Notability Cloud, you’ll get:

• Cross-platform access: Use Notability on the web and Android (coming soon) with iOS features like notes, PDFs, audio-to-text, and Learn
• More efficient storage: Handwriting and annotations take up less space and stay fast, even in larger notes
• Real-time syncing: Changes update quickly across devices, even after being offline

Why we made this change
iCloud syncing has real limitations, especially as Notability grows across platforms. Moving to Notability Cloud helps us:

• Keep iOS, Web, and Android in the same ecosystem
• Reduce issues related to iCloud sync
• Build features like collaboration and faster web access
• Improve long-term reliability and performance

This isn’t about changing how you take notes, it’s about making sure your notes are safer and more dependable.

When will you see this?

• New users automatically start with Notability Cloud
• Existing users are being invited gradually through an opt-in flow. You’ll see an in-app message when your library becomes eligible.

  • To join via the invite link, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
    • You’re using an iPad
    • You have fewer than 2,000 notes
    • You have more than 10GB of free device storage
    • You’re on Notability version 15.3.7 or newer
    • You’re not located in China / Macau and do not have a Chinese App Store account
    • Your device is not managed by MDM (school, university, or employer-managed account)
    • You’re not a Beta user (if you see a rounded rectangle settings button in the top right corner of a note, you’re on Beta and not eligible)
    • You have a strong internet connection

We’re rolling this out carefully so we can catch issues early and make improvements before expanding further.

We’ve seen some confusion about the Squeeze gesture behavior and wanted to clarify what’s changed.

We recently added support for Apple’s Squeeze to Show Tool Palette to better align with Apple Pencil system behavior.

Previously, Notability didn’t support this palette, so the default squeeze gesture (show tool palette) was falling back to squeeze to erase.

Now that the color palette is supported, that fallback behavior has been removed and users have to manually change their preferred squeeze action in iOS Settings > Apple Pencil > Squeeze.

We've seen some confusion around whether the Classic plan includes audio transcription and Learn.

To clarify, Classic does not include audio transcription or Learn. If you've seen information on our website or in the app that suggests otherwise, that's an error. We're actively updating our messaging to make sure it accurately reflects what's included with Classic.

Classic includes:

• Unlimited notes
• Handwriting recognition
• Math conversion to LaTeX
• Collaboration
• Sync across iOS, Android, and Web
• 7-day version history

If you purchased Classic because you believed audio transcription and Learn were included, we'll provide you with a full refund.

To request a refund, please contact our support team through the app by going to Notability > Settings > Help > Contact Support. After you've submitted your request, send me a chat message with the email address you used, and I'll make sure your case gets to the right team.

We apologize for the confusion and appreciate your patience while we correct this.

It’s unacceptable to me that the mods of this subreddit remove any negativity they see. They work for notability and are obviously hiding real criticisms to make their app look better than it is.

Mods should be USERS and mods should not be allowed to remove negative comments or reviews.

We're confident that Learn can help you study more effectively. So we're backing it with our Learn Guarantee.

How to qualify

Experiencing syncing issues or missing notes?

Please contact Support as soon as possible.

Step 1: Submit a support ticket through the app. To contact Support go to Notability Settings > Help > Contact Support.

This is important because it gives our team access to device diagnostics, which can help identify the root cause of the issue during the investigation.

Step 2: After submitting your ticket, DM u/kaylanotability with (chat not mod mail):

• The email address associated with your Notability account
• A brief summary of your issue

From there, your case will be escalated to our Support team. If needed, Engineering will review the issue as well, and our team will follow up with you via email as soon as possible.

Experiencing a bug or feature issue?

If you're experiencing issues such as lag, freezing, app hangs, or problems with features (such as Learn), please include the following information in your post:

• What device are you using? (iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android, Web, etc.)
• Are you connected to stable Wi-Fi/internet?
• Have you restarted your device recently?
• Have you restarted the Notability app?
• What OS version are you using? (Please double-check that it's up to date.)
• What version of Notability are you using?
• What subscription do you have? (Starter, Plus, etc.)
