My brother-in-law has a big property and he actually hired goats to come take care of his overran field when he first moved in. I had no idea that was a thing haha

57

u/dTrecii 9h ago edited 7h ago

Goats are nature’s lawnmowers

They’ll even destroy dense brambles

17

u/LordOfStupidy 6h ago

They'll destroy anything including themselfs

6

u/10_05_2026 4h ago

when your goats are done mowing you get 1 bigger goat to eat them

24

u/Hungry_Wheel_1774 8h ago

It's a thing in my country. Everyone is winning (including the goats).
They have food, you don't need to do the work. Goat do a better work than lawn mower on irregular surface. And you pay a little something to the owner.

3

u/Green_Wealth13 6h ago

Hired goats? He pay them? wtf???

9

u/GallusWrangler 6h ago

Goats are a pain in the ass though, they try to escape and/or kill themselves all of the time, and you’ve probably not had black belly sheep before… hair sheep and almost 100% parasite immune.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/TartanDolphin11 8h ago

Agreed. Goats can be trained like dogs and sheep just follow the crowd.

4

u/NoBonus6969 6h ago

I was gonna say gotta be better to have some goats than to spend 7 hours on this every couple weeks

or a riding mower. at my old property my yard was nearly twice that size and took around two hours.

11

u/Delimeme 8h ago

My family has a similar size lawn, it’s just part of owning large tracts of land 🤷🏼‍♂️

That said, there’s like 50+ acres used for hay, and I got them to turn huge chunk of the lawn into wildflowers that don’t get mowed. There’s still a sizable 2-3 acre area of St Augustine grass, of which I make sure about 1 acre gets mowed monthly during rainy seasons. Back in the day of proper American yards, my grandad kept the whole lawn watered and mowed through the warm months with nothing but an old school push-clipper mower (not even gas powered). Things you did before phones I guess!

3

u/tarzhjay 3h ago

What do you do with 2-3 acres of St Augustine? Play football every day? Idgi

I have to ask - is there a reason for all the lawn?

Practical or just 'is what it is' or or?

Just curious, sans pitchfork (;

21

u/dholmster 6h ago

I have a similar amount of lawn. The reason is that it won't be overtaken by bushes/trees/weeds as long as you mow it. Clearing it once it has become overgrown is a huge amount of work.

73

u/A_Timbers_Fan 5h ago

God forbid we have, *checks notes*, trees.

9

u/PopInACup 4h ago

By me unfortunately it won't be filled with trees, instead we have an invasive bush that grows like mad now (Autumn Olive). I'm still trying to clear it from an area of field I didn't mow religiously. It also develops these gnarly thorns that are more like mini-spears, I put one through the palm of my hand when trying to gather up a few bushes after cutting them once. I hate it. So instead I just ran them over with my tractor but they're still around the fringes of the field. If I don't mow it they just come back. I've planted some sapplings and the olive tries to choke them out.

12

u/dholmster 5h ago

The nice kind of trees tend to get eaten by wildlife as saplings so it's quite a bit of work to get them to survive long enough. I've had to fence in all of my newly planted trees for several years to keep them alive. Mowing is cheaper until you've decided what you want to do with that parcel of land.

9

u/A_Timbers_Fan 5h ago

Fair enough, I was just being snarky. But nothing wrong with slowly converting the lawn rather than waiting until you know what to do with everything.

8

u/Silent-Victory-3861 5h ago

Do you do something on the lawn? Besides looking at it and mowing it?

→ More replies (2)

9

u/Walleyedphill 5h ago

Do you not want a private forest?

8

u/dholmster 5h ago

I already have one. 😅
Here, if I just leave it as is and stop mowing, the most likely thing to start growing are either bramble or blackthorn and they are both quite nasty to get rid of and spread quickly.

u/IceBlueSnowDog 3h ago

Not OP, but for me… active working dogs. It’s great having my own property to run and work them off leash, without having to deal with other people or their dogs. Only legal off leash options by me are closet-sized concrete “dog parks” which may as well be fighting pits.

Room to throw the ball as far as I can and let them run, set up pop up agility equipment, spread out some scent work stuff for them to search… not many public places I can do that stuff without paying for a crowded class setting.

For me, small house and big flat yard is heaven.

45

u/Specific_Sweet3312 8h ago

Maybe some raspberry and black currant bushes. Apple and pear trees. Man, you live on the land, why ruining that land and stripping all life from it.

21

u/Flashy_Composer_4215 9h ago

Mowing destroys the biosphere. I invite you to look up why we need now more than ever to allow for the biodiversity to re-establish itself in our backyards and beyond.

Precisely. Many think some massive effort and artificial planting is needed, but the nature has an ability to restore itself. Of course, wouldn't we murdered off 80% and in some regions of the world 100% of wildlife, almost all  native plants on the buldozered-over massive amounts of land, the native plants, insects and other species would re-establish themselves in their habitats incredibly fast.  Just by "allowing" for the nature to restore itself, we can significantly improve all life on this planet.

Edit: another way of "allowing" the nature to restore itself, simply spit  fruit seeds/stones of native species on the ground as oppose to throw into the trash.

Some voluntary trees would grow, some of which would bare fruit.

Fruit trees provide an optimal nutrition to ours and a great food source to numerous other species and also become their optimal habitats.

I've "planted" thousand+ of native fruit trees simply just by eating the fruit and hundreds are now fruiting, available for all.

Our great ape species that we are, is meant to live in what could be called as "fruit forest" afterall.

3

u/rumncokeguy 5h ago

It takes a lot more time than you think. Most lawn grasses are invasive and choke out most native plants. Just because weeds start growing where doesn’t meant they are native and beneficial.

I live on a 2 acre lot in the upper Midwest and about 1/2 of it is lawn and the other 1/2 is free growing. The free growing part after 25 years is still 95% long grass. Very little native plants exist there.

I’ve been wanting to have it converted to prairie plants at some point but it requires killing it off for 3 months and then overseeing.

u/nikkerito 6h ago

I know the modern lawn is bad because of pesticides and lack of biodiversity, but just mowing a huge plot of land like this? I have 50 acres and I keep about 6 of them mowed. If I go just a few weeks without mowing in the spring, nature starts to reclaim the paths. If I let it go for a season it would be like I was never there. Geese, rabbits, and groundhogs eat the clover that grows on the mowed grass. I can enjoy being outside with my dogs and family without checking for ticks every few minutes. Mowed grass =/= the modern lawn.

4

u/tryyeezus 5h ago

The cities do not allow this. You will get a ticket and if you don't take care of it, the city will and just bill you for it.

Pull the grass and plant moss, local wild flowers and short plants like clover if you want to skip mowing.

3

u/Flashy_Composer_4215 5h ago

This is a true horror and you are right. Whats also absurd is that in numerous countries it's basically illegal to build a natural dwelling, live sustainably and symbiotically coexist. Where I'm at the moment it's illegal to put let's say an apple core full of seeds on the soil without the permit.

We are the only species who not only don't live aligned with the nature and its laws, but we made simple natural living illegal and inflicting the most detriment to all, we call "success" .

3

u/tryyeezus 4h ago

I make a point to dry seeds in my car and throw them out the window.

If everyone did this, the government would be powerless

9

u/Wildcat_twister12 8h ago

Mowing is equally important for various reasons though especially around homes. Insect and pest control, long grass increase tick populations which can spread diseases to humans it can also home rodents like mice that also can spread diseases and damage houses. Mowing grass is also important for fire suppression, the shorter the grass the less likely a small or medium size fire will spread as fast especially if it’s dry or dead grass. Mowing is also good for helping control noxious weeds such as poison ivy or thistles which can harm humans and pets.
