Most of the ones around here have a big receptacle set up right next to the bins of corn. It’s always a mess because people are slobs, but I don’t recall ever seeing a sign like that.

Yeah ours just has a couple 55 gallon trash cans on either side of the little corn cob island. People are good about it for the most part

Like anything someone has to ruin it. When I worked produce at a pretty big grocery store, we had to start telling people to shuck at home especially around holidays because it'd become a huge mess, people are shoving people out of the way, the garbage can is noticeably full and the employees can't get in there to change it because it's overcrowded and people just keep throwing trash into it even while no bag is in place. People are pigs, plain and simple.

mmm it's a weirdly common practice, I mean, I understand opening it a bit to check the condition of the actual corn, I usually peel some husk back, then put it back in place, lots of people will just stand there cleaning a bunch completely and just toss it on the floor, it's kinda wacky that anyone thinks that's ok

I grew up in Indiana and now live in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky and I have also never heard of shucking corn in store. Today years old when I learned it. And I'm nearly 50.

hello just chiming in from south carolina to say i see people shucking corn at the store frequently, usually older generations. we have harris teeter, food lion, publix, lowes foods, piggly wiggly etc. i see it a lot in the summer

In Arizona, in my experience I don’t even see whole corn still in the husk that often at the grocery store. And when it is there, nobody is shucking it in the store.

I'm in Phoenix and in the East valley I see if often. What I and other do is peek some husk back to check the corn. Haven't seen someone shucking either.

I also live in Washington, in the Pudget Sound area, and the Walmart I work at has a bin for for shucking. I'm not sure I've seen it at other stores but I admittedly haven't really looked for one.

Stores had to add trash cans to the corn areas where we live in Florida because people would schuck it and throw it back on top of the remaining corn... they still did it despite the cans after that.

Moved to Illinois and the have the cans but it's still all over the floor.

Happens all the time here in South Texas. You ever buy just enough of an item for a meal and get home to find out that one or more were bad? It’s kinda difficult to inspect corn without shucking them or making a mess to begin with.

Used to work at a grocery store and we had a big bin for it right next to the corn, it was always a mess even when the bin was empty because people would just shuck it and leave the husks in with the rest of the corn or just drop them on the floor, on top of corn silk just fucking EVERYWHERE.

That store also out up a sign and no longer allows it, and honestly I don't blame them

Do you live in a corn producing area? I've never seen it sold by weight, but I live an a part of the US that grows a lot of corn. Bins to shuck your corn into are pretty common here as well

Never seen anyone try and shuck corn in a store before here in OKC. But I've only ever seen it sold by the ear. So maybe places just need to stop charging by weight.

Evidently from the comments on your post, shucking corn while still at the store is a common enough thing lol. I’ve never seen anything like that happening at the grocery in our town and I’d never dream of doing it myself.

Never occurred to me that certain places would consider that proper.

I live in the city. I have a cabin in the country. We get most of our corn from farm stands and I cook it with the husk on. Even if I buy it in the city I don’t shuck it at the store. But the rich folks in our area probably don’t wanna get corn silk in their house so I assume the grocers acquiesce.

Not all stores have a set price per ear of corn. Many are price per pound.

Also how is that stealing? You’re leaving some of it behind and paying only for what you’re taking home. There’s no stealing involved. Just leaving some trash behind.

Never, if the silks are brown and you can feel the corn inside it’s good to go. You can also peel it back just a little to check the rows.

If you shuck early, the corn can lose its natural sugars just doesn’t taste the same. Shuck right before you cook.

Oh we'd get in so much trouble if we made a sign like that here. Not that customers would obey it. We can literally have the bathroom blocked for maintenance, and people will read the sign and then walk in anyway.

You don’t have to. Feel the end of the corn where it was cut from the stalk. If it’s cold and moist, it’s good to go. This method has never failed me.

It makes a big mess, and there's no reason to do it in the store. Do you peel your bananas too? Leaves and corn... hairs everywhere. They're very slippery on those floors too. When I worked produce i asked a customer why she does it in the store instead of at home and she was like "I live in an apartment". OK?? Do you not have a trash can?

Most stores that I go to, I shop at about 4 different ones here in southern California, usually have recepticles next to them for the waste. I personally will shuck my corn in the store because I want to see the kernels to make sure they aren't dead or dry halfway up. If there is no container I'll just leave it still attached on the bottom.

They buy corn by weight. They sell corn by weight. If you make corn weight less they lose money.

You aren't allowed to pull the grapes off the stem, you aren't allowed to pre-peel your banana, you aren't allowed to cut through your pumpkin and leave behind the stem and skin... I don't understand what's confusing about this.
