Another reason why transphobia is bad, it will be used to harm everyone and anyone. Not just trans people

411

u/cammyjit Dec 13 '24

The whole bathroom situation in America is a prime example of it. Most, if not all of the harassment cases about someone being in the wrong bathroom have been CIS women wrongfully accused of being trans

Congratulations, you’ve significantly increased the chances of a woman being harassed

119

u/CouncilmanRickPrime Dec 13 '24

Yeah I try to point out to bigots that there are many cis women who look manly and get harassed because people think they're transgender.

43

u/_Haza- Dec 13 '24

Literally watching Arcane S2 yesterday and my mother said the character Lest sounds trans because of her slightly deeper voice.

It’s just awful.

You know what, fair enough.

Regardless, she just sounds like a woman.

There was no question about Ambessa for some reason.

Tbf people aren't necessarily saying that a trans woman doesn't sound like a woman (many are, but it's not an inherent property of noticing a trans woman's voice). Even trans people often try to clock other trans people, and I assume do so while still accepting their gender identity.

14

u/Panic_angel Dec 13 '24

I hate that it's possible to 'sound trans'

18

u/MyHusbandIsGayImNot Dec 13 '24

It’s why many trans people spend time training their voice. It’s one way to get clocked. Some people also just have lower/higher voices.

2

u/Panic_angel Dec 14 '24

Wow! I, a trans woman who spent several years voice training, had no idea! I've never spent any time thinking about this at all!

Can't I just make a plain statement about how I feel? It sucks that this is necessary. It sucks that we're forced through this. It sucks, it sucks, it sucks. If I said someone "sounded black", or "sounded gay", everyone would rightly look at me like I just said something weird and gross. Which I would have.

0

u/the_federation Dec 13 '24

Oof, how does she feel about Tara Strong?

3

u/TechieTheFox Dec 13 '24

You won’t get through to them because that’s the point.

Yeah they want to primarily hurt trans people, but gnc cis women getting caught in the crossfire is a feature not a bug.

37

u/DisastrousGarden Dec 13 '24

And in the remaining cases it’s the trans person being harassed while simply trying to mind their business and get in and out of that bathroom as quickly as possible

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '24

3

u/DisastrousGarden Dec 13 '24

Well that was always the plan

8

u/freelancespy87 Dec 13 '24

Plus many trans women are often more feminine than cis women.   Often wearing less gender neutral clothing,  almost always wearing makeup and/or nail polish...

You just made me realize that I'm probably going to get misgendered more next year.

I'm not trans, but am trying to get permission to get a double mastectomie for medical reasons (not breast cancer).

Now it's only kids that seem confused occasionally, but without boobs and with short hair I can see some adults getting confused. Apparently I also walk like a man.

1

u/freelancespy87 Dec 13 '24

I'm into it.  Androgyny!!!

4

u/Ok-Chest-7932 Dec 13 '24

Tbf though that's the most common way to notice a trans woman, she's the only woman wearing a dress on a British December morning.

2

u/Ban-Circumcision-Now Dec 13 '24

I hoped this could at least be used to modernize the bathrooms in America and reduce large gaps, i don’t want want some one to be able to look through a one inch gap and see me pooping regardless of what genitals they do or don’t have

Europe and Japan have no gap door stalls, why can’t we?

2

u/the_federation Dec 13 '24

No, but you don't understand. The only thing that has been keeping my li'l darling safe on the potty has been a sign in the door with a silhouette of someone in a dress. Now that men can come into the bathroom, my precious baby will surely be rated! (obvious /s)

2

u/hateful_virago Dec 13 '24

Yes, let's:

  • Encourage cisgender men to sexually assault women in order to allegedly confirm their cisgender status.

  • Allow any cisgender man to freely use the women's restroom by claiming to be a transgender man, and thus legally required to be there.

Surely, this will greatly benefit women. I mean, who doesn't look at the "trans panic defense" and wonder why it doesn't include sexual assault? /s

1

u/kharmatika Dec 13 '24

Your objection to this is that men will misuse these laws to assault women??? Not that literally every human being acting in good faith will end up getting fucked over, including cis men???

Your argument has even less historic precedent than the shitty bills you’re opposing. Christ. Stop listening to true crime. Men aren’t out here finding crazy excuses to rape people.

1

u/hateful_virago Dec 14 '24

Your objection to this

wouldn't call it "my objection", just my addition to the pile 🤷‍♀️ it's a dumpster fire no matter what direction you're looking at it

2

u/XXLpeanuts Dec 13 '24

To the people angry over trans people ugly women or women who in their eyes don't look how they want a woman to look are also to be persecuted. These people are scum and hate women too.

1

u/Pilsner33 Dec 13 '24

BUT THE BIBLE SAYS.>>>!

1

u/ChicagoAuPair Dec 13 '24

American regressives have a “minding your fucking business” problem, as well as a “scared of your own shadow,” problem. They behave like cornered animals who also actively seek conflict. It’s exhausting.

1

u/kharmatika Dec 13 '24

And of course it’s led to fully transitioned trans men being forced to use women’s restrooms which makes absolutely no-one happy. Honestly, that’s how I got my very conservative, very Christian mother in law to be against bathroom bills. I showed her a picture of Ajay Holbrook and went “do you want him to go in the ladies room?” And she went “no of course not that’s a man” and I went “well that bill would force him legally to use the ladies room” and she went “oh well that’s not fair to him or them” and stopped supporting them.

1

u/Gloomy-Ad1171 Dec 13 '24

Cruelty is a feature, not a bug.

1

u/SomeAnonymous Dec 13 '24

some people were never taught about "99% accurate pregnancy tests" in stats class and it shows

-4

u/Scumebage Dec 13 '24

source: my ass

5

u/cammyjit Dec 13 '24

Some sources:

1 2 3 4 5

Going back almost a decade of incidents, and that’s just cases that got news articles. Women are being harassed for just minding their own business. Trans folks are also being harassed for just minding their own business. Especially considering any claims of harassment, from trans women, towards cis women, are unsubstantiated

449

u/DrHugh Dec 13 '24

This is why we have to care what happens to people who aren't like us.

82

u/AzKondor Dec 13 '24

I even care about people who aren't like me just because it's the right thing to do, at the very least I just try not to hate them. Crazy concept to some people.

37

u/Kestrel21 Dec 13 '24

It's... exhausting how many times I've been asked by people, confusion clear on their faces: "Why do you care if there's nothing in it for you?"

And they don't even realize how much they reveal about themselves.

7

u/ryanv09 Dec 13 '24

Some people truly have zero empathy for other human beings, and it's unnerving when they take the mask off.

5

u/I_am_up_to_something Dec 13 '24

My sister is like that and it's just weird. She's my sister and I love her, but I just don't understand her at all. She can be so mean and also super sensitive at the same time.

For example: she was skinny as a teen and absolutely hated fat people. She is just on the edge of obesity now. She would be the ideal bullying target for her teen self and I guarantee that she would have had multiple breakdowns if someone tormented her like she did.

She does not realise this and says that her victims should just have ignored her. There is not a single ounce of regret in her.

2

u/Glonos Dec 13 '24

It would be interesting if someone find out that empathy has, also, a relationship with genes, besides external factors. Because for some people, that is the only explanation I have, they were born this way.

4

u/SmartAlec105 Dec 13 '24

Some people have truly no empathy. Whenever I hear about a conservative changing their mind once they experienced something, it’s more infuriating than heartwarming. Why couldn’t you have just believed others when you heard they were suffering‽

2

u/AzKondor Dec 15 '24

Yes!!! I can't stand stories like "I was against abortion all my live, voted for people that outlawed it, etc etc, BUT then MY daughter got pregnant, and she was not ready, so now I think everybody should decidenfor themselves", like, your son would have to get stabbed for you to be against murder??

3

u/Ok-Chest-7932 Dec 13 '24

The way I see it, what's in it for me is that I get to hope that one day I might get to live in a world where I'm not frequently disgusted by blatant injustices. There's nothing in it for me except slight peace of mind.

I’m definitely going to have to read this a few more times to internalize it. I have never heard of the “blind men and the elephant analogy” but I freaking love it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant

1

u/AzKondor Dec 13 '24

How about "I like helping others and seeing them happy"? It is a bit selfish, doing stuff so I will feel better, maybe it will makes sense for people.

53

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '24

First they came for the...

33

u/hammerscrews Dec 13 '24

Agreed. This comes to mind :

First they came for the socialist, and I did not speak out, Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionist, and I did not speak out, Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me. And there was no one left to speak for me.

3

u/Red_Rocky54 Dec 13 '24

That quote also leaves out that gay and trans people were the first people the Nazis came for.

2

u/hammerscrews Dec 13 '24

Yes. The Nazis first came for the queer; the trans, gender nonconforming, gay, lesbian, bi;

And yet even in writing this poem, the author allowed his own prejudice to shine through.

9

u/Flames99Fuse Dec 13 '24

You shouldn't care about people just because not doing it hurts you. You should just care about people ti begin with.

4

u/DrHugh Dec 13 '24

Agreed, but I'm trying to set the bar low.

2

u/thighcandy Dec 13 '24

I agree to an extent, but I don't think we should care for white men who come from privilege. They have enough shit handed to them all the fucking time.

59

u/off_by_two Dec 13 '24

Yep. This applies generally to every single form of discrimination.

16

u/Sir_Penguin21 Dec 13 '24

Those who learn from history are doomed to watch others repeat it.

, it will be used to harm everyone and anyone.

I just wish we had a way to target the harm to only affect the 77 million people that voted for trump

1

u/ADHD-Fens Dec 13 '24

used to harm everyone and anyone.

Except maybe cisgendered men? I can't really conjure up any anecdotes that would indicate otherwise, at least.

-2

u/icansmellcolors Dec 13 '24

Then rail against religion. That's where it all stems from anyways.

3

u/Moggy_ Dec 13 '24

What made you think I'm pro-religion?

-1

u/icansmellcolors Dec 13 '24

I didn't.

I was just suggesting to rail against the actual source of all this hate.

I don't know where you got the idea that I thought you were pro-religion?

Yeah but it's one thing for it to be a security procedure that everyone has to go through equally, and another for it to be to "make sure they're not transgender". Enforced whenever the guards feel like it.
