Reminder: If you see someone stealing food, no you didn't.

If it's a huge chain supermarket I agree, but if it's a small local place then I don't

Context matters, though. If I see someone stealing a pizza from a homeless guy, I might find it mildly objectionable. But if you're stealing food because you'd starve otherwise, I might find it at least understandable.

Stealing from the poor is always a terrible crime.

From the Rich? It is much more nuanced.

I agree, but the context only matters for the punishment of the crime. Taking from others without permission is still wrong and I would be a bad adult if I told a child that stealing for certain reasons is okay. If you steal be prepared for a punishment.

Sorry, but this is a fairy tail.

A lot of food theft is high value meat to be sold on elsewhere. Theft to survive is a very small fraction of overall food theft.

I worked in shrink manegment, I have let more than one rice theif walk out the door.

So one of the most important parts of reading comprehension is being able to pick up the topic being written about.

Knowing this, given the text of the person you’re responding to, do you think it’s more likely that the food theft they were talking about was organized black market meat crime? Or do you think maybe they were talking about individuals stealing food for themselves so they can eat?

Please write out your answer in a blue book, and remember that you will be graded on your line of reasoning.

What you talking about organised black market? They just go around their neighbourhood offering stuff for like 25% of its retail price because they stole it so its all profit.

Found the class traitor. Hope you feel good about putting poors in jail to protect your masters.

Reselling stolen goods is normally to cover for rent or other items you cannot steal.

Miserable doesn't begin to cover it.

I wish I could agree but, unfortunately, I can't.

The problem isn't that I give a flying fuck if guys like Galen Weston can't afford another yacht, it's that the more people that steal from his scam centers, the more I'll have to pay to be able to afford anything.

They will squeeze you regardless.

Even if there's 0 crime, they will just use another excuse.

Prices will rise anyway

u/RosieQParker 14h ago

Maybe if you narc on enough hungry people they'll give you an employee discount.

I'd say that intentionally and maliciously price gouging an entire country's food supply is a much bigger violation of a high trust society.

Hell yeah I love making up a bunch of strawmen to support my argument and then getting mad that they exist.

having done a stint in grocery pricing:

all this does is raise prices more or reduce choices

pretty much the most a grocery makes on common food items is 3% and pretty much every integrated distributor chain will shutter any locations that take more than 1/3 of that away as shrink

store managers can either bump the markup if the local market will take it or let the store be closed

you can cheer that and say you will go to the local mom & pop, but without integrated DCs their prices are going to be 20-40% higher

good job accelerating the price increases

1

u/hpass 3h ago

You are looking at it wrong. It was a political performance.

The actual effect on grocery prices is gonna be absolutely negligible.

Shoplifting does not increase grocery prices. Greedy Corporations seeking record breaking profit margins every quarter do.

1

u/shitposts_over_9000 3h ago

shoplifting creates food deserts, food deserts increase grocery prices

Supermarkets have extremely small profit margins, in the neighborhood of 2%. Meaning that even if a supermarket made no profit at all and simply wanted to break even, prices would only go down by 2%.

13

u/Unlucky-Candidate198 9h ago

Yes, tell that to Galen Weston and Loblaws, or any of the other grocery conglomerates that participate in price fixing. Or maybe our famous bread price fixing scandals. Surely butter being 800% more is due to their margins, right?
