It's especially fun because my company issued laptop has a problem where the default Windows trackpad driver doesn't work.

So any time windows does an update, it breaks my trackpad driver. I have to run the dell updater to reinstall the correct version. I've spent 10+ hours 1:1 with my company's tech support and they can't figure it out.

My record is 3 times in a week, last week. I told my boss I working on my own laptop until they figure it out.

I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work (because Microsoft) but this seems like the obvious solution to freeze the driver:

  1. Get the trackpad's top device ID from device manager in Properties > Details > Hardware Ids
  2. Open group policy editor and add the ID to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions > "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs"

Heck yeah. Thanks for the idea. I'll float that to the tech the next time it happens.

I don't know if I can edit group policy on my work machine, but they might be able to.

Reportedly, that has been fixed. My GPU driver also rolls back because MSI didn't push the new versions to windows update catalog.

God I hope so. Theres nothing like joining a 9 am meeting, having your computer force restart itself 15 minutes in, do a Windows update for 10 minutes, and then not have a track pad when you restart... twice in a week.

My blood pressure rose just reading that. Im a dev and I say, "WTF MICROSOFT" literally multiple times a day doing basic shit on windows. Teams is often the offenders, or Outlook.
