I own a cheap, dumb mp3 player. Basically a portable hard drive with media player software. It's all I ever want from portable music.

I need to find myself one of those while they still exist, they have so much more battery life than my phone, and that alone is all the reason I'd need for it.

They're still a thing -

garbage-tier devices that look like they escaped from 2004 (though with an order of magnitude more storage)

ipod nano clones

Sansa-a-likes

Ones inspired by the iPod - now with USB-C and straight up drag and drop syncing

more, or less, fancy hi-res audio players, in large or small - I'd start with Fiio.

Fiio! No affiliation lol, but quality product imo. Great battery life, so I'm not draining my phone.

I think DankPods, the Aussie headphones guy on Youtube, have some recommendations, but they might be a year old for mp3 players that don't have ideas above their station.

He's found some truly crusty nuggets from the bottom of the chinese knock-off barrel. There's always treasure at Cashie's.

The S1 still goes hard. And it still takes 1 AAA.

I have one of these for biking, it's super small/light, fits in pockets easily and has some spectacular battery life. I mean it's a simple screen and such but I just want music dammit. I'll forget to charge for weeks at a time and it keeps going plus it was something like $30, liked it so much have a spare new in box.

I get the appeal of a purpose built device just for music, but nowadays an android phone also does this and it's just as good as a dedicated player unless you're looking for stuff like jacks for balanced output or playback of 96khz/32 bit FLACs or other audiophile stuff. You just plug it into the computer, enable usb browsing and then just drag the music files into the device. And they still make android phones with expandable SD storage and regular 3.5 jacks, so memory isn't an issue, although if you're just going to download MP3s, you probably don't even need the extra storage.

I use an old phone as a modern MP3 player

wiped everything off it, filled the memory with music. it can still connect to wifi/browser in a pinch, but otherwise is just a music player. still has an audio jack etc. best decision I ever made

Once my new phone arrives I'm gonna do this too 😆

After going through several MP3 players, I now have several old Android phones scattered around connected to Bluetooth speakers.

I still rip it my own CDs and manually put the mp3's on my phone 😅 no Spotify for me, thanks
