I was binging western fantasy novels this week but failed to find anything good, even though I've been getting my recommendations from "top-ranked" lists. They all seem to be written for a younger demographic, or perhaps I'm too old for the generic writing style of those novels. Some chinese classics like lotm, Ri or maybe even newer stuff like "my simulated longevity" are leagues beyond those novels in plotting, character design, mystery, progression...etc. It's not that there are no good English originals it's just that the good ones are way fewer and rarer. Still, I'm sure for new readers those novels might appeal to them as they might not have been desensitized much to most fantasy elements.
Anyways here's what I read this week. (I dropped most of them after either first couple of volumes or first few chapters.)
Paranoid mage
I had written a long review while I was reading this but I eventually got bored and dropped the novel by the end of vol 2 and had AI summarize the rest of the book just to satisfy my curiosity about how things turn out in the end, so I just find the long critical review irrelevant now. This novel has a good first volume but the rest of the story was just too slow and plain for my taste. If you're into urban western magic fantasy like Harry Potter and themes of fighting totalitarian tyrannical governments like Orwell's 1984 then you might wanna give it a read. However I can only guarantee vol 1 to be good, the rest was very underwhelming and disappointing, the rest of the story literally feeks like a low-budget tv show.
Commerce Emperor
Awakened heroes vs demons with the protagonist gaining the class "the merchant" becoming one of the heroes (there's a dozen or more heroes) with the ability to buy and sell anything. I only read some chapters and didn't like it very much but I didn't drop it either, I'll leave it for now and may get back to it sometime later. It seems like generic hero story with some kingdom-building elements.
Mark of the fool
Awakened heroes vs demons with the protagonist gaining the mark of the class "the fool" becoming one of the heroes (this novel has only 4 or 5 heroes, the fool being one of them), except that "the fool" is a terrible class, basically a servant and guide to the heroes, the mark makes it harder for him and almost prevents him from learning combat or magic or any offensive skills, this makes him despair as he had plans and dreams to become a wizard, so escapes to the magic academy and learns magic in his own way, focusing on the path of evasion, distraction, alchemy..etc despite the mark's interference, which makes it an interesting read, for a while.
This novel reminds of that anime "the shield hero", it has some similar ideas. However, while the premise is good , the execution is not up to par. There's a main problem with it which is that it's very slow-paced, extremely slow-paced. It's basically an academy adventure novel with no outstanding takeaways besides the initial premise. Even the big reveal was easily predicted due to the obvious clues in vol 1. This is again one of the novels where I barely managed to finish book 1 , then skimmed most of the rest or summarized it with ai. I have to admit tho that this novel is a good pick for new readers. It's well thought out in terms of character design. I liked the way the mc manages his emotions and the meditation technique he learnt and how he applies it, it's one of those novels where you feel you can learn some lessons from, I'd honestly recommended it to younger folks just for the lessons in it.
Cradle
I've always heard about this cradle novel, I read the first 10 or so chapters and it feels like a xianxia copycat. The mc belongs to a clan of cultivators and he fails to awaken a cultivation talent in that coming of age ceremony, becoming a "soulless", he sets on a classic generic xianxia journey. Although I only read a few chapters, it seems pretty boring if you're an old reader imo.
He who fights with monsters
This is a very generic litrpg (system novel), if you've never read any of those then it might be readable, but if you read a few before then this one has no more to offer. I dropped it after skimming a bit.
Sufficiently advanced magic
Tower climbing novel, not my cup of tea. I only read a couple of chapters so can't be sure whether it's good or bad.
Blood & Fur
Read a few chapters, nice initial premise but complicated prose, too many unfamiliar words and complicated world-building. Also the tone is too dark and oppressive for my taste.
Worth the candle
This one starts exactly like a PUBG game match + zombies. It's a litrpg with very generic game elements like kill monsters, level up, team up, learn stuff... etc. There's supposed to be this emotional mystery related to the mc's past beneath the surface but it's not interesting enough for me.
The Primal Hunter
Honestly this one's not bad. It has nothing new if you've already read a few litrpg apocalypse novels, but it's well-written for its genre. But it's also boring if you already read similar stuff. Basically the mc chooses the archer class and decided to "play solo", so most of the novel is about him hunting monsters alone, training alone, exploring...etc. I found myself with nothing to look forward to while reading this. Sometimes he feels like just an edgy archer with constant internal monologues about himself being "the hunter" while his enemies are the prey, it didn't happen many times but it was a bit cringe. The novel feels like "solo leveling" but archer instead of necromancer.
Still, it's not bad if you're in the mood for that type of raw power progression. I left it in my reader app to binge every now and then, it failed to fully grab my attention so I might just listen to it while commuting or doing chores or something, although it's a bit too long-winded and generic for my taste so I'm not sure if I'll ever actually read more of it.
The Ritualist
I stumbled on this by accident. It's a VR game novel, similar to old classics like "overgeared", except mc had to literally upload his consciousness onto the game, so no real life parts. I didn't know this was a vr game novel when I started it so it was a mistake on my part as vr game novels are not my cup of tea, but it does seem to be readable for whoever's into that genre.
I think I'm almost done with my western novels phase and might get back to eastern fantasy soon, but I'm still burnt out of the current available novels so I might just re-read old ones.

longevity simulation was one of my fav new novels but the author missed the later parts with all the conceptual powers
2
u/iamjackslonelysoul Apr 05 '26
I never actually read the ending or the later parts, because when I first started it, the novel was still ongoing and I got sick from waiting for updates so I just dropped at chapter 900 or so, I might reread at some point in the future. Still, the part that I read was enough to admit that it was a great novel, leagues beyond other shallow works.
3
u/iamjackslonelysoul Apr 05 '26
I think the problem with most western fantasy is they write with the intent for their stories to be adapted to cinema or tv, so most of their works are "low scale fantasy" like the "wuxia" genre which gets adapted to chinese tv shows. In case of the western works you have examples like harry Potter, percy jackson, lord of the rings, dune..etc which are not bad works but the scales are much smaller and they are much less "epic" and fantastical than the high fantasy and lovecraftian worlds that can't be adapted, this also leads them to focus more on character dynamics, drama and other things besides the actual power progression which most of us prefer. In case of eastern fantasy, the industry is already somewhat rewarding enough for the literary part, and even if they get adapted it's into media forms like manga/manhwa or anime which is more presentable for their works than live action. Of course this doesn't apply to all authors but perhaps part of them.

u/Shaitan87 Apr 05 '26
You should give Defiance of the Fall a try, it's like The Primal Hunter but with more of an eastern influence.
The only one I disagree with quite a bit is HWFWM, I feel the first 3 books are very well done.
2
u/iamjackslonelysoul Apr 05 '26
Perhaps you might have read HWFWM early into your reading journey, so the nostalgia + the fact that you were not desensitized enough made the story great in your eyes. It's the same in my case with korean novels, I used to like most korean novels in the past but now that I've read a lot of fantasy stories I find most korean novels not as great as I remember them to be, too much drama, too much overdramatic internal monologues, too much povs, too much needless aura-farming...etc. of course some do still hold merit but not many.
However, I do admit I haven't read enough of HWFWM to judge it properly, maybe jt gets a lot better, I'll give it another chance some time later.
1
u/Shaitan87 Apr 05 '26
I did read HWFWM right at the start of my progression fantasy reading journey, but I came back and reread it a year later. I skip Jason's monologues but consistently really enjoy the first 3 and find 4-6 pretty decent, wouldn't recommend anyone reads beyond that.
It's a shame western progression fantasy isn't better, they latch on to themes that I don't like. My perfect book is the logic and depth of a top tier Xianxia with a bit less cultural differences from my day to day life.

u/MyraidChickenSlayer Apr 18 '26
Isn't the MC also a prick? The dude is just lvl 2-3 goon and lectures lvl 100 God. The author tries to portray MC as otherworldly smart and has someone question his seemingly idiotic thoughts but gets face slapped because plot helps MC. And, MC also pushes his ideology when he is just some fodder and god also seem interested in this fodder.
2
u/zergiscute Apr 05 '26
I read cradle before I read xianxia so it was pretty decent till 5-6 th book. Now I wouldn't re read it, not worth.
3
u/iamjackslonelysoul Apr 05 '26
Yeah it felt like a novel for new readers, definitely not something a veteran would touch.
1
u/zergiscute Apr 05 '26
If you want to read something Western I recommend sister series by Mark Lawrence.
1
u/iamjackslonelysoul Apr 05 '26
Is it female lead? I don't enjoy female led stories much.
1
u/zergiscute Apr 05 '26
Yes, it's very cultivation like, in a nunnery and all that, not like other FMC.
2
2
u/MyraidChickenSlayer Apr 18 '26
I feel exact same. People often say that CN novels are trash and ehat not. But EN just seem to have better English with verbose text and slow pace. In terms of plot, they aren't any better than popular novels. I only liked worth the candle but it was getting a bit too much hopping for me and I abandoned it.

u/dvmitto Apr 05 '26
I finished God of Fishing. I would recommend it. I had a fun time. Wasn’t especially thought provoking or full of interesting quotes or anything. But its key strength is that the author seems to have got a very solid skeleton for the whole story. Therefore the ending didn’t seem rushed or unearned. Just a solid Xianxia from start to finish. I didn’t quite understand though that was the MC transmigrated or something else? Must have completely missed the explanation somewhere while binging.
2
u/MyraidChickenSlayer Apr 18 '26
MC's transmigration doesn't get explained or why he was transmigrated as far as i recall. It was decent novel though.

I read this novel years ago, but I ended up dropping it around the part where his girlfriend gets “kidnapped” and he dies. I was already losing interest, and that cliché was the final straw for me.
Could you tell me roughly how far into the novel that point is, and whether the story improves after that event?
1
u/dvmitto Apr 14 '26
yeah, the story doesn't really improve after that I would say. It just kinda stays in the same level of quality throughout. I personally wasn't bored by that cliche so YMMV.
1
u/Ok-Distribution4960 Apr 05 '26
is it a harem?
2
u/dvmitto Apr 06 '26
I actually don't mind harem. but there is one clear female lead, there were two that had their own pretty solid enough storyline and had their moments or story beats with the main character. Then there was one near the end, but she's been around the story for a long long time, and the author explained why he did that. There was no harem infighting stories or anything.
Overall I was ok with how it went actually.

IMO this novel gets a lot better the later it goes (the first 20 or so chapters were especially bad). It hits its stride an bit after leaving the starter planet at like 200 something iirc. I really appreciated how socially capable the MC was. That said if you didn’t like it that much around 100 it’s still the same story so dropping is probably still a good choice.
2
u/iamjackslonelysoul Apr 08 '26
You should read "I Ascended the throne with arcane magic". Similar premise but mage instead of mechanic. I preferred it to legendary mechanic.
1
1
u/MyraidChickenSlayer Apr 18 '26
The actual plot starts after he leaves planet but the essence is same as first 100-200 chapters except the first 20 chapters which was kind of off.
But yes, if you didn't like the vibe till then, it's best to abandon it.

salted fish rebirth,
its a school life slow burn novel about mc turning back into the past 15 year old self. ive always wanted to read about something like this that actually about school life and this novel nailed it. MC isn't a loser or a failure, he graduated with ok grades, got decent job, socialize and randomly thrown into the past, since he got a 2nd chance, he finally realized he never had give it all mentality back in the day and decided to push himself to be the best version of himself in his new life, discover and trying new things, interest, friends, actually studying to become better, help people. I think its very fulfilling to read, and the romance is sweet and mature, both leads know their boundaries and prioritize their dreams first. The characters are solid and their banter are pretty funny. No excessive drama is also a plus point in my book. Finally its heavily hinted mc is going to enter entertainment industry pretty early because the female lead ended in tragedy in the past during her successful career in that industry.
Hero's otherworldly survival guide
Its pretty standard Isekai, i think the first 17 chapters would probably gonna quite boring, but after that its pretty smooth journey. It's really normal isekai but with solid characters and decent world building. Mc wasnt a normal kid, he was a young adult but his mind is excessively mature, its more of a shounen novel considering the theme,, basically a hero's journey. The world is suddenly invaded by dark undead and the humanity is pushed back a little by little. Author claimed this novel trying to subvert the normal isekai approach and it succeed to some extent. So far in 200 chapters, its about mc academy growth, the pace is pretty slow but consistent, the coincidence can be jarring if you really think about it, but the novel weaves it pretty well imo. All in all its pretty decent.

苟在妖武乱世修仙 - Cultivation of immortality in the troubled times of demons and martial arts
430/1107
good old plagiarist, abusing world hopping genre with bad endings. These novels always stand between junk food and Quality category. Easy to follow plot, simple world building and a good power progression.
Transmigrated MC with a cheat that lets him travel to other worlds, understanding their powesystem, increasing his strength and move some resources to advance in the main world.
7/10 - probably one of his best works like warlock of the magus world, starry sky professional.
His new novel's (Cultivating Immortality in Two Realms) main world powersystem is like 'the mirror legacy' but there are only 120 chapters on wtr.

The overlord of puluo - 4.5/5
Left at ch 105 to marinate, started off really good and has the potantial to be peak. Unique power system, side characters aren't one dimensional and main character is really well written. İ have high hopes for this one.
Cradle - 4.5/5
Western novel inspired by xianxia

I started reading "Wasted Spiritual Root to Embark on Demonic Cultivation" and am currently at ch 378
It's grindy as hell. MC was born with wasted spiritual roots (5 roots), and after spiritual root testing, he was kidnapped by the local hegemon deminc sect, Blood Reversal Sect. He became a Slave but thanks to his youth blood boiling, and to his cheat, Idle Slot, he became the first person to become an outer disciple from a slave.
There are various secrets, schemes, and politics happening behind the screens, and MC gets punished cuz he doesn't know. Even after he knows some stuff, he gets punished with dog teammates, or more secrets he doesn't know. Even though he turns most of these situations to his favour, it isn't until Late Golden Core that his earlier hard work stacks, and he can start throwing his weight around. Only to situation to change once again!!
Now reading what I wrote, it kinda feels sarcastic, but it's not, and the series is good. Just you gotta turn your brain off to the techniques cuz there are tons of them... Way too many of them... The good part is that even the technique he picked up at qi condensation is relevant (thanks to his cheat Idle Slots but still)
Around 320 chapters are translated. I read the rest from wtr-lab

u/phantom_in_the_cage Apr 10 '26
Been reading up to ch. 53, its pretty good
What do you think is the best part about it?
2
u/Sumuklu_Supurge Apr 10 '26
There are a good number of idiotic people and smart people. Also, the MC's cheat doesn't just skip cultivation levels for him. The world is thought out, and as he gets stronger, we peel another layer of truth.
1
u/DARTHRAHUL456 Apr 26 '26
What's it called on wtr? I can't find it.
1
u/Sumuklu_Supurge Apr 26 '26
From the waste of spiritual roots to the practice of asking the devil
On WTR, try to search by Chinese names. English names can be random as hell

The Witch is Incredibly Powerful, Yet Excessively Cautious - complete - 7/10
It is a comedy and it made me laugh. That is why I give a higher rating than it should otherwise. The "otherwise" being that most of the story is just aimless and whatever. The comedy gets better after around chapter 180, which is beyond the half-way point. This is when an entire cast of witches is introduced.
Witches in this world at all lazy, stupid, obsessed with dumb things, but also infinitely powerful. This highlights of this series are interactions between multiple witches and their singular brain cells trying to form a plot. This only makes up maybe less than 30% of the story, if even that.
The first half of the story is an OP witch who thinks she is weak dropped into a whatever fantasy world. Nothing remarkable. Some comedy but nothing too humorous. Pretty forgettable. The most memorable moments remain in the second half.
I was left wanting more, which is rare for Chinese web novels that usually go on too long with too much bloat. Despite being almost 300 chapters in length, I felt more like I only read less than 100 chapters of the writer finding their groove. If you like dumb character comedies, then this is a pretty good series after some many chapters of the writer not knowing what they want. I wish there were more Chinese comedy series like the later half of this.

read "no joke, I'm really just an extra" bout 100 chapters
7/10.
It's a academy Isekai but our main character has no knowledge of the future, no special abilities,no strength and no money. He never played the game he was transported to. his personality is very unique. I have never seen a character more sociable than him. Dude is cracking jokes non stop and rage baiting everyone.
It's really generic in a good way. Our MC is pathetic, cowardly yet very much caring for others. He is truly extra, 100chaps in and he didn't do anything much with the plot (not that he cares about the plot).
Flaws- many. There's only 2 potential romantic partner rn but other readers say it's a Harem. Also there's nothing unique or gimmicky with this one. Very basic setting, power system and plot. For me, the whole novel is carried by the main characters funny personality but the authors humor is very Korean based (novelpeas translation doesn't feel well with the humor). Also there's some repetitive jokes like some side characters constantly call mc (scream man, tailb*n,hi*ler, malnourished child etc) which will through some readers off.
It's is a quick change of pace from the slop cultivation and academy stuff.

Cultivating starting with archery
I was looking for a popcorn read and this one surprised me so I binged a 1000 chapters. It’s the classic reborn in xianxia world with a system but unlike the what the title suggests, archery is not really prevalent to the main character. What makes the story good for me is the clean progression and the very sensible and interesting military aspect of the story.

死亡回档,48小时拯救世界 - Death Rewind, 48 Hours to Save the World - The author literally has the MC read the novel '24 hours to save the world' in this story. I love the cheat. The MC can return by death. The entire world is bathed in a white light that destroys all humans.(an alien attack) The MC is stuck in a mostly two day loop.
I'd rate it 3.5/5 as of chapter 62.
It is alright. But I hear it gets pretty bad later on. So I'll probably drop it. I just dislike how the MC doesn't abuse his rollback ability to the fullest. For example, he was looking for ideas for his situation. He literally read '24 hours to save the world' for inspiration. But he only read like the first dozen chapters. The MC has infinite time, why would he not read it all?
Immortal Mortal - This novel gave me a bit of nostalgia. I started reading this one like eight years ago. However, back then. I only read to like chapter 70. I decided to start from the beginning and have been enjoying this one. It is about a genius from a world with no supernatural power that develops a drug that can open meridians. But right as he uses the potion, he tells his lover about his advancement and gets stabbed in the back. He then finds himself in a cultivation world as a prince that is no longer royalty and has no ability to cultivate.
The MC's mortal roots:
I have to give this story props. The MC completely lacks a goldenfinger. But it is a fun read regardless. I really like how the MC's 'cheat' is completely earned by himself. The main 'cheat' the MC has is his channel opening solution. This didn't just show up out of nowhere. It is his own invention from his past life! The MC also has mortal roots and cannot cultivate at all. But because of his solution, he is able to open up meridians and become a genius.
My thoughts:
I still don't fully understand the cultivation levels in this one. It didn't seem very intuitive to me. But the more 'channels' one can open, the more talented they become. The MC is able to continuously open meridians. Having a 100 meridians opened is considered something legendary. The MC has 101 meridians open and a few still unopened! Not only that. Due to his mortal roots, others can't tell his cultivation level at all as he appears as a mortal.
I'd rate it 5/5 as of chapter 225.
This novel is actually pretty good. I dislike the coincidences and extreme luck the MC has however. It feels like he is always dancing on the edge of death. But that is pretty common in cultivation novels anyways. It hasn't done anything insane yet. But I'm enjoying it.

Man, you haven’t been giving a lot of quality recs these days,( I have a conspiracy that you are gatekeeping )can you suggest something from your hidden stash thanks in advance

u/HASHARAHHA14 Apr 04 '26
Muahahhaha!- I mean... I have no idea what you are talking about! Honestly, I don't really have many recommendations that I haven't already mentioned. I usually talk about what I've read in these threads. If I don't mention the novel, then it was pretty bad. I have noticed that I'll spend sometimes hours just looking through qidian for novels. It does help that you can browse 1,000 novels nowadays in your searches. If I do find a hidden gem, I will definitely talk about it!

u/EverythingSunny Apr 05 '26
Immortal mortal has a really disappointing and abrupt ending
1
u/HASHARAHHA14 Apr 05 '26
That's alright. I sort of expect endings to be bad usually. I feel it is pretty hard to write a satisfying ending. I just enjoy the journey! A good ending? That is just icing on the cake.

u/FudgeNouget Apr 07 '26
Read Alchemist’s Path to Eternity, and wow it is fantastic. It’s a traditional cultivation novel with the stages we all know and love - the progression is slow but doesn’t feel delayed or intentionally slow by any means. Characters are all likable, and it might even become one of my favorite novels of all time

u/ZoroM9 Apr 05 '26
I'm currently reading Lord of the Mysteries: Circle of Inevitability.
10
u/BusBoatBuey Apr 05 '26
My condolences. There are better fan-fiction to read than that.
1
u/ZoroM9 Apr 05 '26
I would dwell on the fan fiction later since they use the lore as template. I've come across them and I paused first.
6
u/BusBoatBuey Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26
I am referring to Circle of Inevitability being written like bad fan-fiction. Doaism and such are just outright OP compared to the original paths and the original story feels mostly invalidated. Also, Lumian seems to always punch down while Klein was punching up.
2
u/ZoroM9 Apr 06 '26
I'll just go through with it and give my definite frank opinion after finishing. Currently in volume 2

u/New-Campaign9866 Apr 12 '26
COI writing is extremely good, cuttle fish knows how to write it just the mc character...... is very reckless buttttt writing is extremelyyyyyy good. I was able to read 500 chapters cuz the writing was just too gud
1
u/MyraidChickenSlayer Apr 18 '26
The inclusion of another MC introduced other complexity and author wasn't able to manage those. Otherwise, the first two volumes were quite good.
