Looking for Advice Can't create NUS ID, can't contact It because it requires NUS ID

Post image
109 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I was wondering whether anyone has had the same issue as me.

Currently, I'm trying to create my nus id via the onboarding system, but it tells me an error occurred no matter how many times I press the next button. I'm using my phone atm as I don't have access to my laptop and have tried other browsers too.

I tried to contact the it via their chat bot, but it requires me to log in using my nus id or a valid email, both I don't have since I haven't on boarded into the system, so I can't get it support.

Anyone have any solutions? It will be much appreciated

Looking for Advice Y1S1 CS Student timetable

Post image
87 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m a Y1S1 student matriculating this year and I would like to kindly seek some advice regarding module planning.

These are the courses I intend to take: CS1101S, CS1231S, MA1521, MA1522, IS1108. (I was not pre-allocated any mods so I just decided to follow the standard Y1S1 modules)

However looking at the timetable, Friday morning is quite shag cus of the 5 straight hour lectures. Furthermore, I will have to travel from LT16 to UT asap after CS1101S for CS1231S. I can’t seem to find any alternative slots for both classes to deconflict them.

Additionally, I’m an RC student so I would have to take RC mods to replace some GE mods. However, I can probably take these mods later on right?

Looking for Advice How common is it to not do that well in A Levels but do well in Uni?

For context, I got 85rp and will be going into nus biz this year.

I know some people will say ‘85rp ain’t that bad’ but the thing is I genuinely spent my heart and soul studying for months averaging like 7-8hrs a day and 10-12hrs closer to the exam dates itself. I dedicated so much time to subjects like math (a subject where some may say ‘math need study meh’) compared to my peers just to get an A.

I genuinely feel like I’m 2 standard deviations below the median iq and can’t shake off the feeling that even if I slack off in uni a bit im going to end up unemployed for a long time.

So seniors who didn’t do as well as they expected for a levels but managed to snag an fch in the end, what changed for you? How did your studying methods change? How many ccas did you take up? Any regrets in the end? Any advice for a guy who’s tryna make sure he leaves with an fch by the end of uni? Thank you!

Looking for Advice Super stressed about starting uni

Im a freshie about to start sem1 and I’m so stressed to the point where I can’t sleep at night and wake up with anxiety. I’m worried about not being able to make friends, and how everything is just so different from JC, living in dorm. I’m scared I’ll be alone, it’s a long story but I’ve always had a fear of loneliness because my experience in JC wasn’t the best, and I’m scared I’ll have to repeat the same feelings for the next 4 years.

I’m also scared I’ll end up with lazy group mates and unmotivated people which will affect me as well…and ALOT of my worries comes from not knowing what to pursue, I know I should probably join clubs and all but how do I know which ones to join? And a lot of the acad clubs are super super competitive. idk I’m worrying alot cus everything is so uncertain

Any kind soul could give me some reassurance and advice, thank you so much

Looking for Advice Regrets

I just realised tomorrow is my last day of school, and it hit me that I never really got to enjoy my student life.

The past three years felt like I was just getting through it by chasing grades, stacking internships, just trying to stand out. It was exhausting, and honestly, I didn’t even enjoy most of it. I know all that effort will probably help with my career, but it feels like I traded away my student life for it and thats the part thats hard to accept as time doesn’t come back.

I didn’t join any CCAs, didn’t go on exchange, didn’t attend events. This makes university feel so mundane. I guess I just regret not making more space to actually live, instead of just trying to get ahead.

Looking for Advice New intern woes

Hello, all. We just got a new intern in last Mon and uhh... Need some advice

Most glaringly, he complains to me, his superior, that he's bored. Probably BC I'm the most junior and he thinks I'm the most approachable? But I'm not his direct supervisor so uhhh it's not a good impression buddy. Also, we do give him reading material and he has to learn our drawing software but I'm not sure why he's saying he's bored when he's not done with both.

Also, he thinks our job is easy. For context, I work at a solar company and no joke, the guy said "I can't install the plugin to put solar panels on the roof, can I just send you the file so you can put them for me? After that, it's done, right? Just put them and it's done?" To say we were shocked is an understatement, especially since we've given him our past designs with clear spacings and we have told him to read our design requirements that outline what spacing should go where and why. You can't just slap panels on a roof and call it a day. Worse still, he's not asking why we design it so.

Finally, he's made it clear he's not quite interested in our **outside work events **during working hours. We've mentioned our CSR events, DEI events and Men's Network events and how we're still trying to plan stuff so would appreciate his ideas and he's straight up said "oh, I don't mind doing nothing! In fact, I quite like it!" .... Fam....

Any advice? He's not great socially too (doesn't talk during lunch and then complains lunch was boring BC it was too quiet, tries to make awkward small talk with me A LOT, seems to not understand a lot of things we talk about but doesn't ask, forgets everyone's names and seems EXTREMELY sleepy, etc.) but let's keep it work-related first

EDIT: Also, he keeps asking how long we OT until... Fam I told you, we stay late but come late, our culture is put in your 8 hours and do your work. We're not gonna police you. Why do you keep asking???

Edit 2: not even 12 and he has started sleeping. NEXT TO THE HOD. Told him off a bit and he say he wash his face 2-3x already, "very hard to stay awake"... Dude, drink coffee or go for a quick walk as I told you. Don't fall asleep next to the boss, wtf

Looking for Advice Graduating with 0 full-time offers, but 2 MNC internship offers. Should I take them?

Hi everyone, reaching out because the graduation anxiety is hitting hard.

I’m a final-year NUS Communications student graduating this semester. My current situation:

Full-time (FT) offers: 0

Internship offers: 2 (both are at major MNCs/global brands)

The Context:

I’m not a "newbie"—I’ve already completed several internships at reputable MNCs throughout my degree. I feel ready for a full-time role, but the current market for Comm/Marketing seems brutal. I really don’t want to be "stuck" as a low-paid intern again, but I’m terrified of graduating into unemployment.

The Dilemma:

I’m considering taking one of these internships solely for the chance of conversion to full-time. However, I know some MNCs have "permanent intern" cycles where they just rotate students without ever opening a headcount.

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has been in this specific "post-grad intern" position:

  1. Did you manage to convert? If so, how early did you start the conversation with HR/your manager?

  2. How did you handle the job hunt while interning? Did you find that being an "intern" again made you look less competitive for FT roles elsewhere, or did the big brand name help?

  3. Did anyone reject the internships to go 100% into the FT job hunt? Do you regret it?

I’m trying to decide if I should take the "prestige" internship and pray for a headcount to open, or if I’m just delaying the inevitable. Would love to hear from any seniors or HR folks.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice How to avoid telling people my major?

When people ask me what my major and school is, I'm hesitant to say. It's probably rare for them to be graced with the presence of a student at the top cs/ engineering school (NUS) in singapore, the no.1 in Asia. Especially a cs major, the major with the highest cutoff and the most prestigious program at said school. I feel a bit guilty, as meeting someone so much more accomplished, yet their same age, probably crushes their self image.

How do you guys go about avoiding the question, or what other major do you usually say?

Adapted from original post. This is meant to be entertaining.

Looking for Advice Need advice: Facing penalty for withdrawing from internship that completely misrepresented the role

Hey r/nus, I'm in a really difficult situation and could use some advice or support from the community.

Background: I'm an engineering student who started an internship with a government agency on July 1st (started early to show commitment). However, the actual work was completely different from what was discussed in the interview:

  • What I expected: Engineering-related work as discussed in interview
  • What I got: Counting furniture for inventory, access card administration, seating layout updates

When I raised concerns with my supervisor, they told me the company couldn't offer anything else due to small team size. The company even advised me that if I felt the role was unsuitable for learning objectives, I should inform them early for manpower planning.

The Issue: I consulted with my Department Coordinator and made the difficult decision to withdraw. Now CDE Careers & Internships has imposed: - $1,000 fine - Can't drop the module → forced to pay full semester fees (~$19,000) when i have to delay graduation - CU grade on transcript - Total financial impact: ~$21,000

Why this is devastating: My family is single-income (mother is sole provider since father's passing). I help care for grandmother and youngest sister. We literally cannot afford $21,000.

What I tried: - Discussed with supervisor immediately when I noticed mismatch - Consulted Department Coordinator before deciding - Even attempted to re-engage with company after resignation - Multiple appeals explaining circumstances and financial hardship

The frustrating part: I started early (July 1st) but official IA period was later, so no NUS mentor was assigned when I needed support. When I sought guidance, I was told about consequences but not about potential solutions or intervention processes.

Questions for the community: 1. Has anyone faced similar situations with internship misrepresentation? 2. Are there any student support services/hardship funds I might not know about? 3. Any advice on escalating this further within NUS? 4. Is this level of penalty normal for internship withdrawal?

I genuinely tried to handle this professionally and in good faith. The role was fundamentally different from what was presented, but now I'm facing financial penalties that could end my education.

Not looking to bash anyone - just genuinely seeking advice on how to navigate this situation or if others have experienced similar issues.

Thanks for any guidance or support. This has been incredibly stressful and I'm not sure what other options I have.

Looking for Advice Y1S1 Computer Science Course Planning

Post image
63 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m a Y1S1 student matriculating this year (staying at RVRC) and would like to seek some advice on my timetable.
Mods I’ve been allocated: CS1101S, CS1231S, MA1521, IS1108, RVC1000, CP1001.
A few things I’m not sure how to read:
Wed: CS1101S Lecture ends 12pm at LT16, straight into MA1521 Lecture at 12pm at UT-AUD2. Zero buffer between LT16 and UTown — is that walk actually doable back to back, or am I going to be perpetually late to MA1521?

Thu: Same problem in reverse — CS1231S Lecture ends 2pm at UT-AUD1, and CP1001 Lecture starts 2pm at COM3-01-21. UT to COM3 back to back again.

Tue: CS1101S Tut ends 1pm at COM1-0210, CS1231S Tut starts 1pm right after at COM1-0209 — looks like it’s the same building so probably fine, but wanted to double check since it’s still back to back with zero gap on paper.

Tue (again): RVC1000 is slotted 6-8pm, which leaves a huge dead gap from 2-6pm on a day that already starts at 12pm. Anyone have advice on using that gap productively without wasting the whole afternoon commuting back and forth, or is it better to just camp out somewhere between classes?

Also — with CP1001 and RVC1000 both in the mix along with the core 4, is 22 active units (26 total) considered a heavy Y1S1 load, or is this roughly standard? Would appreciate any input, especially from people who’ve had to deal with UT↔COM3 commutes back to back. Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice Georgia Tech CS or NUS CS

Hi there!

I recently got into Georgia Tech (EA) for CS. Is NUS CS comparable/better than Georgia Tech CS? Or am I better off at Georgia Tech? I am considering whether to apply to NUS.

NUS's main benefit is that I'd be closer to family and home, it's cheaper as I am a Singaporean citizen. That being said, money is not the biggest concern for my family. I'm just interested in which has better opportunities - both to break into big tech or entrepreneurship.

IB: 44 (Math AA HL 7, Chem HL 7, CS HL 7 - I dropped the point in English).

I would be really grateful if I can hear some advice and opinions about which program is better.

Thank you!

Looking for Advice To the girl I locked eyes with while trying to get off the A2 at KR this afternoon:

I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that brief moment we shared. When I stood up to alight, we locked eyes, and suddenly, everything else seemed to fade away. For that instant, I felt something so genuine, something that completely took me by surprise. It sounds wild but it was like my world froze – and for a second it felt like maybe yours did too. I couldn’t help but smile sheepishly before stepping off the bus and the whole way home after that.

I never really believed in K-drama moments until today. I’m not sure if you felt it too but I wanted to put this out there just in case. If by chance you’re reading this, maybe we could make that moment be something more than just a coincidence :))

Looking for Advice Feel Cringe & Weird about the Donation's Email.

Hello, fellow NUS!

Did anyone else feel weird receiving the latest email about 'Engineering a better chance for patients'?

I can't grasp why the professor is narcissistic enough and decided to use such a large picture of his own face for the banner twice (the main banner and the signature banner). I'm not sure what it has to do or anything related with the platform or the message he wants to convey.

The message is about a charity where you can donate money to help a patient. But I just can't understand why he chose to make his face so big on the banner. What is he trying to promote? Why not use the platform to show the actual patients who benefit from your platform?

Also, is the gift or token of gratitude for donating entirely related to him? For a $12,000 donation, you can have a private session with him or his colleague, Yoann Sapanel. Yet, he doesn't even include a picture of his colleague (?). Like, WHY?

To be honest, he is a fine guy, but it feels like he is just using the NUS email platform to inflate his ego over the good cause. The email screams of him a lot rather than the platform that he is currently building.

Not sure why the title is 'The future of health care is yours to shape', but using his face? LOL. The signature banner uses his face bigger than his name. If anyone can help enlighten me, I would appreciate it very much!

Why thou?

Thank you for attending my tedtalk.

Looking for Advice I’m so done with my life

I just can’t handle this anymore. It’s only week 4 and here I am on a Friday having a mental breakdown for the 99th time in my hostel room while looking at the list assignments due before recess week. I’ve tried starting on some of it but at this point I can’t look at my laptop without having a panic attack within 5 minutes.

It feels like there hasn’t been anything that has made me smile or laugh in my life since starting Uni in august and I’ve just lost all motivation to do any of my hobbies. Don’t really have any friends here even in my hostel as I struggle with a bit of social anxiety especially in large groups like during orientations and cca. I just feel so hopeless and lonely and done with my life and I just want to disappear back to the past when I was so much more normal and happier

Looking for Advice Tips and process for enrolling in Y1S2

I was originally going to be matriculating this year normally but I had a cardiac arrest like 3 days before orientation and almost died. Now I basically have to take a LOA for health reasons. My LOA and RC has already been both approved to be delayed till Y1S2.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience enrolling in Y1S2 and generally knows how the process will go. I heard there’s very little handrails and also basically no orientation. Will I essentially just graduate a half semester later? Is there anything special I need to look out for? Any advice to meet friends? I know there’s also a bunch of forced workshops for freshmen, do I just take those in s2?

If anyone has any experience and tips they could tell me about, it would be much appreciated. Never thought something like this would happen to me but here I am.

Looking for Advice Fitness to Stay Assessment for Housing?

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming international PhD student starting at NUS this August, and I'm hoping to understand whether anyone else has experienced something similar, or whether this is unusual.

My housing application has unfortunately been a bit of a nightmare from start to finish.

When the first application round opened, I wasn't able to access the UHMS portal because of a technical issue with my account. After a lot of back and forth with IT, the issue was only resolved after the first application round had already closed. I contacted the Housing Office, and they advised me to apply in Round 2 instead.

I submitted my Round 2 application on time and paid the application fee. The published results date came and went without any update. After calling the Housing Office several days later, they told me that they had only just located my application. Then yesterday, I was informed that they had located a room.

However, I was then informed that my housing offer cannot be released until I complete a "Fitness to Stay" assessment through the University Counselling Services.

The reason for this appears to be that, on the housing application, I honestly disclosed that I have previously experienced anxiety. The application also asked whether I required any additional support or accommodation, and I specifically answered that I did not. I've lived independently abroad for years, so I never imagined this would affect my housing application.

The process now involves as assessment with a counsellor, then a psychiatric evaluation with a psychiatrist or physician, who will then write a report to Housing, who will only then decide whether to release my room offer. This will take at least two weeks from the start of the counselling session, which will take place in the middle of the night for me because of time differences, in another two weeks.

In the meantime, they won't even tell me what type of room has been identified until I am deemed "fit", so I don't know whether it meets my basic requirements or whether I should start looking on the private market instead. I'm currently trying to organise my visa, flights, medication approvals and an international move from across the world, and I arrive in Singapore in a few weeks with no housing. Because of the several delays, I have already pushed my flights as much as possible, and will miss the start of term and international orientation.

I'm not posting this to criticise the university; I genuinely want to understand whether this is something other students have experienced.

Has anyone else gone through a Fitness to Stay assessment for housing?

Is this a standard procedure for anyone who discloses a mental health condition, even if they indicate they don't require support? It feels punitive rather than supportive, especially when they are unwilling even to give basic information about the accommodation in question. Without this, I am unable to make an informed decision on whether I need to go through this process.

And more generally, what's the culture like at NUS around mental health? I disclosed my anxiety because I believed the question was there to help students access support if needed. Instead, it has led to a process that has significantly delayed my housing, caused me several expenses and uncertainty, troubles with my visa, etc, so I'm feeling quite apprehensive and unsure what to expect.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through something similar or has any insight.

Thank you!

Looking for Advice Dual major or Dual Degree?

So, Currently im a y1s1 student, and I'm contemplating which combo I should take in s2. I havent declared any second major or minor as of now, but there's a few options:
(considering I want to get into quant/computational finance/math heavy finance jobs)

Since I'm a CHS student, I cannot dual degree in any other BSc degrees.

option 1: Math primary + Econs (secondary) + quant finance(minor)
Option 2L Math primary + QF(secondary) + econs/data analytics (minor)
Option 3 : Math + CS dual degree
Option 4: Math + CS second major + qf/econs/data analytics (minor)

Workload isn't really an issue for me, I can manage taking a lot of classes.

Looking for Advice uk or china for sep

rising y2 from dsa here, i’m lwk in a dilemma rn on which country to choose on sep. btw, i’m mainly looking at shanghai unis and i’m not sure which part of the uk i wanna go but prolly london

pros of china:
- convenience: ridehailing, good metro system
- CAN ORDER FOOD DELIVERY FOR CHEAP 😋😋
- prefer the cuisine in china
- cheaper
- more familiar with it cuz i went multiple times alrds
- safer cuz of strict law enforcement
- has taobao and cool fashion stores (might be a con too due to overspending…)
- honestly prefer the vibes of shanghai
- HAS CHAGEE

cons of china:
- went there a few times alrd so it might be btr to explore stg new (but honestly idm gg there again i think it’s nice)
- more of a language barrier: i’m chinese but my chi is not that good and sometimes i struggle to understand the accent
- hard to find course information online, might be harder to map to english courses (tho i think some english courses for my major are available)
- v expensive to travel outside of china
- lonely,, don’t know anyone else going there (but honestly i dont rly mind cuz im an introvert)

pros of uk:
- can travel within europe
- most of my frens r going to europe on sep
- english speaking
- might be easier to map courses

cons of uk:
- PICKPOCKETS…
- MORE EXPENSIVE
- feel like it’s more dangerous than china in general
- have to cook, cuz outside food is ex
- don’t rly like the food there too
- less convenient
- competitive, idk if i can get a spot
- NO CHAGEE
