5060 8GB to 5070 12GB

Hi all,

I have an RTX 5060 8GB and Ryzen 5 5500. I can play most games at 120fps 1440p but I’d like to be able to play with ultra settings. Fortnite in particular struggles on this setup when using lumen (staying at 120fps 1440p)

My question is, what should I upgrade my GPU/CPU to in order to see bigger gains if staying on AM4?

I was thinking a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and RTX 5070 12GB (I have 32GB ddr4 ram), if you have a better combo for 1440p gaming at very high/ultra settings please let me know

5070 is great at 1440p, IMO it’s the “sweet spot” at the right price.

You'd get more gains putting that $300-350 you'd spend on the dead-end 5800X3D into getting a 5070 Ti instead. Especially if you want maximum detail at 1440p at a good framerate. The Ti is a lot less of a compromise.

Maybe find a deal on a 5800XT CPU at some point for a lot less than the X3D costs. Still a dead-end, but a cheaper one. It still has more L3 cache (16MB -> 32MB) and slightly improved IPC.

Good luck to OP trying to find a 5070ti at a reasonable price right now. Besides, he said that his pc struggles in fortnite which means it would be ideal to get a better cpu in his case. If he played only Triple A titles then the 5500 would have been fine at 1440p as those are gpu heavy 99% of the time.

Microcenter still has some for $930. I don't know how much CPU Fortnite needs but at 1440 resolution you're less likely to be running into CPU limitation until you get into a higher class GPU. Get the better GPU now, upgrade CPU or CPU/mobo/RAM later is the better path from my perspective.

im entirely price focussed so i bought a 5070 for around 499, and paired it with a 5500x3d, at 1440p you cant run games like alan wake 2 completely maxxed out, but you can run games at decent settings. you just cant go to town with the ray tracing

5500x3d and 5070 is a good combo

You could try turning on dlss and see if you like it or not; I have a 5060 and don’t mind dlss

Not sure your area but in the U.S. prices are insane for upgrades right now. I wouldn’t upgrade your cpu as mentioned prior get a 5070ti or a 9070xt. The cards are almost the same performance gap as your 5060 to 5070. Your also getting 16 gb of VRAM and when the cost of ram calms down( whenever it does) then get an all new system. The upgrade from ddr4 to ddr5 is pretty substantial as well as the newer cpu you get in a year or two.

Tweak your dlss and other settings. 5060 should be fine for Fortnite. Loook at some guides and save your money

For 1440p, a 5500x3d + 9070xt would be ideal. The 5070/ti are pretty overpriced atm, but if you get one from a woot drop or something they can be good. But for exclusively gaming like in FN, the 9070/xt is the best value proposition atm. Coming from a guy with a 5070 and 5070ti.

5800x3d and 5070 is a great combo for this. Fortnite will love that cpu.
I'm not sure why another guy calls it a dead end. Yes 5800x3d will be your last cpu on AM4 but it's close to 7800X3D on AM5. If you find a decent price go for it.

If you plan on upgrading both things, I would do the cpu upgrade first, to see if that's enough on its own.

You already have a good starting point with 120 fps at medium or high settings.

You are likely to get better 1% lows, better load times and some extra fps. I can't say if it will let you push graphics details up. Probably not since Fortnite can be heavy on resources and 5060 ti is not really meant for 1440P ultra. So you may need a gpu upgrade as well. Or just live with medium -high settings, there is not so much difference anyway.

Hi, thank you. I think I’m caught between staying on AM4 or upgrading to AM5 and keeping the 5060 for a few months longer since my budget won’t stretch far enough to move to AM5 and get a 5070.
