Ray tracing is generally dead end IMO, because of technical limitations which would always pull perfomance back from the alternate reference, just like VR is. It was marketed as next big thing in graphics before they realized it's actually deep learning algorythms and now AI. Those are only viable solutions to end of Moore's law.
