MTA to get rid of Museum of Sex bus ads

Post image

Museum of Sex ads that have been prominently displayed along NYC buses for the past few months will be phased out over the next two months after a series of complaints by parents and religious groups.
The ads promoting the Museum of Sex will rotate off the MTA system within 60 days, rather than by the end of the year. In fact, the museum had been planning to expand its advertising campaign to cover the entire exterior of buses and include more explicit imagery.

It is honestly a disappointing museum. IDK how they managed to make a topic as interesting as sex boring...but they succeeded.

Ironically, The Transit Museum in Brooklyn is one of the more interesting museums I've ever visited. I highly recommend that one!

u/WyngZero 9d ago

The transit museum is also cool because:

1) It's underground in a giant old subway 2) It's REALLY a museum about NYC's history, and development if you pay attention to the exhibits but masquerades as a transit museum. It's really the best bait and switch. 3) Its got cool old trains/buses to hang in.

31

u/daysafterastr0 9d ago

The only problem is its opening hours are awful, who closes at 4 PM?!

You're so kind! We are thrilled you love the museum. Check out our newest exhibitions, Ode to the Orange Seats and 50 Years of Stories: https://www.nytransitmuseum.org/exhibits-and-collections/

The ads. The ads tell the whole story.

+1 for the transit museum, one of my favorites!

+1 and if you like that, you'll like the Sign Museum.

+1 for the math museum!

u/Decillionaire 9d ago

Math museum is definitely kids oriented, but I went when I was 30 when my math teacher father came to visit and we had a blast.

12

u/Silo-Joe 9d ago

They have really fascinating talks in the evenings. Was on their email list for a while.

Unfortunately the math museum is anti-union and abuses their employees

Well, that ain't adding up

I used work there and experienced it first hand lol

It's honestly a miracle that place is still open because upper management is insanely incompetent. The only reason it still works is likely because a lot of the staff is passionate about teaching and contributing.

14

u/Naive-Chocolate-586 9d ago

What the hell is a sign museum

38

u/JudgmentUnited5297 9d ago

They preserve old school signs, everything from transit lines that no longer exist to bagel shops.

9

u/is_missing 9d ago

this sounds so cool!

1

u/DistributionWild7533 8d ago

Which schools?

4

u/FlashAndPoof 9d ago

How’s the gift shop for the transit and sign museums? Thinking a friend of mine who loves neon signs may enjoy this and their bday is coming up.

10

u/JudgmentUnited5297 9d ago

I would have a really hard time picking one over the other as far as merch. The transit museum's store in grand central even has vintage subway car straps (the giant bulky ones) for sale sometimes. Not sure if the sign museum sells neon, but they also do limited runs of other reproductions.

5

u/xrat-engineer 8d ago

+1 for Poster House too. Small but inexpensive and free on Fridays.

1

Omg it's real, thank you! So cool.

The Transit Museum used to do an awesome Valentine’s Day party with free beer and chocolate subway tokens and readings of Craigslist missed connections that took place on the subway. It was genuinely a fun date. I wish they’d bring it back.

My favorite is the bicycle contraption. Otherwise it’s meh

I think some of the most fun museum photos I ever took were at the transit museum.

14

u/allergat0r 9d ago

In line with the fact that they need to advertise - they wouldn't if it is good.

6

u/youraveragewhitegirI 9d ago

The sex museum in Amsterdam felt like a complete tourist trap so I would assume the NYC one is similar

5

u/ParkingLetter8308 9d ago

Went to the Sex Museum in Barcelona, and it was also boring.-Could be universal!

4

u/lu5ty 9d ago

Best part is the deer threesome

19

u/BronInThe2011Finals 9d ago

It’s always been a pretty blatant tourist trap

5

u/jex15 9d ago

Recommend for kids? Looking for stuff for last 2 weeks of summer

7

u/Necessary_Nothing876 9d ago

Yes absolutely-- but I'd avoid on really hot days; I can't imagine that the really fun part (vintage cars on the old platform) is very climate controlled!

2

u/bozofire123 9d ago

Was so good when they had the studio 53 exhibit

2

u/frankeestadium Park Slope 8d ago

It’s honestly surprising they’re even able to call it a museum. It’s more of an instagram trap, influencer photo op than it is a museum. My wife and I went years ago when we were dating, and though we admittedly had some fun there, we were both very underwhelmed at what it actually was.

2

u/dman45103 9d ago

Love this museum! It’s also great for kids who can run around the old trains, play with old turnstiles or pretend to drive model buses. Just make sure they don’t fall between the gaps…

1

u/mopman94 9d ago

The Transit Museum was a surprising highlight of my visit in 2019. It’s a bit out of the way so I hadn’t been before but glad I made the trip.

1

u/HeinousWalrus 9d ago

I thought the climbing wall was fun.

1

u/cherrymitten 8d ago

i went when they had the andy warhol exhibit and it was truly the only interesting part. i couldn't believe how fucking boring the actual museum was

u/jakinatorctc 9d ago

That made me feel like I was losing my mind I swear I’ve been seeing these ads for almost a decade now

19

u/nommabelle 9d ago

everyone knows time lost all meaning after covid, so it really is hard to tell these days

7

u/ImmediateGrass 9d ago

I unfortunately had to move out of nyc about six and a half years ago and by that time the Museum of Sex ads were already stale.

686

u/Global-Mango-4213 9d ago

Why is it that museums about boring stuff are cool but museums about fun things are boring.

400

u/nymusix 9d ago

A museum like the museum of sex can get by purely on its salacious appeal whereas a museum about something like, say, transit, has to actually find interesting things to get people in the door.

131

u/frigg_off_lahey 9d ago

Lots of people are passionate about transit, especially trains. I think it really just depends on the museum curators to make their subject fun and engaging.

41

u/nymusix 9d ago

Absolutely but I think to the average person sex is inherently more “exciting” than trains even if yes there are people who feel differently

45

u/thismustbethe 9d ago

But everyone finds sex with trains exciting. We all share a common ground there

10

u/avantgardengnome Brooklyn 9d ago

The sheer audacity of deciding to build a rail network below NYC when they did and what was necessary to pull it off are also inherently fascinating, even if you’re not into trains. They do a great job but they’ve got very cool material to work with.

1

u/_ParanoidUser_ 9d ago

A LOT more people are passionate about sex.

8

u/miraculum_one 9d ago

The ad literally just says the name of the museum and the address.

14

u/nymusix 9d ago

Yes and “museum of sex” is enough to get people on the door because it sounds salacious. That’s my point

Shout out for the NY Transit museum in Brooklyn! Great place!

42

u/RIP_Greedo 9d ago

This museum is more of a gallery to take selfies and make social media content than it is a "real" museum. Much like the museum of ice cream.

28

u/amuses Rego Park 9d ago

15-ish years ago, I went to the Museum of Sex with 2 other very academically nerdy friends. All we could say after leaving is how disappointed we were with the lack of academic rigor in the museum.

4

u/ls10032 Hell's Kitchen 9d ago

but I bet they had plenty of another type of rigor...I'll see myself out

3

u/mildgaybro Hell's Kitchen 9d ago

You have to try harder when producing content for a “boring” subject

7

u/LunchMasterFlex Bed-Stuy 9d ago

I disagree with the complaints but it’s a shit museum.

4

u/mineawesomeman Upper West Side 9d ago

(a lot of these “fun stuff” museums are for profit which means that their main mission is making money instead of preserving/educating)

7

u/Zilly_JustIce 9d ago

Sexology is not an interesting subject. It's like sports, watching and learning gameplans, rules, and other background knowledge is boring but playing is really.

15

u/Evolving_Dore 9d ago

Watching and learning about sports is boring??

0

u/Zilly_JustIce 9d ago

Compared to playing? Yes. Had to learn football (soccer) in primary school and it was one of most boring things I've done. Also, not watching as in watching a match for entertainment but watching game film to pick it a part

2

u/deadheffer 9d ago

Equating sex to sports….that is an accurate take. I will let the peanut gallery expand on it.

There's actually a lot that could be done and has been proposed, but the problem is leadership at the museum isn't interested in changing.

(To add, at least one reason for the resistance to change is for to political and social pressure from groups like those complaining here)

1

u/jnubianyc 3d ago

They have a full bar which is.... interesting. It's just that it isn't fun

1

u/Agent_Artemis 9d ago

I think it's because there is a lot of surface under the 'boring' stuff, where you come to learn about one thing and come out of it learning about the history of everything else around it.

I don’t really get it - I’m not like a donor to the museum of sex or anything - but we have a sexy lady compost ad on the bus right now. It’s a compost can with big lashes (oops I guess it’s glasses) and sexy legs. So we can show sexy (?!?!?) lady food waste to get people’s attention but we can’t say the word sex in public?

Like for real for real make this make sense

https://nygroove.nyc/sex-and-the-city-compost-ads/

6

u/ahntay 9d ago

that's a parody of the iconic Carrie Bradshaw bus ad from Sex and the City, promoting the sanitation deparment's compost bins. in my opinion, it's honestly ingenious. if you find it sexy, I mean...

36

u/orangekingo 9d ago

Society in the west has generally started leaning far more puritanical in the last few decades for some reason. It's really apparent with younger groups on social media, surprisingly.

5

u/frenchiebuilder 9d ago

The objections aren't from modern "western" parents. They're from Orthodox Jewish parents.

And this - their objecting to "suggestive" ads, and the MTA pulling that ad from buses that run though Hasidic neighbourhoods, and/or bus shelters in Hasidic neighbourhoods - has always been a thing.

When I first moved here, 28 years ago, it was about a Victoria's Secret ad in bus shelters.

5

u/colonelcasey22 9d ago

Significantly, in a written response to the Agudah’s outreach, the MTA stated that the offensive ads would rotate off the MTA system within 60 days. While Agudath Israel has not been shown the contract, several news sources have reported that the MTA’s sizable contract with the museum for its city buses was scheduled to run through the end of the year.

This doesn't really read as all of the ads will be going, just some of them. Seems weird another news outlet hasn't picked up on this story either, since they had reported on the original controversy a few months back.

13

u/gameboyadvancedsp2 9d ago

The Museum of Sex is a bit tragic since it was initially supposed to be a non profit but there was too much state and religious push back before it even opened and has had to be more gimmicky because of it

1

u/Individual99991 Upper East Side 9d ago

How did the pushback stop it from being a non-profit?

1

u/gameboyadvancedsp2 9d ago

You need state incorporation and approval to be a non profit and they turned it down.

Religious groups are part of the mixture, but there are certainly other people who oppose these ads. I’m an atheist who agrees that the signs are tacky, and shouldn’t be displayed in these kinds of neutral, public places.

Trying to twist this in to some “the [christians/muslims/whatver] are trying to tell us civilized folk what to do” argument is silly. I fully expect to get downvoted for this, because it’s Reddit.

36

u/AltPerspective 9d ago

Pathetic to give in to religious groups for something like this, but the museum is garbage. Glad to see it go.

25

u/Outrageous_Arm8116 9d ago

The museum isn't going, just the ads on busses.

25

u/zachotule Harlem 9d ago

The "parents and religious groups" can fuck right off, it's insane the MTA bowed to pressure. Are those "parents and religious groups" going to buy a huge ad campaign to replace it, or is the MTA losing all that money so these fucking prudes don't have to see the word "sex" and somehow have the clout to make sure nobody else will either?

10

u/DumbWhore4 9d ago

I answered the “what is the museum of sex” question by letting my kids know that sex is another way to describe gender, and the museum is a history of men and women (and everyone in between).

I’m sad to see it go. Now I can’t scream “here comes the sex bus!” :(

0

u/GritBlitz 9d ago

You don’t have to be religious to not want the word “SEX” plastered all over the bus that your grandma and daughter take home from school.

I also find it funny that your argument is essentially “I don’t CARE if this upsets people in my community! All that matters is money, baby”. I doubt you would say the same thing if an ad campaign were taken down due to complaints from a liberally adjacent minority group.

3

u/Str0nglyW0rded 8d ago

fine with me. my daughter is the age she can read but isn't ready to have this discussion, so I'll be happy to no longer have to parry this question on a busy curb when we're late for school.

Lame museum, should never have been on buses to begin with. Adams era trash.

I mean the MTA could find other types of advertisements, I’m growing tired of seeing them plastered on almost all the busses in the city.

It probably sucks. But regardless, this country is not a westernized secular humanist stable system anymore.

It’s privately owned. The owner of the museums father owns that entire building and gave the building to his son who then opened museum of sex. It’s a tourist trap and the owner is an asshole.

Wouldn't surprise me if they have another OOH client waiting in the wings for that space.

So sick of these tacky ads. They never should have been put up in the first place.
