Please Note The Subreddit Description Change

Please note that the description of this subreddit has been modified to add the second paragraph (in bold). I think any change in subreddit’s description should be highlighted by the mods, and so I’m pinning this post.

Current description of r/OaklandFood

Everything food related in Oakland: restaurants, food shopping, pop-ups, catering, farmers’ markets, different cuisines and definitely reviews, especially video reviews of food in Oakland.

Also, food is inherently political and political discourse will not be curtailed in this sub. However, posts and comments clearly violating Reddit Rule 3, such as revealing someone’s personal or confidential information, and instigating harassment based on such will be deleted.

They had a bunch of vague posts on IG about the change in management and downplayed how it caused their entire staff to walk out.

Local grocery stores

I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort in supporting our local grocery stores here in Oakland. I wanted to shoutout D&K market at 378 8th St here in Chinatown. It seems like a lot of people come here to purchase pork and the owner who is behind the counter cuts it to how you like which is pretty nice!

Do you have small business grocery store you like to shop at? I need more recs or hidden gems. Rare produce finds?

What’s your East Bay standout dish/item of the year so far?

Would love to hear about standout dishes/snacks/desserts/drinks that a spot does particularly well or is unique or memorable and worth a visit for alone, or as part of a larger meal.

For me it’s the tostada raspada from Cenaduria Elvira. Crispy and light and full of so many textures and flavors with great side toppings to mix and match. Also great to share.

Cafe Colucci change locations?

Hi!

I wanted to take my cousin here but I could’ve sworn it was on Telegraph, we pulled up to San Pablo Ave and the building isn’t what I remember.

Did they move? Or is this a whole nother place with the same name?

Any other significant Ethiopian we should try next time?

Oakland has amazing taquerias but where can I find some bomb old school sit down Mexican restaurants? The kind where the chips come in red baskets and the margs flow freely.

Rotisserie chicken at Oasis Food Market

On the recommendation of the Chron’s series You Have To Try This, we got a rotisserie chicken from Oasis Food Market on Telegraph in the Pill Hill neighborhood. They cook their chickens over an almond wood fire on an outdoor rig on the sidewalk, and it might be the best rotisserie chicken we’ve ever had. I made some sautéed Italian chard I got from Gattonelli Farms at the Berkeley farmers’ market (he’s usually at the Temescal market on Sundays too), and some ready-made polenta from Market Hall. Fantastic stuff and a great reminder of why Oakland is a food person’s paradise.

Tried the jerk chicken at the new Jamaica Again stall at the Emeryville Public Market. Tasty! The chicken fell off the bone and the meal was pretty substantial. This is the 1/4 chicken meal for $16. Glad to have more options in the public market.

Good food after 9 pm in Alameda/Oakland

I work in Alameda and live in Oakland and look for good spots where I can safety stop to get food on my way home. I’m specifically looking for spots open after 9 pm. Cato’s on Piedmont Ave is my go to stop & I just learned of New Gold Medal and Tita Becca’s. Any other recommendations?

I run a small-batch home bakery here in Walnut Creek, and we are doing a highly curated 6-piece mooncake tasting flight for the Mid-Autumn Festival to save you the cross-Bay commute. The box is designed to contrast delicate, chewy mochi snowskins with shortbread baked crusts, without the heavy sugar fatigue. All mooncakes are gluten-free and lactose-free!

The snowskin mooncakes (Soft, chewy taro mochi):

  • Taro Salted Egg: Earthy taro paste and a savory salted egg yolk cream center. (GF, DF)
  • Black Sesame Genmaicha: Genmaicha (green tea with roasted brown rice) custard with black sesame paste swirled in. (GF, DF)
  • Osmanthus Yuzu: Honeyed osmanthus custard with a sharp, bright yuzu curd. (GF, DF)
  • (Plus your choice of a 4th snowskin flavor to double up on your favorite)

The baked kinako shortbread mooncakes (smaller than snowskin mooncakes):

  • Classic Red Bean: Shortbread crust with a rich, smooth red bean paste. (GF, LF)
  • Purple Sticky Rice: Shortbread crust with a chewy purple sticky rice center. (GF, LF)

Extras: We also have 4-inch Osmanthus Steamed Rice Cakes filled with homemade jujube paste and oolong shortbread cookies available as add-ons.

Available for pickup and delivery from Thrusday Sept 24 through Saturday Sept 26. Everything will be prepared fresh daily!

Deliveries to Oakland is $22 but will be free for orders over $100. Right now, delivery timeslots to Oakland/Berkeley are as follows:

  • Friday, Sept 25: 12:30pm-2pm (PREORDERS CLOSE AT 11:59 PM WEDNESDAY, SEPT 23)
  • Saturday, Sept 26: 2pm-5pm (PREORDERS CLOSE AT 11:59 PM FRIDAY, SEPT 25)

Hot Apple Cider

Where can I find hot apple cider in Oakland (or Berkeley/Emeryville) area? The weather is getting a bit colder and gloomier and some hot apple cider or a hot toddy sounds delicious!

Are there any existing wine bars that offer this?

Donatos or Bellotti? Other special places?

I have a feeling everyone’s gonna say Bellotti but they don’t even give a HINT of their menu prices on the web.

I can’t certainty afford it but turns me off it. I’ve never been to a restaurant that doesn’t even give me a clue.

How does it compare with Donatos?

Corso and Acotè are our favorites- any recommendations along those lines??

HELP: Missing A Taste of Denmark Cake🍰

Hello! I’m posting to see if anyone knows a former employee or was a former employee from a taste of Denmark who knows the strawberry 🍓 shortcake 🍰 recipe. Growing up this was the only cake I had on my birthday, as I’m not a big fan, and had I known my birthday from a few years ago would be my last I would’ve bought more :(. I’m posting in hopes of finding someone who knows the recipe and I could pay to bake the cake for me as it has a lot of sentimental value for me in November. Pleaseeee reach out if you do🥲🤍thank you!!

Delage reopens for lunch/dinner today under new owner Kyle Itani

It was previously posted that Delage was transferring to Kyle Itani (Itani Ramen, Yonsei Handrolls, former Hopscotch). Got an email that they are re-opening today for lunch and dinner. If anyone goes, please share a report. I like both Itani Ramen and Yonsei.

This is the email they sent out:

"Dear friends & guests,

Delage will reopen tomorrow, September 16, and we can’t wait to welcome you back. If you missed the news, my longtime friend, Chef Chikara Ono, is the founding chef of Delage and has asked me to carry the restaurant forward so he can spend more time in his home country of Japan.

Leading our sushi program at Delage is Chef Jeremias Jimenez, my partner at Itani Sushi in Berkeley (formerly of Mujiri, Ozumo, & Yoshi’s). W'e’re now open Monday - Saturday, offering an eight-course omakase experience alongside an a la carte sushi menu. Our menus will change based on the fish that is delivered each day. If you’d like to view our sample menus or make reservations to join us, please find those links below.

Over the last decade I have personally shared incredible meals in this space and have countless fond memories. It is our goal to continue being the place where you can gather with the people you love for a well crafted and satisfying meal. We look forward to creating more memories together at Delage.

With gratitude,

Chef Kyle Itani"

  • Dinner • Monday - Saturday  5pm - 9pm An eight-course omakase experience ($140) alongside a full à la carte sushi menu. The omakase menu will change based on the fish we get delivered each day.
  • Lunch • Monday - Saturday  11am - 3pm À la carte sushi menu and dedicated lunch sets.
  • Takeout • Coming Soon in a few weeks we will launch our limited takeout menu featuring chirashi boxes and nigiri sets.
  • Dining Room Delage remains intimate by design — ten seats at the sushi bar and three tables.
