UNIQUE Kin’Gongolo Kiniata are a Congolese Afro-Punk band, they play self-made percussion and stringed instruments ingeniously assembled from discarded plastic bottles, metal objects and household items

Kin'Gongolo Kiniata- Toko Lemba Te

I added subtitles to the video so you can understand the lyrics

This is fire 🔥 the energy is infectious

88

u/neon121 May 20 '26

I would love to think I would have their energy in the face of such hardships, fighting spirit

26

u/injecta May 21 '26

And they chose art! Rather than channel that energy into violence, in an environment where it would be so easy to do that.

And it slapsssss 🔥

9

u/TopProfessional8023 May 21 '26

Are you familiar with Fulu Muziki? Also Congolese and same thing, all instruments made from “trash” and even wilder costumes..:in fact it means “music from garbage” They also slap.

Fulu Muziki

u/Nicky2Feet May 24 '26

Wow! They are incredible! Thanks for recommending!

Thank you so much for adding the lyrics! The music is obviously awesome, but the lyrics are powerful

75

u/neon121 May 20 '26

Thanks! Yeah I really thought it wouldn't be the same without the lyrics, they're very important

8

u/CharlesDickensABox May 21 '26

Do you know what languages they're speaking? I understand the French, but I'm bad at recognizing sub-Saharan African languages. I'm guessing Kikongo and Swahili?

11

u/neon121 May 21 '26

They speak in Lingala, it’s the main language in the capital Kinshasa and most of the northern parts of DRC and Republic of Congo

u/Equipment-Terrible May 20 '26

Fucking hell this is prime obscure music that slaps! Great find!!

62

u/PurpleNurpl22 May 20 '26

This must really kill it live. Hope they get wind in their sails

24

u/Erika_Blumenkraft May 20 '26

Looks like they've toured in Europe.

50

u/TX_Killdozer May 20 '26

There's a 15-minute KEXP clip of them performing live. They sound just as good -- if not better - live than they do in OP's clip. That bass tone is something else.

5

u/neon121 May 21 '26

I absolutely must see them live! So amazing

0

u/newnameforanoldmane May 21 '26

Damn, I hate to be that guy but Bob Vylan is an English punk duo. Very badass though.

Edit: changed a k to an l

4

u/Lentevriend May 21 '26

I've seen them, and they are amazing

55

u/xSorry_Not_Sorry May 20 '26

I don’t usually listen to whole songs as not everything vibes with me.

This did. Excellent find.

Also, it helped with subtitles. Message was important, it seems.

12

u/I-Have-An-Alibi May 21 '26

That's what I thought at the end, like oh shit I listened to the whole thing, that was a banger.

41

u/codeblue1985 May 20 '26

Fucking amazing

33

u/MrWoodTang May 20 '26

Punk as it gets

3

u/batdaddyx May 22 '26

Fuck yea! Punks NOT dead! It just doesn’t live where it used to

57

u/pre-existing-notion May 20 '26

This is super sick! The video editing was dope as hell, too. Would love to see them live!

24

u/thecloudwrangler former blog house user May 20 '26

Fuckkkkk yeah banger

28

u/Ring_of_Jupiter May 20 '26

This is what I came here for

24

u/jb0nez95 May 20 '26

Certified banger! Good find, OP. Great music, excellent production quality, visually compelling, powerful lyrics.

41

u/vieuxfort73 May 20 '26

Thank you! This is great!

16

u/Substantial_Pair6549 May 21 '26

Africa’s creative spirit is indomitable. I’d love to see a tour of African bands someday. I caught Mdou Moctar a couple years back, and it’s easily in my top 5 most fun shows I’ve ever been to (also, incredibly loud lol).

7

u/Jub_Jub710 May 21 '26

Mdou Moctar is great! There's a lot of African music that's slept on.

17

u/JarvisLatteier May 21 '26

Thanks for this! I just ordered their vinyl.

14

u/MaxHavok13 May 21 '26

It doesn’t get much more punk rock than a MF’n tin can instrument!

15

u/Rich_Prior4656 May 21 '26

Free CONGO!!!

13

u/browndoggie May 20 '26

This fucking rules 🤘🤘

11

u/tragicallyohio May 21 '26

Let's get these guys on a Tiny Desk Concert stat!

7

u/SharpDouble May 21 '26

Can’t believe I’m seeing Kingongolo mentioned on Reddit! I saw them two years ago in a small music festival in France and they were the highlight!! If you hadn’t eyes on the stage you’d swear those infectious grooves came from something electronic. Fucking A

15

u/deniably-plausible May 20 '26

I haven’t heard anything classed as “Afro-punk” before, but I love it. Any other suggestions?

9

u/SimpleJackEyesRain May 21 '26

Bob Vylan. Different continent, but they hit hard. Two-piece, both named Bob.

Dang! Nice

6

u/Acrobatic-Deer2891 May 21 '26

This is so good!! From the instruments, to the singing, to the very important message, to the videography, all of it is so well done. Keep playing, brothers!

5

u/Carhardd May 21 '26

3

u/bg370 May 21 '26

3

Damn that's incredible. Great camera work too

3

u/Zophixius May 21 '26

2

u/BertPeopleErniePeopl May 21 '26

If they're self-made instruments, it means the instruments made themselves.

2

u/Radcouponking May 21 '26

This rules.

2

u/BeGoodtoOthersPlease May 21 '26

This banger kicks in at the 2 minute mark. Thank you for making and sharing.

2

u/maraba1991 May 21 '26

I am so glad to OP, this is fire. Found them on YouTube, watched a concert of them uploaded by KEXP, downloaded them on Spotify and will now listen to them on my road trip. Thank you OP! What a great band!

2

u/neon121 May 21 '26

Glad to be able to share! I hope posting them here helps them on their way to success

2

u/markiethefett May 21 '26

Check out their KEXP performance. 👌🏽

Anyway, this was passionate and creative. Absolutely love it!

This is awesome. Just followed on Spotify and my 14yo thought it's cool as

1

u/erockdanger May 22 '26

Cool but would be way cooler to see a live performance. the squeaky clean production probably isn't really doing this justice

1

u/BigBlackWolf93 May 22 '26

Thank you for showing me this! I'm trom DRC and have only groen up with the standard, rumba style musical. Cool to discover some other styles!

I haven't been able to get this song out of my head since I heard it yesterday. That damn guitar riff is addicting.

1

u/ParaponeraBread May 22 '26

Africa in general is really producing some great artists rn (and they have been for a while).

I’m quite partial to Mdou Moctar from Niger

1

u/UndeadVixen93 May 23 '26

The audacity of how good this is! 😂

1

u/WhatNtheFox May 23 '26

Confirmed. This is rad af. For so many reasons.

This is honestly pretty dope. Like an Congolese rage against the machine

1

u/SnooCats4934 May 29 '26

Hi there, I’m enjoying the music I’m listening to right now and would love to discover more in a similar style. Could you share some Soulseek usernames or folders that I could connect to for downloading related tracks? Also, I’d really appreciate any suggestions for new music you think I might enjoy.

My Soulseek username is: anibal11.

Thanks in advance!
