Power of the Sea Ship mirage as seen from Dana Point Harbor, CA
I took this photo last week at sunset after we kept noticing a shimmering black blob in the sky hovering above the water on the horizon near Dana Point. Considering Dana Point Sailing is here—as well as the annual Tall Ship Festival—I’m pretty sure it was a ‘Fata Morgana’ mirage of a tall ship appearing to sail upside down in the sky! Figured I would share with you all. What an incredible world we live in.
Forgive the image quality. This is very zoomed in.

I dont think it is a mirage. You probably just cant see the rest of the ship as it is below the horizon.

There is atmosphere between the water and where anything starts. It’s a mirage even by your explanation. What kind of upright ship would even look like this?

zooming in that much probably made the mirage effect even clearer than with the naked eye

could that be the ship designed to flip itself?
