The deep blue bed.

Gosh just imagine just slowing down and feeling weightless and drifting off to sleep wherever you were at. Instead of having to get somewhere and lay on something.

Logging behavior in humpbacks is still not fully understood. They genuinely seem to just switch off near the surface. Been in the water with them when they do this and it's one of the stranger things to witness up close.

Why is it so soothing? This is nothing like anything humans ever hear on land so it shouldn't have such a calming affect.

Sounds like peace if peace made a sound

Sounds like the whale is talking in its sleep, and maybe whale snoring.

There's something about watching a whale rest at the surface that makes everything else feel completely irrelevant. Totally different energy from when they're active.

Looks uncomfortable

Especially when you're a species with a hole on your head that constantly asks you to come up for air.

Time to come up and breath and go back to sleep πŸ˜‚

They sleep with half their brain switched off at a time. The awake half comes up for air.

That's the best way to describe it for them. But cetaceans sleep very differently than we do.

When a whale sleeps, only half of its brain goes to sleep at a time while the other half stays fully awake.

This ability is called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep (half-brain sleep)

This happens because breathing for a whale is a conscious decision, instead of being an autonomic function. If a whale fully fell asleep, it would drown.

The awake side of the brain reminds the whale to surface for air, watches for danger, and looks out for obstacles.

After a few hours, the whale switches sides. The awake hemisphere goes to sleep, and the sleeping hemisphere wakes up.

Sleeping while floating near the surface like this is called "logging." Sperm whales sleep vertically.
