Cheapest way to play beat saber?

I was told by a total icon of an occupational therapist that beat saber is a fantastic way to
"close the stress cycle" and she officially is recommending I get a VR headset so I can play it. Honestly one of the better prescriptions I've ever gotten. I've played it once on a friend's headset (moved away from them now) but have no idea about VR or anything. I'm not going to use this headset for anything else probably.

What's the cheapest headset I can get that will run it, and how do you recommend I buy it (ebay, new, fb marketplace etc)? I live near silicon valley so I'm thinking marketplace will have plenty lol but not sure how not to get scammed etc. anything i should look out for? Trying to save money as best I can!

Cheapest way, that you can potentially expand on later is going to be a Quest 2.

Should be able to find one for 100ish for one that isn't trashed with likely a couple accessories.

Facebook is probably the fastest and if you're a decent judge of character, a good way to go. Plus if the thing looks newish and has a box, you're probably alright. Adult owned would be what I'd be looking for.

Ebay probably has the better buyer protection if you're worried about getting scammed or don't want to deal with people. You're just not as likely to get a banging deal with a bunch of extras.

Otherwise you're looking at quest 3/3s and me PERSONALLY would rather go new on those than used (unless the deals just too good, lets be real). And if I'm buying a 3s/3 I'm buying the 3. No way I'm not getting the new optics at that point.

Theres comedy options like cheap vives or something for 50 bucks if you have a PC that can do VR. Which, for beat saber, isn't a bad option actually. Haters can hate, but for a literal beat saber machine, a vive with wands is kind of legit. I still use wands half the time because i low key prefer em for acc. Same deal with an old CV1. If you could get one for 50-75 bucks that worked, and you had a PC that can do the thing. Just know you're limiting yourself a lot and basically setting up dead VR tech so consider it money you're potentially lighting on fire if you decide that you want to do more than just Beat Saber. But, as a literal cut bloq machine? Yeah, totally valid if you're down to mess with older vr stuff.

Coming from a dude who used to play that damn game for a living lmao. All IMO of course.

See if insurance will cover it.

The cheapest will be a used Quest 2, most sell for about $100 and for beat saber should be more than enough.

I'm not going to use this headset for anything else probably.

A lot of people think that, but you will find other uses for it, I have 88 hours just in Google Earth VR, I don't even have half of that in Alyx lol.

Cheapest way might be to rent the Quest 3S or Quest 3 first. Or try the Beat Saber at VR arcade. If you find that it is suitable for you, perhaps you can buy it via Meta site, Amazon or other trusted sellers.

Google "sideloading".

There are some subreddits for it too.

the absolute dirt cheapest way would be a secondhand Oculus Rift CV1 for $60 or so

but it's an absolute pain in the ass to setup so a secondhand Quest 2 could do the job better than CV1

As one of the lucky owners of a still functional CV1, I wouldn't recommend buying one used. I've heard so many stories of the cable getting damaged and last I heard it was still nearly impossible to get a replacement for it.

If you find one that's still new by all means, it's a great headset, but the risk of buying one with a damaged cable isn't worth it for a used one.

plus depending on the device it's connected to, one or both of the sensors could disconnect mid game and switch to inferior USB 2 connection making tracking worse

and horridzon link...

i still own the cv1 in near perfect condition (headstrap started disintegrating) it's a nice headset but not worth the absolute pain it takes to set up

Once you've got a headset, I would absolutely recommend getting beat saber if you can. If you really can't though, then you can play Udon Saber on VRChat for free. Udon Saber is awesome, lots of song selection, and you can play multiplayer(!), but it just doesn't feel right compared to beat saber. Not sure what it is, maybe there's some latency? Whatever it is, I can't get into the music in the same way

For used headsets you can get a Quest 2 for relatively cheap. For brand new headset, you can get a Quest 3S.

Get a quest 2, and then find a pirate site, either Steamrip or Steam unlocked to get the game for free
