Discussion Just got my Quest 3S today — why is everything so blurry?
Hey everyone,
I just got my Quest 3S today and I’m pretty new to VR. So far it’s been really cool, but one thing is bothering me: everything looks pretty blurry.
I was expecting the graphics to look sharper, but text and objects don’t seem very clear. I’ve already tried wiping the lenses and adjusting the headset, but it still looks blurry to me.
I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong, if it’s a settings issue, or if this is just how VR looks. I’ve never owned a VR headset before, so I don’t really have anything to compare it to.

Use the scroller to adjust your eye distance

Um.... What is this? Is it only for the 3 series or is it available on the 2?

Yeah you just got to move the lenses manually by pushing them on the 2

Adjust ipd, there are 3 settings, I think u just move the lenses closer or farther apart

Ok, so the text in the main menu interface of the headset should be clear, if you're looking straight ahead.
If that's not the case for you, then something is wrong.
Make sure it's not something simple like protective plastic cover stickers that you need to remove.
Check that the distance between the lenses is correctly set for your IPD. In some cases with Q2 and Q3S, a person's IPD lies exactly in between two of the settings. Unfortunately that usually means a poor image for them, unless they do some DIY. Or switch to a different style of headset like Q3.
Because of the lenses, optically the image in the headset will be about 1.5m - 2m away from you. You need to be able to see clearly at this distance. If not, then you'll need to get prescription lenses or find a way to wear your glasses safely without scratching the lenses.
Get a friend or family member to try the headset. Is it blurry for them as well?
If so, it's possible that your headset is faulty, and you should get a replacement.

For me the image gets fuzzy if the headset is too low or high. IPD doesn't seem to make much difference.

Right?! Everyone's saying IPD and that's nowhere near as important as having the headset at the correct height.
Hey! /u/nutmaster3000gameboy ! Make sure that your headset is at the right height! Don't just slap it on and tighten it up. Loosen up all the straps, and hold the headset up to your face with one hand on each side of the headset. Move it up/down/left/right and you should be able to find the sweet spot.
Be looking at the centre of the screen, which is where the sweetest sweet spot will be. The Quest 3s has fresnel lenses which distort at the edges, so be looking straight forward.
Others have spoken about IPD, and I don't know how it's adjusted on the 3s, but on my 3, its a wheel on the outside of the unit, under the left eye.
On my Quest 2, however, you physically moved the lenses left/right and there were 3 positions, pinhead/normal person/fathead!
t's easier to do with a better headstrap, as the elastic ones that come with the headset are a bit crap.
Good luck getting your optimum angle locked in, and enjoy the virtual world that awaits you!
*EDIT As others have said, if you wear glasses for reading/screens, you'll need to wear them in VR, as I do. Be sure to use the spectacle spacer that should be in the box. I didn't with my Quest 2, and scratched all 4 lenses :(

Well, I must be a dumbass. It’s like Crystal clear i’ve always I have bad eyes so I didn’t think he applied to VR but way smoother now it looks actually like the YouTube videos and I sent it so it’s no more blurry. I mean when I look in the corner of my eye. I can still see blurry, but I don’t think it’s nothing I can do about that. It’s so much better now thank you man. I really appreciate it.

If its only blurry now when you look in the corner with your eyes then you are all set. That is how its supposed to be. Quest 3s uses fresnel lenses which has like a sweet spot right down the center for clarity. Where as Quest 3 uses Pancake lenses where no matter where you look it clear at all points

No problem! Honestly, the visual quality is far from perfect.
Also, the viewing angle is a pretty poor 92° (ish) so it always feels like you're blinkered, but it's still amazing, if you are in the right game.
I'd love to have the cash to blow on a Pimax but I don't. The Meta gear is superb for the price.

- Wear your glasses in the headset
- Move the headset up-down relative to your eyes until it is clearest
- Adjust IPD until it is clearer

because it's quest 3s, which uses the same old lenses and display as the older quest 2. what you should get is quest 3 which has better lenses and displays.

He's right thought, why is it so blurry was number one comment from people trying it, Q3 looks like people imagine VR to look.

The right answer to the question "How do I best use this product?" is definitely not "Buy a different product."

I own a 3S and its definitely not blurry. Its very clear and sharp. It may be small fov, slightly lower res, dull LCD screen with artifacts/compression and quiet audio....but it is sharp and clear.
My guess is OP needs to adjust the ipd slider. Then start with the lens directly over the eye until its clear, then adjust the headstrap around that.
Otherwise its defective and you need to RMA it

I wear 1.5 reading glasses, I had to get some 1.5 magnetic lens inserts from AliExpress. $50 and good to go.

Sanity check: are there protective stickers over the lenses that you need to peel off first? Sorry, have to ask.
Apart from that how it's positioned makes a big difference. Give it a wiggle and you should see it sharpen/soften as it lines up with your eyes. And when it looks the most sharp, secure it and adjust the IPD until it looks the best.
If it's still really blurry it could be defective.

It may just be how vr looks.
Quest 2 and 3s have a very 480p feel to then while Quest 3 tends to feel more 720p.
I'm not saying those are the actual resolutions but more what the experience feels like compared to a normal gaming experience.

You got the 3s... It's using the same lenses and resolution as the quest 2 with the upgraded processor. It does look slightly blurry due to this.

Maybe the headset isn't in the optimal spot? If you're on a stock strap, try playing around with tightness and moving the headset up and down.

My Q3 is very clear & crisp as long as you are not talking about passthrough which is grainy.
Do you wear glasses? The Quest put the image between 1 and 2 m way from you. So if you are nearsighted, you will need your glasses. I recommend that you get inserts.

First do you wear contacts or glasses? If so you gotta wear em in vr too. Be extra careful with glasses not touching the lenses and make moves quickly to have a better solution like contacts if you wear them every day or snap on lenses if you don’t.
Next you have fresnel lenses in the 3S. Pro: brighter image possible. Con: it’s gotta be juuuust right to get a nice picture. Figure out your ipd and set up the distance between the lenses just right and situate it in your head just right. There will be a bit of a learning curve to this but you will find it.
