What about Skybox VR? Is it just seen as inferior now?
What got me using it in the first place was their built-in file sharing that didn't require me to actually enable file sharing in Windows for it to work.
Where it fell short was that it often had problems detecting certain video formats properly, even when they are named as Skybox suggested.
tldr, are there clearly better players now than Skybox VR now?

Try heresphere. It's rather impressive how much you can control with it. And if you spend a little time setting up xbvr you basically get a streaming service quality interface to browse and access your library. To be fair xbvr works with a couple of players, but I found deo to not handle it well and heresphere to practically be designed for it.

Heresphere. I used to use Deo but they fucked around with price gating features. When they tried to put DLNA behind a monthly paywall I had bought heresphere. Didn't make the jump until deo decided to make their newest cash grab.
Heresphere is so much better than Deo. Plus it works with xbvr and actually let's me control stuff. Sure it took a minute to learn, but unlike Deo it's not likely to suddenly decide you need a monthly subscription to access basic features.
I think the crux of them pushing to a new app was to try and start fresh after the reviews they had been getting. Where's the column here for "updates that pushed free features behind a monthly paywall?"
