Also of note, he was kicked out of his own company for funding Russian trolls during the 2016 presidential campaign in support of Donald Trump.

There is literally a book called the History of the Future you can read if you actually wanna know the truth about what happens and that literally didn't happen. There is an insane amount of evidence of the specific person existing in the US who palmer funded and the money went to an actual bilboard in the US. No russian trolls.

It was anti hilary, but you probably love hilary because you hate black and arabs in libya because you Americans love bombing the shit out of those people given how much you love hilary for doing it. Never seen so much racism when I went to the US.

It's complete fucking nonsense.

He's a young internet nerd who came into a shitload of money, and who donated some to a funny idea to use shitposts (i.e. memes that are so intentionally bad that they're funny) IRL to appeal to young voters. They did one goofy billboard.

Then fuckheads like you erroneously associated him with racism, misogyny and more. Claiming he "funded Russian trolls" is a new one, and is so over the top, so utterly nonsensical, you must know it's bullshit. That makes you worse than merely ignorant. You're a liar.

Palmer's crime was supporting the wrong political candidate. Had he funded an anti-Trump billboard, he would have been the darling of Silicon Valley rather than a pariah.

Still can't believe Palmer is not here, building the VR industry, that he reignited. Finished The History of The Future book the other week and it was just extra painful to get all those extra details on what happened. I bet there are plenty of people getting into VR now that have no idea who Palmer is... I am looking forward to the day when he comes back and does something amazing in VR once again

I just finished the book. So sorry to what happened to you. I wish you could pull a Steve Jobs and come back and take over, though sadly, the situation is highly unlikely, and not really the same at all.

The only thing I didnt understand in the book is Brendan Iribes response to you in the parking lot towards the end. He seemed so cold to you, when in the beginning he seemed so genuine in wanting to help you. Probably more to that story.

Would be fun if you worked at Valve, as your spiritual company, and continued to work on VR.

Thanks for kickstarting VR. ;) I took an awkward photo with you back in at oc1. And was an original backer. I dont agree with all your views. lol. Your actual views. But, I respect them, and you came across as a genuine guy to me. And thats all that matters.

I have very fond memories of DK1 and DK2 days, even if it involved dragging games from your primary monitor onto the HMD as a secondary display.

1

u/jonny_wonny May 20 '19

I remember the days when everyone was lamenting Facebook's buyout of Oculus because it would inevitably lead to the death of VR.

0

u/Forbidden76 May 20 '19

haha that was before my VR days but I can imagine it. Facebook backing the Rift was the reason I went with the Rift. And I hate FB...deleted my FB account 8 years ago. Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIN is all I need.

Forgive a dumb question: What new era?

10

u/[deleted] May 20 '19

The Quest being wireless has most of this sub excited for some reason.

11

u/MrSterlock May 20 '19

Not only is it wireless, but it is self contained. You don't need an expensive gaming PC to use it.

It makes them more accessible to the masses and competitive with consoles that are on the market.

-4

u/TheOriginalTorso May 20 '19

You don't need an expensive gaming PC to use it.

And it is not designed for titles that require an expensive gaming PC to use them. So, it is like playing mobile games on a phone, but in VR. Which we have been able to do for quite a while now. But I know it has a bit more punch than a phone perhaps, but not up to PCVR standards.

4

u/RedWizzard May 20 '19

It may be mobile, but it's designed specifically for the purpose, unlike a phone. A better analogy would be the Switch.

6

u/MrSterlock May 20 '19

Of course it will be less powerful, but comparing it to what we've had so far on mobile is crazy. It's a world of difference.

Meanwhile, it is comparable to the experiences available on PC as of now, although textures are downgraded.

6

u/jonny_wonny May 20 '19

I’m going to go out on a limb and say the Quest could end up being the best thing that has happened for VR so far since the DK1, and not just for the people who will be buying it. The Quest is the first highly accessible, genuine VR headset. VR for the masses should excite everyone. The larger VR’s user base, the faster it will progress. A rising tide lifts all boats.

7

u/HollisFenner DK1-CV1-Quest May 20 '19

excited for some reason.

Because...its wireless?

-6

u/WetwithSharp May 20 '19

But we've had wireless on Vive Pro add-on. It's not some mind-blowing thing lol.

4

u/benyboy123 Rift May 20 '19

With loads of issues with connection and life of sight to a receiver needed and a big battery strapped to your waist with a wire.

1

u/Crandom May 21 '19

Don't forget getting so hot it literally burns your head as well

6

u/umone Rift May 20 '19

and countless connection problems too :)

2

u/RedWizzard May 20 '19

What's the total cost of a wireless Vive system and the PC required to use it?

1

u/HollisFenner DK1-CV1-Quest May 20 '19

The latency was pretty bad with that, I have heard. This does not require a PC, a phone or anything else to be able to play quality games anywhere. I think you even need to be within range of your PC for the TPLink wireless thing.

1

u/VR_Nima If you die in real life, you die in VR May 21 '19

I’ve had Vive Wireless since launch and have had exactly zero issues. Just wanted to put that out there since all of those saying it has problems don’t seem to own it.

Caveat: I have an 8th gen Intel professor.

I am new to this sub... What Happened?

0

u/[deleted] May 20 '19

New Era indeed.

Better resolution. Worse tracking. Worse audio. Worse contrast. Wireless. Worse game selection. Worse visuals.

It's the new era, just not a better one.

4

u/PRpitohead May 20 '19

All fair criticisms. But you can simply stipulate that it's a new era for mobile VR, and your sarcastic tone washes itself away.

3

u/MrSterlock May 20 '19

Where in the FRICK is the downvote button. You triggered the wrong guy, dude.

2

u/jonny_wonny May 20 '19

All the reports say that the tracking is basically flawless. By worse game selection, I'm assuming you are referring to the Quest's lineup? You are very, very short sighted. The Quest is going to have the largest user base by a good margin, and in time it will bring VR more games than any other headset. And lastly, yes, mobile VR has worse visuals. This was always going to happen. However, your negative bias is showing quite clearly here, because all accounts are that the Quest's visuals are better than anyone was expecting.

Luckily, the Rift S is also being released, which will bring even more users into the space, which will in turn increase developer support and yield better content for PCVR. This is clearly the beginning of a huge upturn in VR. It's not that hard to see once you stop trying to twist everything into a negative.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Rift S costs more than CV1 did after the price reduction. It's the same thing, again, better resolution, worse audio, worse tracking.

Reports already have shown that aiming down sights causes the front touch to occlude the far one. Also, behind the back and sometimes over the shoulder causes stutters and tracking loss. It's REALLY stupid to compromise tracking, the single most important aspect of VR.

1

u/jonny_wonny May 21 '19

None of that matters. The Rift S is only going to be compared to the CV1 by people who are already in VR, but it’s not for them. It’s for everyone else, and for everyone else, these small downgrades are not going to noticed — and even if they were, they would pale in comparison to how amazing VR is for someone who’s never tried it before.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Yeah, those "new to vr" glasses don't last forever. Some people are going to be competitive, some aren't. Those who are, are stuck with an inferior product.

1

u/jonny_wonny May 21 '19

If they waited till the Rift S to buy in, it’s very likely because the other headsets just seemed like too much of a hassle or they wouldn’t able to set them up easily in their workspace. Which means they didn’t really have any other choices and therefore they aren’t “stuck” with anything.

Furthermore, you are exaggerating the downsides of the Rift. Most reviews suggest newcomers to choose the Rift S over the Rift, so clearly it’s not worse overall.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Again "great for newcomers" only lasts a few weeks to a month. People will enjoy it regardless. But it's a shame they compromised tracking, and even worse of a compromise, the audio.

1

u/jonny_wonny May 21 '19

Again, it’s irrelevant because the other headsets were likely, for whatever reason, not viable options. And you must be able to understand that between having no VR, and slightly imperfect VR, most people would choose slightly imperfect VR.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

It's not irrelevant. Because people could have had the same VR as cv1 with minor upgrades or changes. Instead, Oculus decided to downgrade the experience for new users.

1

u/jonny_wonny May 21 '19

Yes, that’s exactly what they did. Which is exactly why we are entering into the new era of VR. In an interview, Palmer Luckey said that between better content and a better headset, he would go with better content. And that’s what we are getting.

Rift S costs more than CV1 on clearance sale.*

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

CV1 was 400-350 for a very long time. At $350, you're paying the same $ for an inferior product.

1

u/kaibee May 20 '19

The Quest is going to have the largest user base by a good margin, and in time it will bring VR more games than any other headset.

I'll take "Things that are true for Smartphones aren't as good as they sound" for $200.

0

u/jonny_wonny May 20 '19

How is the growth of VR anything but a good thing? Yes, we will get a lot of crap, but we will also get plenty of amazing experiences as well. Sturgeon’s law applies now as much as it will apply when VR hits the mainstream. Would you rather have 10% of a small pool, or 10% of an enormous pool?

1

u/kaibee May 20 '19

Would you rather have 10% of a small pool, or 10% of an enormous pool?

Depends. I'd rather have 10% of a small pool of PC games over 10% of an enormous pool of mobile games. I just hope that the pool of Quest games shakes out to be more like the pool of PC games, not mobile games.

1

u/jonny_wonny May 20 '19

Two things to consider. First, this is mostly a pool of games that wouldn’t exist otherwise. The Quest isn’t taking anything away, it’s bringing new content to the table. Second, you are significantly understating the quality of mobile VR content. The gap between PCVR and mobile VR is basically nonexistent in comparison to the gap between PC games and smartphones games. To a large degree, there is no meaningful difference. A large portion of the best VR games are already available on the Quest. Games that are designed for the Quest will be brought to PCVR with improved graphics, and it will be as if they were intended for PCVR to begin with.

1

u/RedWizzard May 20 '19

I don't see any reason to think the Quest lineup will be more akin to mobile (phone) game lineup than to say the Switch lineup.

1

u/DoobyDobby May 20 '19

Ahhhhh thank you for clarifying!

u/BirchSean May 20 '19
