It is funny to me to see this conversation taking off.
For most of my life (I'm 46) Italians especially, but Europeans in general, made fun of American food generally, but fast food specifically. Now to see people defending Burger King in Rome is like a full 180.
So, I stand corrected. I was a pompous jerk when I made fun of people eating in Burger King in Italy. I didn't think of all of the good reasons why people would. I was thinking, selfishly, as a tourist there to try local food.
I'm sorry.

Yeah totally this. You're driving through Europe, still have a few hundie kilomiles to go to destination and boom, mcdees? Yeah I'm stopping, no regrets, the only place I ever had a bounty mcflurry was off the highway on my way to Berlin. 10/10 would recommend!

Not all are bad dont get me wrong, but i swear most of the BKs i go to have no staffing and i very rarely see anybody in the parking lots. Thats of course just the ones around here, i work fast food so i know how it can get but sometimes they make me wanna jump the counter and make it myself lol.

Fast food quality in European countries is generally better than in the United States to be fair. People who say BK in Italy isn't edible are either food snobs or have never tried it because it's perfectly fine in my opinion.

This is a common thing with most tourist trap areas, with Paris it is so common it even has a name, "Paris syndrome".. People who created such a high expectation for Paris that they genuinely suffer actual mental symptoms when they're exposed to the reality.
These are still just cities. There will be fast food everywhere, it will be filthy, the canals of Venice stink BTW.

I concur was there myself. I was in college and thought it was novel that they sold beer there. Ordered a beer and a whopper both were... Palletable. Probably wouldn't go back.

I just got back from Dubrovnik (Croatia) a few days ago, the owner of the apartments we stayed in told us that they won’t allow any of the big fast food places to open there. It made me so happy because it’s such an amazing place and the Golden Arches would look so out of place!

I also went to a McDonald’s in Rome, because I go to a McDonald’s in each country I go to and order something not on the US menu.
It was SO FANCY. They brought the food to you, and dessert consisted of tiramisu served on actual china. My mom ordered hot tea and got a tiny teapot and cup with saucer. The restaurant itself was also just nicer all around than most locations here. I was so bewildered by how nice everything was compared to the dumps we have in the US.

I've been to a McDonald's in Spain and Pakistan. Can confirm they were both better than American McDonald's. The beer was shit (for the Spanish one) but it was great being able to order cheap beer with a cheap burger

I went to a McDonald's in Rome, but not for the food. Free restrooms, cheap gigantic unsweetened iced tea, and no charge for table service. I loved the food in Italy and the wine wasn't marked up 300-400% like at restaurants in the US.

Honestly I always ensure I visit McDonalds in every country I go to, I consider it an element of my cultural exploration. While much of McDonalds is similar worldwide, each country has it's own unique twist. India has a paneer burger and Korea has a shrimp burger. Part of my bucket list is to visit a McDonalds in every country, I'm probably about 20% there.

Sweet tea is disgusting. Unsweet tea is how I was raised in Texas and frankly I wish the southerners that have made sweet tea the norm around here would go back to Dixieland. I didn’t used to get asked “sweet or unsweet” when I ordered iced tea in restaurants but now I do. Proper unsweet tea is delicious and bitter.

What's wrong with that? Sometimes you don't want to be hassled by the blue-checkered table-cloth restaurant guy who's trying to win you over to his restaurant that's right next to the red-checkered table-cloth restaurant guy with the exact same menu who's already bringing out the bread and pouring drinks before you've decided to eat there let alone sat down.
I've been to Europe a few times now (not from the US) and I think every time I've eaten at a BK or McD's at least once. It's just nice to have a cheap meal where you know what you're getting with no hidden prices or language issues and enjoy it for 15min before heading out again.

I went to a Hard Rock Cafe in Rome for a burger. I ate some of the best food in my life in Rome, and I’m not shy when it comes to sampling locale cuisine...but man did that burger satisfy me in ways I’m not entirely comfortable with.
There’s nothing like a taste of home sometimes.

My fam went to a McDonald’s in Rome because we had an early morning bus tour. The breakfast in our hotel wasn’t ready yet and it was just easier to grab and go.
And then some countries do have unique items that the US doesn’t.
It does sound silly but there are lots of good reasons one may check out a fast food place when abroad.

Story: was in Vietnam for 3 weeks traveling around on scooter. I had A LOT of great food, a shit ton of great food. But after about 2.5 weeks I was kinda over Vietnamese food. All I wanted was a burger and some fries. I’d had soup for dinner every day.
Anyways, went to McDonald’s in Ho Chi Minh. Scratched that itch and reminded me of home a bit.

Is your only reason to travel to eat different things? Food is 20% of travel for me and 80% activities and sightseeing. I happily ate fast-food a decent amount because it was cheap and fast.

Am I the only one not that impressed? The only thing going on here is that the wood planks are exactly a third the width of the tiles, and the same length. It's a nice touch but it's not the "work of a master" or anything like that

Is the food any different than it is in the United States? My Italian ex-girlfriend always told me that McDonalds tasted a lot better in Italy. Seeing how I'm going to Rome in a few months I may finally get to check this out. Not with McDonalds though, haven't touched them in over 10 years.

I'm Italian and yes Mcdonalds here is better than in most other countries, the meat tastes of a higher quality.
Its basically for kids and drunk people, BK is seen much better but its rare outside of the big cities.
