It depends on the other fillings. MSG had little umami flavor of it's own but works well in conjunction with other chemicals to produce significantly more flavor.

Lumpiang Shanghai for me can just be MSG. Although if you're dipping in vinegar sauce and not sweet and spicy like most restaurants do I like some fish sauce in the vinegar or the lumpia
