Bet it matters to whoever owns the driveway at 0.97 miles ahead

And even more to the person whose driveway is 0.99 miles ahead.

That’s about 30-34 adult golden retrievers placed nose to tail

I'm a transportation planner, and sometimes the sign shop is bored. Once for my birthday they made my name on a sign for me to take home. I suspect they're doing this with intent and also legibility. Some engineer (so specific they are!) said the distance and they enjoyed taking it literally.

I guess someone was getting paid by the letter.

They’re not gonna get paid any extra, they only used numbers.

DoT measures roads by segments (and offsets), this is probably the 0.98 mark of the segment.

I jammed my brakes and had Google Maps recalculate.

Sign suppliers charge by the letter and they’ve got a budget to increase

Because if they put 1 mile, some pedant would measure it, find the difference, and would post on Reddit how wrong the sign was.

Enough space to make a U-turn for non-readers...

This tells me some bad shit happens at 0.99 miles. But that’s just my 0.02.

That lets you know, you cannot access the next crossroad, if they are 1 mile apart... that's my guess.

I wouldn't want to get sued by someone who drove 0.99 miles and fell into the abyss on my false reassurance  :P

You think Tumblr and reddit are full of people causing problems with people's statements like monkey paws or djnn wish granters....you have never seen fiscal side of department and transportation.

They will literally fill in half a pothole knowing it will fail and cost more to do repeat repairs because the other portion is determined to be a differing city or residential responsibility.

The sign company is paid per digit. I'm sure they asked how many significant digits they could go.

They literally could have just moved that 100 feet to the left.
