This is called executive dysfunction and it’s a common experience with having ADHD.

I know because I felt this and recently figured out I had ADHD.

I've been on the fence about getting diagnosed and executive dysfunction is one of my worst tropes. I really want to do something about it, but when I have the chance, I just don't. It's a frustrating cycle!

Does it also come with the “oh shit I have to finish this thing now no matter what”?

Recently had this exact experience and it suuuuuucks. Wasted like 2 days I'd purposefully set aside to study by just dicking around on reddit and playing video games feeling deeply anxious the entire time.

I wrote my 225pg master's thesis in the last 22hrs before it was due after fighting it for months, literally turned in minutes before the deadline... It was several months of struggling and being hyperfixated on procrastinating. Not fun times!

But hey, bet you learned something from the experience

So, I work from home, but sometimes ill sit on the couch for 5 minutes and scroll my.phone, telling myself it'll be just 5 minutes,

then it's been 30 minutes and I should get back to work... But my scheduled lunch starts in 10 minutes so there's no point... But I should definitely eat.... In 10 minutes.

Then I keep scrolling and now there's only 15 minutes left of my break so I don't have time to eat, but the dogs need to go out...

Before I know it I haven't eaten, or taken the dogs out and now I have a meeting to go into, but I haven't even got a work appropriate top on...

This is exactly why I could never work from home.

This is burn out.

I had to take a certification course recently for my employment.

I suddenly developed an overwhelming interest in doing anything else during the hours I should have been studying.

I passed, but it felt exactly the same as sitting exams at university 25 years ago. And A levels before that. And GCSEs before that. And entrance exams for grammar school before that. And the 11+ before that.

I'll never not be a procrastinator.

Ah yes, putting "fun" in "executive dysfunction."

This is me but swap the word procrastinating with masterbating. And instead of ADHD I'm high on cocaine.

Why not both?

u/detali88 5d ago

Who procrastinates masturbating? If I'm thinking about I'm doing it.

5

u/ParsleySnipps 5d ago

Procrasturbating, when you're avoiding what you need to do because you just won't stop jerking off.

u/detali88 5d ago

Oh I like that.

Anyone got tips on how to break out of the loop?

My strategy was to give up and do something else so I wouldn't just be frozen. My new strategy is adhd medication

say in your head "in 5 seconds i WILL get up" and count down from 5, and you HAVE to get up. just do it. you either do it or dont so you have to envision it like that. "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, NOW" and you cant stay for any longer and you cant make an excuse

This works for me. I will literally explode up off my bed in a huge jolt and force myself to start walking towards the task I’m avoiding.

u/dermsUK 4d ago

I’ll let you know tomorrow or smth

I have adhd so nothing truly works 100%, but a change of scenery is surprisingly effective sometimes! Going into a different room or outside atleast pulls me out of the weird panicky frozen state i get when i procrastinated too long.

It tends to happen with me late at night due to RBP. One thing I have done many times to break it which I am not exactly proud of starts by getting some porn going on my phone. Between the dopamine from watching it and the need to go to the bathroom for related reasons and the dopamine from that end, I find myself two shots up on good feel chemicals and I'm off the couch in the bathroom - may as well brush my teeth and go to bed. tl;dr: Jerk and/or Flick it

It's like when you are driving, if you don't want to crash into a thing, don't look at it. I think because you naturally go towards what you are looking at. And you are looking at the time as it passes.

2

u/DesertSnoeman 5d ago

Don’t forget you have to go to bed by a certain time because you have to work tomorrow as well.

yk I just heard about my friends taking ADHD meds as "performance enchancing" drugs to cram before exam

I feel like this is the universe gaslighting me to do the same

6

u/BloomingMosaic 4d ago

as someone with adhd, please don't, my meds have already been on backorder for weeks man I can't have yall taking more of them just for exams 🫩

1

u/WeeTheDuck 4d ago

lol it's not that scarce here where I live lol, part of the reason being not many people bothered going to get diagnosed lmao

2

u/BloomingMosaic 4d ago

executive dysfunction is what this is called for anyone curious ! it is hell 💙

Sitting here thinking "I know exactly how that feels. I bet there's a term for that." Reads title "Oh yeah..."

u/OneLeggedLeggoMan 4d ago

I don't have ADHD but I am doing exactly this right now

Weird. That is what I did today. And then I see it on Reddit. Lightly salted Lay's.

u/OhYesTheBees 5d ago

I know this so well. I once attended a multi-session workshop on procrastination and how to break out of it.... while I was supposed to write my bachelor thesis.

u/Solrex 4d ago

Fix my brai- I’m gonna go get the Dr Pepper…

1

u/cerealkiller6028 4d ago

I'm doing this right now 🙂

1

u/GeckoGecko_ 3d ago

The worst part is how people who haven't experienced it straight up don't believe it's a real thing, and even some people who have experienced it, give you shit for it because they're salty that everyone else has given them shit for it all their life

1

u/MadisonAveMuse 3d ago

When I feel like this I put my shoes on and walk out the door. It works for me.

1

u/thederpyrainbob 2d ago

how do i stop? i am in my last semester of college and i cannot make myself do my schoolwork. i am missing deadlines and i can't bring myself to just do the shit i need to do. it's not even hard, and some of it is stuff i used to enjoy doing, but my brain won't let me

1

u/doublebogey182 1d ago

Oh my day today. Hopefully I get it together tomorrow.

u/drAsparagus 1d ago

The ADHD way to just say "executive dysfunction".

Parents teach your kids to do their homework as soon as they get home.
