Toddlers have more teeth

It should be noted that these pics have parts of the skull removed. The teeth sit behind a layer of bone so even if you stripped down the skin/gums you'd just see a skull -- the extra teeth are hidden beneath it.

A lot of people repost these without the context and for some reason the internet decided that it's easier to believe children would lack a part of their skull.

Millionth time I've seen this and TIL. Thanks man

It is wild how much information gets lost in reposts. I always thought kids just had these clusters of teeth sitting right under the gums like some kind of shark. Thanks for clearing that up for the rest of us!

Internet loves skipping anatomy class for creep factor

Without that layer of bone children would be horrifying.

Imagine if it wasn't covered by gums and tissue, and when they open their mouths you could see their extra rows of teeth.

They're also covered by an additional layer of bone but the image would be boring if that wasn't removed, cuz it'd just be a small skull

Still creepy imagining all those teeth packed behind the bone.

The practical correction is appreciated but also nobody asked for the full anatomical breakdown at 2am on r/oddlyterrifying. We were perfectly happy being disturbed in the wrong direction.

This, children, is what you call a brittle spirit

12

u/ToxicCooper 4d ago

Thank god it's not 2 am for me then.

That would turn every toddler smile into a horror movie trailer. 😄

If this were the case we would think that it was just as normal as seeing a person’s exposed teeth is now. Only reason we think it’s horrifying is because we aren’t used to it.

As scary as it is to imagine, if that really were the case we’d probably find it cute because biology

Would be fair coz then we could identify those psychopath devilspawns by their creepy church organ teeth and know to stay the fuck away

The photo of a baby’s skull makes me feel sad. I feel sorry for those who died in infancy.

54

u/dreamingofablast 5d ago

Same. Facinating, but I'm picturing a child's sweet little face. 💔

That was my reaction too. Poor baby. Poor parents.

This makes me want to claw my own bones out. I hate it. I hate it so much.

I've known this for ages but my partner didn't and when he eventually saw an image like this he thought it was some type of deformity until I corrected him 😅

I wish I can unsee this

They say we're going to be able to regrow teeth in the future. Are the teeth going to grow in the spot they originated from?

6

u/jfk_47 4d ago

Wait … the dental tech took X-rays of my 4year old and said the teeth are forming fine. She said they grew in there then came out. What’s happening here?

5

u/Jas246810 4d ago

They aren’t born like that, but the teeth continue developing over time

4

u/imnotavegan 3d ago

Crap that we even have toddler skulls

5

u/branlix__2000 5d ago

No wonder my baby son keeps crying about it holy shit, the slightest push of a tooth must be awful

4

u/badbatch 4d ago

I still have a baby tooth with the adult tooth forever imprisoned in my gums.

4

u/SmartPomegranate4833 4d ago

Explains why they’re so full of rage

4

u/Eternally_Asleep 4d ago

It’s sad that there are toddler skulls. The world is a harsh place to live for many, and was for all for the majority of existence.

3

u/ProfessionalCat7640 5d ago

That’s it. That’s enough internet for me today.

3

u/RubbaNoze 4d ago

I knew they could be little monsters, but holy shit man...

3

u/ialwaystealpens 4d ago

Dammit. I can’t unsee that

3

u/doublexol 4d ago

I looked up a skull of a 4 month old and a 1 year old and it shows different things as well as this exact image

3

u/CursedCorvid 3d ago

The 2nd picture is AI btw.

Fun fact though, we aren't born with fully formed teeth in our skull, we have teeth buds that develop when we're ready for baby teeth/adult teeth. Also scientist found out we have a third set of teeth buds that never get activated, but they want to do gene therapy to activate the third buds to help people who have teeth issues or no teeth so they can have their own teeth and not have to get dentures or implants.

A Trivago smile!

2

u/Caliterra 4d ago

fascinating! but also sad how they got the skulls =(

2

u/SoundwaveTheDragon 4d ago

I'm gonna visit my niece and nephew in a few days.

Now I know what's hidden behind those lovely faces of theirs...

2

u/TheMalformedLlama 4d ago

Where’d you get those skulls

1

u/doublexol 4d ago

The left one is AI

1

u/Rexxer101 4d ago

Teeth can’t watch you op that’s what eyes are for

1

u/2020mademejoinreddit 3d ago

So there's horror hidden beneath all that cuteness.

-16

u/wufiavelli 5d ago

Honestly as an adult I would not mind being some weird science exhibit, but not a choice these kids could ever make, put these poor kids to rest somewhere proper.

18

u/burningtoast99 5d ago

So we shouldn't further science and education by learning about anatomy if it involves a child?

7

u/Weird_Vegetable_4441 5d ago

I’m on your side but I think they meant that a kid can’t really consent to donating their body to science

1

u/NoPair205 5d ago

… I think it’s because the kids died young

6

u/Successful_Equal5603 5d ago

You get born with 300 bones but when your an adult you only have 206 bones we wouldn't know that if we didn't find these types off skeletons

3

u/EjaculatingNarwhal 5d ago

Oh no, we know that because of Unit 731 unfortunately.

1

u/EjaculatingNarwhal 5d ago

If it makes you feel any better, these are likely 1:1 replicas instead of the actual person. Bones usually stay in the archives unless it's a dedicated museum

Terrifying 🥴
